How old is too old for playmobil?

I know it is quite individual really but they often say aged 4-10 on the box.
Ds will be 9 and a half at Christmas and he’s hankering after the playmobil police station. He specially likes the idea of the jail Hmm
He has castles, cowboys, Egyptians, Romans, pirates and some of the sports sets and the sports sets and the castles with the knights still see lots of play, every single day. The others not so much.
I’m not sure really if he’s ‘too old’ to be buying new sets now or if I should just get it and I can always sell it on eBay if he outgrows it in a few months and he can have the money from it.
It’s really the only toy he has now that he plays with apart from board games. He doesn’t like lego and never has.

Too old or ok?

If he still wants it and still plays with simailr then he isn’t too old!

bonbonours · 22/09/2018 17:51

Totally depends on the child. My 12 year old loves the stuff but she has always loved little figures and dolls. I'm sure she wouldn't tell her friends about it though.

Harebellmeadow · 22/09/2018 17:51

Still ok, especially if he's hankering over it. If you can afford to, let him have it before he really does grow out of it.

BellaVida · 22/09/2018 17:52

If they want it and play with it, that's all that matters. My 12 year old DS still plays with playmobil. 9 is still really young.

ItsLikeNew · 22/09/2018 17:54

if likes playmobil and wants to play with it, then he's not too old for it.

Verbena87 · 22/09/2018 17:54

Definitely ok. My sister and I are both functional adults with professional jobs. When we’re staying at hers and the kids are in bed we quite often piss about setting up silly scenarios with the Playmobil figures when we should be tidying them away - I’m 31 and she’s 29 BlushGrin

Trialsmum · 22/09/2018 17:54

Ds will also be 9 1/2 at Xmas and he’s too old for Playmobil but if your ds plays with it then he obviously still likes it!

Finlaggan · 22/09/2018 17:56

DD is 9 and still playa with Playmobil as do most of her friends. She's also been looking at some new kits I'm just not sure I can take anymore!

WannaBeAWarhol · 22/09/2018 17:56

DS1 is nearly 9 and his playmobil is still the thing he plays with most. We'll probably get him some more for Christmas.

pinkhorse · 22/09/2018 17:58

My ds has called playmobil babyish for a couple of years but buy it if your child still likes it. There's no set rule.

upsideup · 22/09/2018 17:58

Theres no such thing as being 'too old', I'm pretty sure DH enjoys playmobil more than 5 year old ds does and encourages him to ask for certain sets.

pinkhorse · 22/09/2018 17:58

Sorry forgot to say ds is 8

3luckystars · 22/09/2018 17:59

My dad is 83 and he would still have a go playing with it.

3luckystars · 22/09/2018 17:59

Sorry I posted too soon, So over 85 I’d say.

Hoardernomore · 22/09/2018 18:06

I mean it’ll probably the last year of toy buying I guess - the only other things he likes are electronics and football so I suppose it isn’t a bad thing that he still wants some toys.
I still played with toys aged 9 and feel 9 is very young to stop playing altogether but the window for toys seems so narrow now. They don’t really play properly with much until about 2 and then they’ve outgrown it all by 8! That’s how it seems to be with a lot of my friend’s children anyway.

My nearly 13 dd loves that her 7 year old sister still asks for playmobil so she can play with it too and often picks up a blind bag and buys it out of her own money on the same day she is buying eyeshadow that never gets a look in. Would she admit this to her friends? Doubt it but hey if they want to play with it still why stop them? Honestly its hard thinking of what to buy when they no longer want toys so I'd buy it if I were you.

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 22/09/2018 18:52

Go for it. Playmobil is a classic that will never date. You can keep it for the grandkids😉

Lovemusic33 · 22/09/2018 19:28

I bought dd (11) the playmobil campervan/motorhome last year and it has been played with quite a bit. I don’t think 9 is too old, I think up to 12 years (depending on the child) is fine.

MrsMoastyToasty · 22/09/2018 19:30

Did you not see the Playmobil royal wedding thread on here earlier this year?

ChanklyBore · 22/09/2018 19:37

I bought playmobil for a 11 year old last year.

I just asked that same child - now 12 years old - if they are too old for playmobil.

They said you can never be too old.

I’m of the same mind, there will never be a toy free Christmas here, it sounds joyless!

EdWinchester · 22/09/2018 19:41

We only passed on the ridiculous amount of Playmobil we had when ds was 11.

I still miss the people.

Equimum · 22/09/2018 20:10

If he still wants and likes it, but it.

When I was about to turn ten, my dad refused to let me have any Sylvanians for Christmas, because he thought I was too old, and should be getting rid of the ones I had. It really upset me and made me very insecure at the time. Looking back, I was still very much a little girl, and by the time I had settled at secondary school, I had naturally lost interest anyway, so he needn’t have worried.

LLAP · 22/09/2018 20:32

Certain toys (Lego, Marvel, etc) turn into hobbies that continue in to adulthood. Playtime doesn't need to be serious or controlled by conforming to age ranges. If he enjoys it then he is not to old for it.

LadyKyliePonsonbyFarquhar · 23/09/2018 13:00

I sold a big bag of Playmobil for peanuts at a car boot sale and regretted it ever since and my kids have never forgiven me
