Best UK Christmas markets?

Roll up, roll up and tell me the best Christmas market you have been to in the UK. I'm booking a mini break as a treat for myself and DP and fancy being soppy at a Christmas market. I've been to the one in Birmingham and I'm looking for something with that sort of style but cutesy (don't flame me you bunch of vipers!)

Looked at Leeds, Lincoln and Manchester. What's your best experience of a Christmas market? [santa][santa][santa]

OP I know you said UK and you're in Derbyshire BUT for anyone reading this living in the SE I cannot recommend the Arras (France) Christmas market highly enough. An hour's drive from Calais. Just gorgeous...

We go to the bath Christmas market each year (for my birthday!) but usually on a week day. Normally the first day or two that it opens and it's never that busy. We went on the first weekend last year and while it was busy, it wasn't horrendous and I'm not one for crowds at all. The market followed by the spa is wonderful!

Freddiesgirl · 13/09/2018 06:55

OP make sure you check the dates they are opening, a few years ago I went to Bath mid November (if I recall correctly!) and it wasn't open yet- it may have changed but didn't want a wasted trip!

BikeRunSki · 13/09/2018 06:58

Leeds is not worth the trip, and I work in Leeds!!

Chatsworth. It's gorgeous. Much smaller than Manchester but lovely and very christmassy

I am not really an Xmas market person but I thought Lincoln was superb. Really big and pretty. We went st night. Leeds is ok but quite small

Catquest1 · 13/09/2018 07:04

Lincoln is lovely but most local people go on the Thursday night to avoid the really big crowds

Derbyshire to edinburgh by train isn’t THAT far!

If money allows would skip the markets and have a night in London and see the lights, posh department store food hall, and have drinks and food somewhere atmospheric - festive!

Bath on a week day is lovely

Friend of mine went to Cheltenham last year and said it was rubbish

Doidontimmm · 13/09/2018 07:06

Check the dates for Edinburgh too as think it may only open in December (could be wrong). I live here and am not a fan, it’s far far too busy and the same stalls in triplicate, same ones every year. Generic ornaments on a lot. I liked Newcastle. It was small but more interesting stalls, stuff you would actually buy people!

Just thought... Hopetoun House near Edinburgh have one in Nov every year. Now that’s gorgeous!!

PetuliaBlavatsky · 13/09/2018 07:10

Bath opens the last week in November

Gloucester docks Victorian Christmas market is lovely if they still have it. Lots of stalls, activities for kids, by the docks, I've been a few times. I found with Bath market, do town first and do the market when it goes dark. It's quieter and the Abbey is lit up, it's lovely. The Abbey did have chrismas carols on when I've been in the past , so v atmospheric.

SerenDippyEggs · 13/09/2018 16:59

Oooh thanks everyone so far, I'm really struggling! I can be flexible on dates @Gooseysgirl oi! Less of that trying to rinse my bank account Wink it looks incredible!
