Best UK Christmas markets?

Roll up, roll up and tell me the best Christmas market you have been to in the UK. I'm booking a mini break as a treat for myself and DP and fancy being soppy at a Christmas market. I've been to the one in Birmingham and I'm looking for something with that sort of style but cutesy (don't flame me you bunch of vipers!)

Looked at Leeds, Lincoln and Manchester. What's your best experience of a Christmas market? [santa][santa][santa]

Apparently Bury is good.

SerenDippyEggs · 11/09/2018 15:23

I'll have a look! Thanks

Edinburgh

ginandnappies · 11/09/2018 15:45

Edinburgh. Beautiful all year round but it's enchanting at Christmas time. We go every year

CakeBiscuit · 11/09/2018 15:53

Cirencester.

We went a few years ago and it was lovely.

SerenDippyEggs · 11/09/2018 17:01

Thanks everyone, I had looked at Edinburgh but it's quite far for me in the Midlands!

Bath Christmas market is quite good, but I don't rate the Bristol one

kshaw · 11/09/2018 17:04

Leeds is rubbish - I live here and it is not good! It's all the same sort of stuff everywhere and is actually really small. The beer tent is fun though!! I really liked Manchester, went to lincoln a few years back and was good but super busy

PickAChew · 11/09/2018 17:07

We have a really good one in Durham, in early December.

Sarcelle · 11/09/2018 17:07

Bath is the best. I go every other year, and I am going this year. Sometimes we stay in Bristol (because Bath hotels get booked up fast) and travel by train to Bath. Takes 15 minutes and they put on special trains. I am staying in Bath this year though.

JessDee · 11/09/2018 17:08

Edinburgh for sure! We go every year as I am in love with Christmas markets also they have so much there at Christmas time it’s magical and quite romantic if thats what you are after!

Bury st Edmunds is large and spread across the town. It gets v busy so make sure you lave time at start and end for park & ride trips.

Tidypidy · 11/09/2018 17:14

Bath is very atmospheric but use public transport to get there as it gets extremely busy.

If you fancy something a bit more rural, the Christmas market at Chatsworth House in the Peak District is really lovely. Gorgeous setting and tons of stalls. Nearby Bakewell is always worth a visit too.

SerenDippyEggs · 11/09/2018 21:10

Ooooh Bath or Edinburgh seems to be the best bet!

@fieldofwheat I live in Derbyshire so I'll be doing all of that anyway! I love the Chatsworth oneGrin

Bristol is a bit naff, most of the stalls are German type food from discount supermarkets being sold on at insanely inflated prices.
Bath is nice but oh my god it gets busy. I went once and decided never again despite licing nearby, being packed into crowds isn't my idea of fun.

SerenDippyEggs · 12/09/2018 13:35

Hmmm I'm hoping mid November will be not tooo busy but obviously Sod's Law dictates it will be!
Edinburgh or Bath are the deciding two at the minute as Leeds has been pushed out of the ring

Bath is gorgeous but getting around it is a total nightmare...you can hardly see the stalls let alone get near them to buy anything. Definitely try to visit earlier in the day to avoid feeling like a sheep in a pen!

Thankewe · 12/09/2018 13:39

Edinburgh by a mile!

Sarcelle · 12/09/2018 15:41

Yes, the Bath one is very popular. We tend to go to the market early doors and then move away from the market and wander around Bath - Circus & Royal Crescent. We will br having a big brekkie and no lunch (might fit in a cake!) but if you do go to Bath and want lunch, the tip is to reserve somewhere. We struggled to get lunch one year - everywhere full or reserved.

MumUndone · 12/09/2018 15:44

Bath, and then you can go to the spa afterwards (though it gets busy so worth pre-booking a treatment if you can, so you don't have to queue).

BellBookandCandle · 12/09/2018 17:40

Lincoln is lovely.......but very very very busy - it can be difficult getting to some stalls, but it is in a beautiful setting. Makes me feel all Christmassy and happy 🎅🏼🎄🎅🏼

MrsPworkingmummy · 12/09/2018 21:53

Edinburgh or Newcastle x

MrsMoastyToasty · 12/09/2018 23:12

Catch the train to Bath Spa station and you're only about a 15 minute walk up through the shops to the market stalls.

cushioncovers · 12/09/2018 23:21

I'm going to go against the grain and say bath is a bit meh. It's nothing special. But obviously if you want to look around the city of bath itself then it's worth going. But the market is full of overpriced stuff that you could get and any farm shop or craft fair.
