Too Expensive for a Christmas present?

DanceTeacherMom · 13/08/2018 17:32

My 8 year old daughter is really into art, and has asked for a large set of markers for Christmas. The makers she has asked for are high end and she will not settle for cheaper ones. They are 300 pounds and I know she will use them a lot but I have 4 main concerns.

  1. I wouldn't know what to get for my 6 year old to make up for that as I don't want to get her gymnastics mat etc as id rather that be a joint present, but with her being 6 she doesn't have any main interests except cheaper toys and dance equiptment (most of which she has as I own a studio).

  2. She is well aware of the price and I'm concerned she will become spoilt if I buy her something that expensive. And I couldn't bring myself to not getting her other presents aswell.

  3. The set she wants has 72 markers and she won't settle for a smaller pack as there is 'not enough colours'.

Should I get them?

Wrt play kitchens I really rate the Ikea one
Never thought of Ikea, I was thinking Argos but I think Ikea would last longer than Argos!

No she is 8- it’s not like she is going to art college and it’s 18!! She may not use them by February

DanceTeacherMom · 14/08/2018 07:41

Wow and I thought sharpies were expensive enough!
I know! I was astonished at the price, but I watched a few videos and they seem very great quality! You can get cases for really cheap also, so she would lose any. She's a bit of a neat freak and likes to count all her toys etc. so I know she would document exactly how many she has, in exactly what shades! Grin

Ive explained in my updates, she is well trusted and responsible, also they are on half price! They were her only wish and she even suggested I don't get her a single other thing!

OP, you really don't need permission from Internet randoms. If you want to treat her then do so. You'll get weird responses on here to this sort of question as you've probably discovered

Id have no qualms about buying these if they were a longed for gift and I was sure they'd be looked after

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/08/2018 07:57

Personally I don't think you always have to measure up presents financially for young children , they have different requirements at different times. On the other hand I'd DD is aware of cost then you are a bit stuck. Agree with everyone that £300 for coloured pens is idiotic .
If you choose to buy them for her I would go with pp's suggestion of her saving too. We have done this in the past when eg DS1 was dead set on a PlayStation, he saved half the cost... it meant more to him when it came actually .

I know! I only expected one or two answers, about the quality of the markers etc. but people are being very helpful and now I have been informed they are half price, I will be buying them for her!

She has a piggy bank, pocket money etc. and I will be asking her to put maybe 50 or 60 pounds in an envelope to 'ship to Santa', as the markers are now half price and more affordable, but I still want her to know she has to work for the markers etc.

I used to collect gel pens when they were first a thing - they were about £2 each back in the 90s. At half price I'd be tempted given what you've said here about her loving colouring. I don't think there's a mad rush to buy though as they seem to always be on "offer" somewhere! (Amazon £158 for 72 atm)

Thanks I didn't know they were on offer a lot! I tend to buy all the presents early anyway so ill get them just so I know I have them sorted!

I like to spend advent relaxing and doing fun things
I wish this was the case, but as a dance teacher, its show week from the 19th-23rd! Lots of preparations, but the kids enjoy being with their friends, and It keeps them busy so christmas comes a bit quicker!

Blimey - a busy time then!
My dc don't break up til 21st this year which is a bit late
I never set foot in a shop in December if I can help it smile

Very busy! Mine break up from school on the 21st also! I always thought they'd break up around the 16th but this year its a lot later! I ten to stay away from shops, unless its to buy batteries!

She is 8 - not a professional. She is only going to scribble with them. What’s wrong with a pack from Tesco’s.

As I have explained in my updates, she is very responsible and get art lessons from her aunt. The work she produced now is to a very high quality and her colouring is very good for an 8 year old but the pens she has keep running out and she wants some like her auntie. She has impressed me all year old with her skills and now that they are half price I will be buying them for her. Id rather her be colouring than watching tv or playing computer games.

Yes - they don't look bulky to store tbh! I'm very jealous Grin

beingthere · 14/08/2018 10:04

Give her the lot as they are cheaper! Christmas to remember!

Think yourself kicker it is something creative she’s wanting and not some overage video game or an unsuitable outfit!

beingthere · 14/08/2018 10:05

Kicker? Lucky!

AlonsoTigerHeart · 14/08/2018 10:10

£60 per Xbox game
£200+ for a console
£100+ for a bike
£60 furby/hatchamal
£100 playmobil/ Lego
£80 trainers/ clothes (per item)

If you can afford it it’s no different from above but they aren’t veiwed as ridiculous .

FurForksSake · 14/08/2018 10:12

Use camelcamelcamel to look at the lowest price they have been and set a price alert, I do this for all the things the kids want from Amazon. It really helps to see how the prices fluctuate!

angelichosts · 14/08/2018 10:21

The Copic Ciao ones are great, my daughter has some. They are cheaper on Cult Pens than on the link posted above, e.g. £136.
www.cultpens.com/i/q/CP10151/copic-ciao-set-of-72

I thought they were expensive so bought my daugher a set of 12 of these and added a large set of cheaper ones from Hobbycraft. She was happy with these.

You can buy them individually on Cult Pens too, if you know what colours your daughter particularly wants.

Makesmilingyourbesthobby · 14/08/2018 10:27

Far to expensive for a gift, they just pens i been doing sketching/painting all my life & would never invest in them for myself let alone a 8 year old they pens, i really don't see any difference with the cheaper ones & I have never heard of 'pens' that cost that much, If she enjoys arts & crafts you could try showing her how much more supplies she can have at that price & how expensive they are and also show her the value of £300 as at that age she may not get the concept of money of that value

DanceTeacherMom · 14/08/2018 12:20

I have addressed this in my updates thank you. I have decided to buy the lot - I’d rather get her what she wants instead of cheaper things that won’t last. My six year old will be getting her play kitchen, half the price of the pens but she doesn’t understand the concept of money, and a play kitchen is all she has asked for. The pens are half price at the moment and that is why I am buying them.
