Christmas songs you can't bear?

I'm sure it's been done hundreds of times but which festive songs do you hate? I'm listening to a Christmas playlist and had to run from another room to stop "When A Child Is Born" by Johnnie Mathis. It actually makes my skin crawl. And the Jackson's version of Santa Claus is coming to town hurts my ears. So which ones send you running for the off switch?

John Lennon. So this is Christmas/And what have you done?.
AAARGH!!!

BuzzKillington · 11/12/2017 22:53

We have a Christmas playlist but have to skip through most of it!

Hate - Do They Know it's Christmas, Last Christmas, Driving Home for Christmas and about 20 other ones.

theredjellybean ooh I love It Came Upon A Midnight Clear - my favourite lines are in the final verse:

"For lo! The days are hastening on
By prophet-bards foretold
And with the ever-circling years
Comes round the age of gold.
When peace shall over all the earth
Its ancient spend ours fling;
And the whole world give back the song
Which now the angels sing."

Beautiful Star Halo

Wayfarersonbaby · 12/12/2017 01:53

*splendours! Not spend ours! My autocorrect is clearly too much of the modern commercial world and not enough of the timeless angelic realm.

Walking in the air- it goes through me.

Another vote for loving the Phil Spector album Smile

lostlalaloopsy · 12/12/2017 07:57

So This is Christmas and Lonely this Christmas - both are very depressing and have been banned from the house!!

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 12/12/2017 09:45

kylies - santa baby has just been on its so cringy

sueelleker · 12/12/2017 10:38

I loathe The Little Boy that Santa Claus Forgot. Love Winter's Tale by David Essex though (even though it's not strictly Christmas) I saw him in concert in November once, and he said 'in a few weeks time this will be floating across all the supermarket aisles'!

Whishkeeey · 12/12/2017 11:33

I'm with you on 'When A Child Is Born', OP. Pukesome.

The Band Aid one really grinds me gears, too. I don't know many people who like it!

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire....whatever its actually called...cringe.

I absolutely LOVE Fairytale of New York, though Grin

nigelschristmasham · 12/12/2017 13:53

I found out the other day that the Easy 17 one was actually written about one of their brothers who killed himself! Which has changed my enjoyment of it a bit tbh...

Joolsy · 12/12/2017 16:04

I can't stand Santa Baby by Kylie - she is trying and failing to copy Madonna (as she always did about 20 years ago) - Madonna's version is much better.

There aren't many more that I hate but I don't understand John Lennon's Merry Christmas song "Another year over, and a new one just begun" - not if it's Christmas!!

fruityb · 12/12/2017 16:06

Santa Baby by Kylie sounding like she wants to bang him senseless. I am not a fan of breathy Kylie at all

phoenix1973 · 12/12/2017 16:11
  1. But it's very cold out here in the snow. Can we save the cavalry...dum a lum a lum dum dum......wish I could be home for Christmas.
  2. Simply having a wonderful Christmas time.
woodhill · 12/12/2017 16:12

I thought it was

Kill yourself at cavalry

Don't ask me why

HereBeFuckery · 12/12/2017 22:52

@Joolsy noooo! It's the Eartha Kitt version of Santa Baby that's tolerable. She can do breathy.

Unihorn · 12/12/2017 23:01

I bloody hate Step Into Christmas. Those beginning notes grind on me so much. I also dislike David Essex - Winter's Tale.

Also has anyone heard Alexander Armstrong butchering Christmas songs? So painful.

Joolsy · 13/12/2017 09:14

@HereBeFuckery that's true, but Madonna's version isn't "breathy" - it's quite bossy!

redexpat · 13/12/2017 09:21

Away in a manger. I cant bear it.

StarAboveParvati · 13/12/2017 09:25

Simply Having a Wonderful Christmastime by talentless thumbs up noodler, P McCartney

KnitFastDieWarm · 13/12/2017 09:53

I loathe all Christmas songs with a passion, with the exception of shakin' Stevens which I have an inexplicable fondness for.

Give me adam lay ybounden or myn lyking any day (spot the ex-chorister Grin)

KnitFastDieWarm · 13/12/2017 09:55

Agree that It Came Upon the Midnight Clear is wonderful Star

And actually I quite like the power of love because at least it's about love rather than being grabby Hmm

namechangedcantthinkofnewone · 13/12/2017 09:58

Love Christmas but dislike them all.

whatsavings · 13/12/2017 10:16

Love Mathis "When A Child Is Born" detest & loathe Band Aid.

I am currently playing the soundtrack to Home Alone here, just because it makes me smile.

Zaphodsotherhead · 13/12/2017 13:34

Another Sister-In-Retail here. Thank you everyone for feeling our pain.

Kylie makes me want to eat my own ears off.
