Christmassy food in slow cooker

Sorry if it's been done to death but I've just got a slow cooker and I'm wondering if it's possible to do the ham and spiced apple juice recipe in one.

Does anyone have any other dishes you can do in a slow cooker for Christmas? It's probably not big enough for a turkey though Grin

Yes, definitely ham. I actually do turkey in mine, we hacked it into a sous vide machine and sous vided a rolled crown. It was delicious. Potato gratin would probably work.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/09/2018 16:02

Definitely possible to do Xmas ham in the slow cooker, I don't do it in the oven anymore.

If you're eating the ham cold, leave it to cool in the slow cooker and it stays amazingly moist.

I do braised red cabbage in mine on NYD when I have family over. It frees up the oven for other stuff. I just wang it in and leave it to do it's thing.

FinallyHere · 14/09/2018 16:14

Hot, mulled wine. Cinnamon, cloves, orange rind gives the ultimate christmassy smell and tastes good.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/09/2018 16:22

Thanks for suggestions. Red cabbage is also something I've wanted to try.

Thinking about it if we have my DHs dreaded small Christmas we usually go for a smaller more interesting bird so that might fit.

I always do my Christmas Pudding in it, it doesn't need topping up with water every hour like it does if you have it in the steamer. Absolutely lifesaving. SIL always does her soup course in it. I really think multiple slow cookers are the way to go for Christmas!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 14/09/2018 19:17

@CountFosco do you put water in it? How much? And then do you add the pudding in its bowl, how long do you cook it for please?! X

EgremontRusset · 14/09/2018 19:19

Pears poached in red wine are perfect. I use Elizabeth David’s recipe.

CountFosco · 14/09/2018 19:34

@HollyBollyBooBoo I put the pudding in its bowl in the slow cooker, then put water in the crock up to about half way up the pudding bowl so it's like a bain marie. I then cook it on high for 6h to cook it and then at least 2h on high on Christmas Day itself but it does no harm to simmer there for longer while we're enjoying our meal.

I always found it a pain to make because my recipe needed an overnight soak followed by a 6h steam that required constant attention whereas now I can bung it in the slow cooker and forget about it.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/09/2018 19:55

I've never tried pudding but you all make it sound easy

Brilliant, thank you!

Slow cooker fudge?

Not actual cooking, but a lifesaver on Christmas Day, I cook my turkey on Christmas Eve, cool it and carve it and make the gravy etc. On Christmas morning I pop the meat in some stock in the slow cooker. It's then hot, ready and moist whenever I need it and the oven is free for the roasties etc. I only need to heat how much I'll actually need too. We do a 2nd dinner on boxing Day. I do the same with the turkey but also add in the extra stuffing etc that I made on Christmas day so very little to actually do on the day.

SnuggyBuggy · 14/09/2018 23:53

I've made that sort of fudge before on the hob but this sounds a lot easier. It's hard to get the timing right on the hob.

I always steam my Christmas pudding in the slow cooker. 6hrs overnight for initial cook. House always smells amazing in the morning!

whatareyoueatingNOW · 15/09/2018 10:38

I always have both my slow chicken Omer's going on the day- one with the pudding, the other with mulled wine - actually, the little one does mulled wine pretty much constantly through December Blushit makes the house smell divine.

I also make Christmas fudge, and ham in them

whatareyoueatingNOW · 15/09/2018 10:39

Chicken Omar's? Both of my Slow cookers going - god knows what autocorrect did there

Stack an oxtail, a carrot and 1/2 an onion in a 1L slow cooker. Fill with water, lid on, switch on low and leave overnight. This makes the basis for the richest king of beef gravies. (Save some of the tender beef for a soup)

Take off all the packaging on your gammon. Place in a large slow cooker. Splash 2 tablespoons of water on it. Lid on. Switch to low. Leave overnight. Drain off the brine. Really lovely hot or cold.

Pre-heat your Morphy Richards Sear and Stew,(metal pot) high 20mins. Mix your pork mince, crumbs and thyme. fashion ping-pong sized balls. Place them like the numbers on a clock, around the edges of the cooker. Lid on, high, drain after 45 mins, cook another 30 mins to crisp up a bit. As a tip, push your slow cooker against your kitchen wall tiles. They reflect some heat back.
Same method for pigs in blankets. Some bacons are more watery than others so drain well. Turn over after draining to brown both sides.
Have a trial run, say for a Sunday dinner?
I love my slow cookers. I have a triple, also a huge family 3 1/2L, a large family 3L and a 1L for lunch soups.

PeggyIsInTheNarrative · 15/09/2018 14:54

Whatare please share your Christmas fudge recipe.

Thanks [santa]

SnuggyBuggy · 15/09/2018 15:15

Perhaps not the same fudge recipe but I did one once which involved melting white chocolate in a saucepan and adding a ton of condensed milk then pouring into a tin to set. I imagine a slow cooker would be more gentle.

OP posts:
SnuggyBuggy · 15/09/2018 15:18

I meant tin, would need a pretty big saucepan for a ton

whatareyoueatingNOW · 15/09/2018 19:08

I stole this years ago from mumsnet -

200g Milk choc
200g White Choc
(or 400g any choc basically)
1 tin condensed milk
Vanilla essence
Knob of butter

Shove all in SC on high and leave lid off
Stir every 10mins for about an hour or so.
Pour into a tray and cool (add dried fruit, choc chips etc at this point)
Once cool pop in fridge overnight.

Beautiful choc fudge. I do it all the time. White choc and cranberry is a fave.
