6 year old who isn't really into toys!

I have a Dd will be 6 in November. She enjoys Lego friends stuff which she is getting in abundance for her bday but otherwise she's not really a toy kind of girl. She has tons anyway but nothing gets played with so I'm not that keen on adding to the pile of plastic.
I will get her another small Lego set, and her stocking fillers are no issue but I'm really short on other ideas.

What she does like is: writing stories, the idea of space - stars and planets etc, jigsaws (of which we have zillions!)

Sorry meant to Add: any ideas for a 6 yo with this profile that isn't toys. She's also not bothered about unicorns...

A telescope?

flooredbored · 06/10/2018 11:31

Ok, how about a telescope? Or a trip or activity she would like.

llangennith · 06/10/2018 11:32

Playmobil? The sets offer great scope for imaginative play.

GreenthoughtInAGreenShade · 06/10/2018 11:33

I’ve just seen the Curiosity Box subscription mentioned on another thread and having just looked it up, it looks amazing.

Writing - a lockable journal? I remember liking anything with a little key at that age. This site has ideas for writing-interested kids, including writing magazine subscriptions, setting them up a cosy writing desk/corner, or getting one of their stories bound as a gift

Space - glow in the dark ceiling stars? Northern lights duvet cover? Projector?

tomhazard · 06/10/2018 11:36

Thank you, a telescope and a lockable diary are a perfect idea, she would love both . We have glow in the dark stars already!

I like playmobil but we have a lot that isn't played with already. DS quite likes it but she's not bothered.

goose1964 · 06/10/2018 14:20

I loved my microscope about that age, how about some DK books about space

EduCated · 06/10/2018 14:33

Some posh (to a 6 year old) pens for writing.

An old fashioned letter writing set and some stamps

A star projector lamp/torch

thismeansnothing · 06/10/2018 14:36

Trip to national space centre in Leicester and an overnight stay ? It's supposed to be really good to

LeGrandeFluff · 06/10/2018 14:37

Some craft stuff. Making kits, sewing, beads, etc. Novelty pens/paints.
Have a toy clear out. Stick a box or two in the attic and see if she notices anything missing. Sometimes they can have too much.
Some lovely interactive books about space, how things work, etc.

Ta1kinpeace · 06/10/2018 14:38

Does she need lots of stuff?

Or does she need a few really well chosen things that she will play with for years
(Lego is fantastic for that)

And then you settling down on the floor to make lego things with her

Glitterbaby17 · 06/10/2018 14:39

My DSD was very into space and we got her a projector that put the stars and planets on the ceiling she loved it

OnlyGlowingSlightly · 06/10/2018 15:32

Space Torch and Projector Kids all seem to love these (there are different subjcts)

Globe - you get some which light up and show the constellations too.

Family games, e.g. connect 4, guess who, mastermind, dobble, uno etc

Code & Go Robot Mouse Activity Set has been very popular here.

Craft things if she enjoys that.

PunkAssMoFo · 06/10/2018 15:47

Djeco story and stamp set

PunkAssMoFo · 06/10/2018 15:48

Djeco do some lovely sets for creating stories.
Story cubes are also good.

Would she like a puppet set, so that she can put stories into action?

emmeyebea · 06/10/2018 15:58

Tickets for a panto at the theatre.
Umbrella.
Hobbycraft voucher (if there's one near you)
Stickers.
More stickers Grin
A nice scrapbook.
How about one of those colourful plastic chest of drawers storage things for all her paper, pens & craft stuff?

Equimum · 06/10/2018 16:00

A space projector thingy, that projects stars and planets onto the ceiling.

We have one of the globes that shows constellations, and DS (nearly six) loves it.

Playmobil space stuff. (Our local TKMaxx has had some sets, so might be worth a look).

butterybollocks · 06/10/2018 16:06

I have very similar - 6 yo girl who doesn't really play with toys. Playmobil doesn't do it for her.
Best present last year was a kids tablet. She's been making her own videos with it this week so it's not all just staring at a screen! This year we're thinking of a digital camera, maybe wireless headphones and a teepee as a joint present with her baby brother.

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 06/10/2018 21:46

Amazon fire tablet. My dds love theirs. You can also get a Lego movie maker set - I'm thinking of getting one.

Desk and art trolley- I used the ikea trolley and made one.

Does she like particular films? My dd likes the pop vinyl figures. Or if she's into Disney or harry potter there's loads of merchandise in primark. Dd2 loves pusheen too.

Claire's accessories and smiggle tat.

How to draw books. I've got dd1 a comic book one.

curlykaren · 06/10/2018 22:11

Science museum shop.

ThriftyMcThrifty · 06/10/2018 22:43

When I was your daughter age I was gifted a really fancy art kit in a box - wax paints, pastels, pencils etc. I loved it, and kept it in great condition. Maybe something like that? I also loved notebooks and nice pencils/pens.

HollySwift · 06/10/2018 22:46

Space mad 7yo DS got a bed tent (space theme), a ceiling mounted solar system and the DVD collections of wonders of the universe/solar system with Brian Cox for his birthday. He is a very happy bunny!
Also got a subscription to whizz pop bang magazine which is an utterly brilliant STEM mag for kids.

Mum2OneTeen · 07/10/2018 01:10

My DD loved baking at that age, so aprons, cupcake cases, decorating stuff, kids' recipe book. That kind of thing.

She also loved nature things, so magnifying glass, nature books etc.

There are some kids craft books around, so one about nature crafts would be good, with things like nature collages, weaving on sticks, making "god's eye" decorations etc.

My DD also like making jewellery things too, so some nice beads, cheap pliers, and some jewellery findings would be good too.

Another thing DD liked were these 'stained glass' sun catcher kits. They were quite cheap and consisted on an empty metal frame which are filled with coloured "glass" pieces which are then baked in the oven to melt and fuse onto the frame. The finished object can then been hung in the window as a sun catcher and actually looks quite lovely.

Someone once gave DD a kit which consisted of a plaster "rock" and a little hammer which you use to chip away at the "rock" to reveal the hidden things inside. The one she got was filled with a variety of polished stones and crystals (quartz, amethyst etc) which she could identify using the accompanying booklet. It was an amazing kit, she loved it and it was so exciting slowly seeing a stone appear. I've seen other similar kits containing different things, but the stone one was great as the stones were real, not some plastic replica.

Six is such a lovely age, I'm bound to remember more as the day goes on. Now all I need to do is think of ideas for my soon-to-be 18 year old DD, that is really a challenge!
