Christmas dining set yay or nay?

Just that really!

Thoughts?

I'm toying with the idea, any nice ones spotted? Would probably want silver as opposed to Santa etc. Just arguing with myself as it feels wasteful, but....

what a waste of money! i would spend that money on a day out, a new outfit or extra presents.

toolazytothinkofausername · 16/08/2018 18:06

Christmas serving dishes/platters sound awesome!

toolazytothinkofausername · 16/08/2018 18:06

I wouldn't get Christmas plates as the food will cover it anyway.

GerardWay · 16/08/2018 18:06

I have a Portmerion set someone bought for us years ago. Not Christmassy but it's now a tradition to use it.
It's really lovely to just have Christmas items that have been bought over the years.

GerardWay · 16/08/2018 18:09

I also have an expensive cutlery set (again a gift) plus lovely wine glasses.
The rest of the year we eat off our every day stuff 😁

Squeeless · 16/08/2018 19:04

I think it's more I'm thinking of purchasing a 'nice' set as opposed to the (fairly nice but boring) white set I use all year round. Hmmm just not sure

Do It! We have a lovely set from home bargains. White with silver snowmen silhouettes round the edges and silver snowflakes.

christmasgeek · 16/08/2018 19:15

We have a beautiful Emma Bridgewater (dinner plates, side plates and serving platter) in the Christmas Rose print - it’s my absolute favourite of all my collection!

However, we dont just use it for Christmas Day - we’ve actually taken to using it all year round as it’s not a typical Christmas print.

AveABanana · 16/08/2018 19:21

We have christmas glasses and mugs which come out on Dec 1.

yikesanotherbooboo · 16/08/2018 19:21

I would love to have a Christmas dining set. I have few bits and bobs. Every year I used to buy a few tree decorations or ornaments. I have plenty now. I love getting them out each year. I have started buying a few serving dishes , jugs etc now, my next ambition is table mats .

AvoidingDM · 16/08/2018 19:24

I wouldn't buy a specific Christmas set but I do have a everyday and a GOOD set that can be used whenever I have visitors.

CanineEnigma · 16/08/2018 19:25

If I had spare cash I would get a classic set that could get rolled out every year. Same with fancy cutlery/wine glasses. But I don't, so we don't. If we had the spare cash it would probably go on clothes. I'd maybe get some Christmassy accessories for the table instead, like gold coloured charger plates or place mats. Napkins, serving dishes, that sort of thing.

ohgodnotyouagain · 16/08/2018 19:27

I really want special Christmas dishes but can never bring myself to buy some!

Also want Christmas salt and pepper pots and Christmas mugs....

Methe · 16/08/2018 19:27

I’ve always wanted one but have never seen one I like that much they’re always a bit too cheesy!

I like the sound of yours flares

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/08/2018 19:30

I’ve collected the Spide Xmas tree over 20 years, started with some serving bowls, nibbles etc and it grows. I always pick up the odd piece in TK maxx or eBay (never full price)
It’s such good quality, better than my everyday stuff. I love getting it out at the beginning of the month and so do my kids even though they would never normally notice that kind of thing. It’s our tradition now.
The only thing I would say is pick a design that’s been around a while, not a one off that you can replace or add to.

StubbleTurnips · 16/08/2018 19:31

We have a full Christmas set that's used for the month of December, love it. Ours was cheap but it's on its eighth year of use. Add to it each year too.

I'm a crockery hoarder though....

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 16/08/2018 19:31

*Spode stupid phone

kenandbarbie · 16/08/2018 19:33

My fil got us a Santa type one from a charity shop. I wouldn't have bothered buying it myself, but I really love it and I'm excited to get it out every year Smile

Disfordarkchocolate · 16/08/2018 19:35

I some bits and pieces I got from Debenhams, wish I had got more when I could. It's lovely unpacking it and starting to feel Christmassy.

christmasgeek · 16/08/2018 20:35

@ohgodnotyouagain me too, desperate for some lovely Christmas salt & pepper pots, we don’t even use pepper 🤣

Musicalstatues · 16/08/2018 20:38

I have a lot of the Spode Christmas tree range. From plates and mats to wine glasses, coffee cups, cake forks, you know, all the essentials Smile I love it and we use it all through December.

Musicalstatues · 16/08/2018 20:39

I picked up most of it in their sale where a lot of things are half price in January, also a few bits from tk maxx and sellers on amazon.

dementedma · 16/08/2018 20:41

Nah, we just use our normal stuff - and that applies to bedding and towels and toilet paper and anything else Christmas themed household objects.

VivaJen · 17/08/2018 09:45

I also have Spode Christmas Tree and we use it for the whole of December. It has built up over the years and everyone loves when we switch over. I do love crockery (used to work for Royal Worcester years ago).

If you go for a nice set you can use it throughout the year I would suggest making sure the range isn’t likely to be discontinued in the near future. This means you can add to it and build it up.

blitzen · 17/08/2018 10:18

I was going to do that this year but instead I am going to get a Christmassy tablecloth and use my dinner service reserved for best!
