I have £50 to spend on, quite possibly, the most materialistic woman alive

My mum.

Under 60yo.

Has no hobbies (other than shopping).

Buys herself whatever she wants whenever she pleases. So never has a wishlist.

Only likes designer labels which are way out of my price range.

Things we've previously tried which have failed:

  • sentimental gifts like a photo book or professional prints of DC ("I can't hang it up, it doesn't really fit with my decor")
  • gift vouchers ("It's quite impersonal. It's just like handing me money. What's the point?")
  • taking her out for a meal or an afternoon tea (where she will only sip on a cup of tea as she is permanently on a diet)
  • theatre tickets (she has already bought herself tickets for the same show with better seats, or has another show booked for that day)

I have no idea what to get her. Every year it stresses me out. She'll receive the gift with a smile then will give it over to my sister a few weeks later.

She spends £££ on me and DC each year and I always feel silly buying her something so small in comparison.

Whenever I ask her what she'd like, she just says "Surprise me!"

I need to get her something she doesn't know she will like (as she will have already bought herself it)

I need to get her something not clothes, jewellery, accessories, homeware, makeup/perfume-related as she only likes designer stuff

She's not one for homemade gifts or sentimental things like photo cushions or photo books.

She doesn't eat or drink much at all so no fancy foods or hampers.

Total nightmare!

My siblings are a bit better off than me and can afford to buy her the makeup she likes etc. My mum never places any pressure on us to do so but I hate seeing her change in expression after seeing her opening my sister's expensive purse or perfume set next to my Primark onesie i bought for her!

I need to go for something wacky and wonderful.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

Love the cashmere gloves - great ethics, thanks Proseccopoppy

Harris gin oils fab too!

ChishandFips33 · 16/09/2018 11:09

Looks not oils!

WhitefriarsDillyDuck · 16/09/2018 11:12

The Harris gin is amazing, I have at least 20 different gins and we keep drinking the harris and having to order more whilst the rest languishes undrunk. The bottle is so beautiful that I cant throw it into the recycling so they are lined up on the kitchen window- making us look like students.

TheGateauIsInTheChateau · 16/09/2018 11:18

Voucher to get a manicure or pedicure? Not sure where you are but something like the champneys city spas are lovely and affordable

buckeejit · 16/09/2018 11:44

Ooh interested in the gin! I bought loads of stuff in the JM game & you'll be able to pick up a candle a bit cheaper on eBay.

The winter candle by white company is good, (the oil is better value-recently up to £8 for a little bottle but great on my bowl of pine cones)

Molton brown candles are rubbish imo, neom are lovely.

There's an offer for Gardens illustrated for £38 atm with free Orla Keily tins worth £40. I've bought it 'for dh'! Grin

MarshaBradyo · 16/09/2018 11:50

If you do get her a candle get a Diptyque candle from Liberty - so it’s in their nice packaging. About £50

Or flowers from McQueen flowers

Or Tom Ford mascara etc

Ilovewheelychairs · 16/09/2018 11:58

Definitely a lovely candle, or those cashmere gloves look fab! I've got so many brilliant Christmas ideas now for all my family; thanks so much for posting this thread!

bumblingbovine49 · 16/09/2018 12:10

I don't think she sounds wonderful at all!

Have you ever been honest with her about how this present giving makes you feel? I assume not as I imagine it might be a difficult conversation. Refusing to give you ideas us the ultimate in self absorption. She presumably knows you don't have as much money as your sister?

Anyway since you do sound lovely and want to please her I second the suggestion of asking your sister for ideas with the budget you have.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 16/09/2018 12:17

You might think this is a shameless placemark for Christmas present ideas. You would be wrong. Wink

undeecided · 16/09/2018 12:17

Stick her a bet on at Kempton Park for Boxing Day

IWouldLikeToKnow · 16/09/2018 12:20

If she likes expensive makeup I'd go with a Tom Ford lipstick. Definitely luxurious but I'd get a gift receipt in case the shade is wrong!

Annandale · 16/09/2018 12:23

4 hyacinth bulbs you have planted yourself in a simple bowl. They are beautiful and require thought, effirt and planning to get them to bloom at Christmas. Very successful with my dm and mil.

Otherwise, flowers, but not Bloom & wild. I asked on a style thread about florists for a present for my sister and was recommended Moyses Stevens. Fabulous.

timshortfforthalia · 16/09/2018 12:27

sorry if its already been mentioned, flower subscription from bloom and wild

Ameliarose16 · 16/09/2018 12:37

Got some great ideas from here!! I adore the white company and there candles are beautiful- my fave is the Seychelles one

flapjackfairy · 16/09/2018 12:43

Dont bother. You will never please her so buy a goat for a family in a poor country . Or anything else charity based that benefits someone else.

ArtemisWeatherwax · 16/09/2018 12:58

For all you Harris gin lovers I would also suggest Brecon gin from Penderyn
www.penderynstore.com - I've not tried the botanicals but the ordinary one is lush.

And you could top up with a Bee bomb (www.beebombs.com)

buckeejit · 16/09/2018 13:08

Also recommend the amazon dot as the voice recognition is great-one of those & a smart plug in budget on a deal day.

It will save her minor hassle daily-I have one in the living room & 2 lamps plugged into one smart ply so at dusk we just say 'Alexa, lamp on' & there is light! It's great

shakeatailfeather · 16/09/2018 13:48

If she likes candles, try Owen Drew candles. They're lovely

CarrotVan · 16/09/2018 16:04

TK Maxx have Roberto Cavalli scarves reduced from £200 to £14.99

They have Induran earrings reduced from £75 to £12.99

Loads of nice candles and interesting skincare. They usually have lovely cashmere socks, and some great wool throws. And at the moment Mahabis slippers for £29.99 (retail is £80 I think)

If she cooks there’s almost always Le Creuset cookware in store

Nacreous · 16/09/2018 19:00

I agree with Mesmer about something like Fragonard.

I love their “Emilie” or also Marche aux Fleurs

flumpybear · 16/09/2018 19:14

Not read everything but how about a designer Male up bag? ted baker isn't too expensive?
A scarf is always nice too,
Or some boutique gloves?
An Amazon Alexa / echo is a good idea as it's great for music, radio, diaries, general information - I love mine!

Aridane · 16/09/2018 19:28

What actually are the male up brands she likes as opposed to what we thinks she might like??? You say they are too expensive for you - but we might be able to help you identify something for £50

ballseditupforever · 16/09/2018 19:30

Espa home diffuser reeds. Someone bought them for me as a present. Seriously the best thing ever and not as obvious as a JM candle.

lrh3891 · 16/09/2018 20:58

What an amazing thread! I don't have anything to add I'm afraid, but Christmas will be here before we know it and well, I'm placemarking. 😊
