Boxing Day Traditions

I've been reading the Christmas and Christmas Eve tradition threads with glee! Just wondering if anyone has any particular traditions for Boxing Day?

We start the day with bubble and squeak for breakfast but that's really the only thing that's set in stone!

Eat leftovers and play with our new presents. At lunchtime, DP & DD settle in on the lounge to watch the start of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race which is the start of a summer of sport watching in this house.

All very low key and relaxed, this year my mother will be here for the first time ever (!) so I will no doubt be listening to her Grin

duckling84 · 08/09/2018 12:04

Ds was born on boxing day so more presents and celebrating

lostlalaloopsy · 08/09/2018 12:07

On Boxing Day the local pub does a Christmas party for kids, it's been running for years and years. We go down to that and I usually have a few ciders to be sociable 😉😉 there's lots of children there so the dc have a blast running around with everyone. Then it's Home for leftovers and cheesy movies.

spudlet7 · 08/09/2018 14:59

Low-key sounds good! Grin

It's always been a chilled day for me. Since DH and I have been together, there is usually a football match for which he has a season ticket so I have a pj day, eat lots of chocolate and watch films or do some online sale shopping.

This year the match is away so I think we will either go for a drive down to the coast and a walk along the beach or meet up with my cousins and go for a few drinks and a pub meal

Up at 8am, in town with niece for shops opening. Buy lots of sales for following years birthdays, few treats for myself. Meet dad for coffee and home to nap

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/09/2018 20:37

We don;t have leftovers ( we're vegetarian apart from DS so no turkey)

Boxing Day is get up late and put some pizza dough on to knead and prove slowly.
Lounge about in PJs after a bath.

Watch all the catch up TV.
Do the pizza toppings and everyone sorts their own to go in the oven. Delish.

We spend Xmas day at home.

Boxing Day we go to my mums for what my sister calls 'Christmas 2'. My mum does a little gift bag for me, DH, dsis and DD gets her Xmas presents then too. Then we go for a walk/let DD run off some steam in the park. Then have a picky tea and play whichever board game DD got for Xmas

We always go to the zoo on Boxing Day. Started doing it about 30 years ago with an ex boyfriend and now do it every year. It's SO quiet. We take a leftovers picnic and wrap up and just have a nice leisurely stroll round then come home for hot chocolate and tv - it feels good to be out the house after overindulging the day before and it means we all sleep really well

spudlet7 · 09/09/2018 10:55

It's interesting to hear how many different things people get up to on Boxing Day! Love the zoo idea Smile

It’s Christmas 2!

We spend Christmas Day at my mums, go back Boxing Day morning (she’s local)... the kids toys are still there from the day before, lots of family come over. We play games, watch movies, eat ham and pickles and mash... fit in Boxing Day racing!

DontCallMeCharlotte · 09/09/2018 15:36

Our family used to play cricket in the street and neighbours would join in.

Now I have the DH going to football thing as a PP above so I just chill.

MichonnesBBF · 09/09/2018 15:49

Lazy quiet morning

Meet family in restaurant at lunch time

Then all head off to the theatre for the Pantomime..

Chrisinthemorning · 09/09/2018 16:35

Just us, at home. Eat what you want, when you want, do what you want, wear what you want.
This means DS stays in PJs, eats pizza, plays with his new toys and has lots of screen time.
DH and I stay in PJs/ trackies, tidy up and find homes for stuff, I have a long bath, eat mainly cheese and have lots of screen time.
It’s bliss Grin

ThisIsNotARealAvo · 09/09/2018 16:39

Sometimes we have PIL staying so we have breakfast with them then they go home and we watch telly.

DH's friend's birthday is on 26th so sometimes he takes the DC to his party and I stay at home and watch telly. It's a pj day for me definitely.

Katjolo · 09/09/2018 16:57

Massive family get together in the evening. Normally all members of my dads side of the family get together for games, nibbles, drinks and music. Each year we rotate whose house to invade lol

SimplyPut · 09/09/2018 19:15

Long lie followed by relaxing baths with new products and into fresh pj's. Grilled cheese and leftovers for lunch then sweets and a movie early evening.

It's a rare day of no where to be and no need to eat square meals. Bliss.

MsAwesomeDragon · 09/09/2018 19:18

We go to mils house for boxing Day. We have a buffet dinner bigger than our Christmas dinner but apparently it's mostly "leftovers*

We don't invite anyone or go anywhere on Christmas Day, so our family traditions are on Christmas Eve and boxing Day.

elQuintoConyo · 09/09/2018 19:23

Walk the dog!

Play with new toys, read new books, watch Christmas films.

DH may take DS to see Abuelo and some other family, in which case i stay home and cuddle up with the dog and a film or 6 of my choosing.

NoWordForFluffy · 09/09/2018 21:03

We have our Christmas roast on Boxing Day as we eat buffet food for lunch and dinner on Christmas Day itself so that the DC don't have to abandon their toys at any point to go and eat.

We start the day lazily, with more playing all morning, then decamp to PiLs' for me to cook for us all. Or they come here. We'll see how we feel nearer the time!

tillytoodles1 · 09/09/2018 21:07

As I come from a big family, we all do our own thing on Christmas Day. We meet up on Boxing Night for a Chinese banquet at a local restaurant.

MaNeOi · 09/09/2018 21:10

We have Christmas chocolate/cakes for breakfast and let the kids play with everything from the day before. My DH, DF and the rest of the 'men' usually go to the football and then we host a big party afterwards with all the extended family we tend not to see for the rest of the year.

With a big buffet and really another day of Christmas and being crazy for the kids, and drinking for the adults.

Safe to say the 27th is usually spent watching films and snoozing.

ipswichwitch · 09/09/2018 21:15

I usually pop out early for the next sale - sad I know but I get a lot of clothes for the DC, and one in particular is super skinny and it’s one of the few places I can get trousers that fit. I get a large gingerbread latte for the drive home. Then the IL’s come over for the all day buffet we put on- just keep topping up the table with stuff fresh out the oven. Once they’ve gone, we go for an evening walk with the DC, home for hot chocolate, bath, pj’s and a movie.

spudlet7 · 10/09/2018 11:27

Love these, keep em coming!

Leftovers & laziness. We normally host so have plenty of people around. If MIL is here she brings her bread maker and makes lovely fresh bread rolls to go with left overs for supper buffet. That's the highlight of my Boxing Day, although I'm often a bit stuck to know what to do for lunch on as we save the leftovers for that. We try to get out for a walk, often fail. Its hard though as grandparents are getting much less mobile and a hike around the woods is not really on for them and I feel bad leaving them.

As the kids are getting older though and no-one's obsessed by their toys, I think we need to be stricter about getting everyone out as last year there was a bit of boredom kicking in. Mini winter picnics are nice, hot chocolate, mince pies, stollen or whatever to keep the festive feeling going....if we get out!

Its definitely still a proper holiday day for us though. Christmas Eve is more of a normal day with everything building up in the afternoon.
