Too Expensive for a Christmas present?

My 8 year old daughter is really into art, and has asked for a large set of markers for Christmas. The makers she has asked for are high end and she will not settle for cheaper ones. They are 300 pounds and I know she will use them a lot but I have 4 main concerns.

  1. I wouldn't know what to get for my 6 year old to make up for that as I don't want to get her gymnastics mat etc as id rather that be a joint present, but with her being 6 she doesn't have any main interests except cheaper toys and dance equiptment (most of which she has as I own a studio).

  2. She is well aware of the price and I'm concerned she will become spoilt if I buy her something that expensive. And I couldn't bring myself to not getting her other presents aswell.

  3. The set she wants has 72 markers and she won't settle for a smaller pack as there is 'not enough colours'.

Should I get them?

We also buy a different paper for her as the markets tend to come through ordinary paper

Thanks, I didn't know this, ill give my sister some money to buy her some good papers etc. as she knows better than me!

My DD 8 too well 9 on Thursday 😊..she is very artistic...and those pens I just sent you a link , are amazing!...she also too looks after her art stuff and keeps it immaculate!
(Can't say that about her bedroom🙄)
Those co-pic pens are fantastic and my DD would love them..😍..I'm going to get her some...thanks OP 👍

Dd doesn't bounce for the broken bones and I don't want her to compete against gb already cousins. She is awesome at karate but that is a relatively cheap sport a gi lasts pretty much forever!

Her art stuff super expensive and has never been neglected, left in a cupboard or unappreciated.

My six year old would be well up for it but as for my 8 year old, she's scared of almost everything! Rollercoasters, slides, you name it, its a fear of hers!

You are lucky to have your sister who knows about it all. I didn't have a clue. I thought art would be a 'cheap' hobby but apparently not. Her drawings are amazing though and it's lovely to watch her. My son never liked drawing, he just likes gaming🙄 so this has been very different for us to have an 'arty' child.

I know! I don't know what id do without her, she's the one that got her into art in the first place! My little brothers 17 and he loves gaming, I never really understood it though Confused

I have pro markers, budget alternative maybe so she has a range of colours while she collects, saves for, the more expensive. I think it is lovely that she will end up with a hobby rather than lots of small things which are quickly forgotten. I wish mine would come up with such imaginative wish lists

DanceTeacherMom · 13/08/2018 22:37

Thanks for the suggestion! Also I love the creative wish lists, especially my 6 year olds requests for a real life unicorn! :) Hmm

No advice on the markers but if your six year old wants a unicorn have you seen the ponycycle ones . My friends daughter got one from Santa a few years ago and it’s used regularly and always by my son when we visit .

RockinHippy · 13/08/2018 22:54

Honestly, no, don't do it, especially as she's demanding it & not thinking of the cost at all.

Find her a smaller set of the same type of pens in primary colours, black & white perhaps & make up the other colours with cheaper pens.

My daughter was very arty when younger, I did at times but her high end stuff as our circumstances are a bit different in that she has a disability, plus she never insisted on expensive brands, if anything she worried about the cost.

Either way, quality art stuff or not, it all ended up in the same state a few months later.

It's just not worth it & I feel in your case from what you say here, you might be setting a precedent where's she's expecting expensive high end gifts all of the time. Maybe set something up to teach her the value of the £300, how much foods it could buy etc & see how much she still expects you to buy it

Is she asking for the The Winsor & Newton BrushMarker pens?

(If yes, I have much to say about them)

AlphabetSoupcon · 14/08/2018 06:23

I think I know which pens you mean. They are a professional set, I couldn’t afford them until I was in my twenties!

But I use them every day, passed my degree with them and if I had had them when I was eight it would have made my life!

You can buy them in smaller sets. If you can’t afford it, get a few at a time. If she’s serious about art she will love them.

Are these the ones that walk? She has spotted them on Adverts etc. I think ill go with one of those!

Im thinking of buying a few at a time, and if I was to buy them all, Id explain they would be from Santa, aswell as mummy and wouldn't have as many presents as normal, which she is totally fine with.

Went to see what was so special about them and this set is half price! No idea if it's the right ones though!

DanceTeacherMom · 14/08/2018 07:23

The way I worded it made it seem she was bratty, she is far from that. All I meant was it was the only thing on her list, and I didn't want to let her only wish down. She knows the value of money, as she helps with shopping, e.g. weighing veg items, scanning etc. Also, she also she counts her dance fees etc. So her being demanding and not caring about the price wasn't my concern, I just didn't know how the markers would work well with her being 8 years old! I have it sorted now though, a few single pens of her choice in her stocking, and a larger set from amazon or cheaper markers, so she can colour along side her aunt!

Wow I had no idea they were on half price! I think ill buy them while I still can, and keep them away, until closer to Christmas and then decide if I'm going to give her a few, and keep some for birthdays etc. or give her the whole set!

DanceTeacherMom · 14/08/2018 07:28

Thinking about it, shed normally get about 150 pounds worth of toys she doesn't play with. I think she'd benefit from them, and now that they are half price, I'm stuck on what to do! Also, upon waking up my youngest informed me she doesn't want a unicorn anymore, and instead wants a play kitchen, which I think is a good present to balance the markers!

My ds1 (much older than your dd!) Has asked for one thing...a replica sword from game of thrones to hang on his bedroom wall.
Wow very creative! I think I might be getting the price half price! I hate to admit I'm very into bargaining and that is a price to good to turn down! As long as it makes her happy and she is good all year, I don't think Santa will have a problem!
