What are the best biscuits to go with cheese?

We're hosting Christmas for the first time and I want to do a brilliant cheeseboard for the end of the meal. But if we are having really nice cheeses I feel like we ought to have really good biscuits to go with them. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Also any recommendations for other things to serve with it - I'm going to have grapes and chutney and I've found little miniatures of quince gin Smile Gin

Water biscuits or good quality baguette

I like apple as well as grape and lots of chutneys. Maybe walnuts and fresh figs.

Loopytiles · 11/09/2018 20:17

Mmmm.

Needs a VERY long break between the main meal and cheese/biscuits.

TFSRM · 11/09/2018 20:19

Don't worry @Loopytiles, we have a non-conventional Christmas lunch. Turkey is banned for a start. People will definitely be leaving space for cheese Smile

Apples is definitely a good call @Pengionsnpandas, thanks

Tart and sweet apples
Branston pickle
Gherkins
Silverskin onions
Olives

What are those long round ended hand madey looking biscuits, I think they are Italian and always come in a clear tray in a clear bag, because they don’t lie flat stacked against each other?

They look as if they are baked from a very fine milled flour, very smooth.

These fancy naice biccies are yum apricot toasts

ourkidmolly · 11/09/2018 21:46

Yes to the above. Amazing. There are three flavours. I love them both. Delicious with soft and crumbly cheese.

Emma765 · 11/09/2018 21:49

It's got to be Hovis.

Tiggles · 11/09/2018 23:00

I love the hovis digestive type ones with cheddar, carrs water ones with soft crumbly cheeses.
And the other day in our farm shop I picked up some vegetable crackers on a whim and they were gorgeous!

HollyBollyBooBoo · 12/09/2018 05:00

Rosemary crackers from Sainsbury's and sesame crackers from Morrison's.

I made a lovely peach and lime chutney last year and that was fabulous with cheese.

Bath olivers are lovely.

BasiliskStare · 12/09/2018 05:36

I am with pps - Carrs water biscuits , larger diameter are indisputably Grin the best choice. & Port . & apple. And my paternal grandfather always liked to have a bit of cheese with his Christmas cake.

QuoadUltra · 12/09/2018 06:45

Pickled walnut
Membrillo
Crackers from the Fine Cheese Company. They do different ones here but my favourite are the ones with celery seed.

diodon · 12/09/2018 06:49

Miller's Toast cranberry and raisin are lovely with good texture. And christmassy. Otherwise as PP said if you're having good cheese you don't want your crackers competing so water crackers/cream crackers etc.

Carr's water biscuits here too, I prefer the small ones though as the big ones can break awkwardly. Also Hovis crackers for a strong cheddar. Peters Yard Sourdough crackers are amazing too.

Although I like flavoured crackers on their own or with butter, I prefer plain with cheese.

I also agree about avoiding Cornish Wafers because of the odd, soft texture.

EmmaJR1 · 12/09/2018 09:07

Caramel biscuits, blue cheese and honey is an amazing combination!

DarlingNikita · 12/09/2018 12:27

My ideal cheeseboard would be a hard cheese, soft, ewe, goat, blue and smoked. That sounds perfect to me. Something for everyone.

I like oatcakes with most cheeses, especially most ewe and goat ones. I'd also like some kind of sweet preserves with them. I recommend the fruit cheeses from here fruitmagpie.co.uk

moredoll · 12/09/2018 13:05

Agree there's got to be some oatcakes.

Alanamackree · 12/09/2018 13:24

Today I’m subsisting on Carr’s water biscuits, goats cheese and quince jelly. How did I live without quince jelly?

My votes are:
Water biscuits (smaller ones)
Christmas cake

But if your guests won’t be full from a big roast, hunks of fresh baguette with a lovely ripe Camembert and a tiny drizzle of honey.

Or what’s the name of that gooey cheese that just melts at room temperature?

I love a bit of asparagus too.

MotherWol · 12/09/2018 14:26

I love Finncrisp sourdough rye crackers, particularly with soft goat's cheeses. Waitrose also sell really nice melba toasts, and I like their poppyseed crackers for cheddar-type cheeses.

Don't forget you'll want some nice chutney as well. Damn, now I want cheese!

MotherWol · 12/09/2018 14:27

@KnotsInMay could you be thinking of Linguette?

Oly5 · 12/09/2018 16:20

These are delicious and will be especially good at xmas

Carr's water biscuit - super size are essential.
Hovis Digestives for the strong cheddar

Sparklyfee · 12/09/2018 16:27

Another vote for hovis and the aldi ones.

Also some olives jalapeños and some Christmas cake Smile
