Present for ds's new girlfriend?

I genuinely have no idea about this. Ds is about to turn 14 and is loved up with his first girlfriend, for about the last two months. In these circumstances would you do a little present from Dh and I to her? Instinctively I would say no - she's not coming over during Christmas Day etc, too new, too much pressure - but I seem to give fewer presents than the MN norm and don't want to be Scrooge.

Yes, do get her a little something. Chocolate orange or little nail varnish set (£5 or so in boots I think) or something like that Xmas Smile

Littlelambpeep · 20/12/2017 21:13

A little token would be very kind. I think I would get a little something for her.

Rainybohoho · 20/12/2017 21:14

I agree, a little token something would be kind.

Lovemusic33 · 20/12/2017 21:15

I don’t think you need to buy her anything, your ds can buy her a small gift?
Dd is 14 and has her first boyfriend, they have been together for 8 months, she bought him a small gift, I don’t think he’s bought her anything. They are still kids and relationships often don’t last long at their age.

annandale · 20/12/2017 21:15

Oh bless you! This was niggling at me, makes sense to put something under the tree for her.

I would get her a little something! Boots & Superdrug both have great gifty bits for teenagers.

troodiedoo · 20/12/2017 21:21

Gosh no I wouldn't get her anything! If you feel inclined though I'd run it past your ds first.

Floralnomad · 20/12/2017 21:23

I wouldn’t get her anything if you are not seeing her on Christmas Day .

secondhoneymoon · 20/12/2017 23:39

I would get a little something in that situation. I agree re checking with DS first and ask him what sort of thing she'd like. Even if he says nothing, I would have something ready in case her parents give him something - chocolate orange as already suggested or similar.

BacktoworkonMonday · 21/12/2017 09:19

I'd get a little something. It's a kind thing to do. Also, whilst rare, some people do end up with their childhood sweethearts later on and a small gesture like this will be remembered.

MirandaWest · 21/12/2017 09:22

I probably wouldn't. Has your DS got her something?

pilates · 21/12/2017 09:29

Two months, no
A year yes

skippy67 · 21/12/2017 09:39

2 months in? No I wouldn't, cos that would be a bit weird...

BadTasteFlump · 21/12/2017 09:47

So she's 13 (ish) and they've only been seeing each other a couple of months? Nope, I wouldn't buy her a gift. It seems a bit icky to me, almost like too much pressure on a relationship that shouldn't be serious at all.

Unless you buy gifts for DS's friends, I wouldn't buy for his girlfriend either.

MirandaWest · 21/12/2017 09:57

Have been thinking more about this - DS is 14 and if he had a girlfriend I think he would find it odd if I got her a present. So that's why I wouldn't.

thegrinchreaper · 21/12/2017 10:07

No, they're just kids. She isn't your DIL or anything.

kaytee87 · 21/12/2017 10:15

It depends really. Is she round your house a lot? Will you see her on Christmas Eve or Boxing Day? Would your ds be happy for you to buy something?

happy2bhomely · 21/12/2017 10:19

No way!

My ds is 17 and has been seeing his first girlfriend for a couple of months. If she was coming here Christmas day I would have a very small something to give just like any other guest.

As it is, they are spending the day together on the 23rd and are exchanging gifts then. I've ordered the presents he chose (and paid for himself) from Amazon and I've offered him the use of my wrapping paper. I've told him he has to wrap it himself though!

I think he would die of cringing if I suggested it. In fact, I've just asked him and he said, 'don't you dare!'

It's nice that you've considered her but it would be far too much too soon. I don't think relationships at 13 need any encouragment.

namechange2222 · 21/12/2017 10:43

No definitely not. It could embarrass the girl, they're 14, they're friends

Leeds2 · 21/12/2017 13:26

I wouldn't, but I don't think it would look "odd" if you did. If you decide to go ahead, I would check with your son first.

annandale · 21/12/2017 13:30

Many thanks! I think I will stick to my first instinct and not get anything, but I might just tuck an emergency chocolate orange in the cupboard in case of sudden need.

BadTasteFlump · 21/12/2017 16:31

Am loving the idea of an emergency chocolate orange Xmas Grin

secondhoneymoon · 26/12/2017 15:11

Intrigued for future reference.... how did this one play out?

annandale · 26/12/2017 16:27

Needn't have worried as they haven't been together at all from the 23rd onwards except for hours chatting on the tablet

If she's still significant in a year's time that's a whole new ball game I think [tries to ignore the possibility]
