This would be perfect for someone I know. Have any of you bought this for someone? Not getting very far with Google, more bamboozled than anything.

They're a bit of a con really because they don't tell you much.

Lancelottie · 27/11/2017 10:46

Only do it if you are very, very confident that it won't reveal more than you intend.

Or at least, never buy it for more than one sibling in a family unless you have extreme confidence that there is nothing untoward in the family woodshed.

Lancelottie · 27/11/2017 10:47

Troll -- that's exactly the line I took with the somewhat distressed and puzzled elderly family friend who couldn't see how on earth her sister had had such a different result from her own.

SingleAF · 27/11/2017 10:47

Oh ok Troll, I didn't know that. A friend got one years ago and found out about all sorts of Asian heritage that he didn't know he had.

I suppose what I'm asking is, is there a legit one?

Thanks all, food for thought.

I got one for myself then one as a present for my DFather.

I have to say, mine was a bit more detailed and interesting than my Dad’s. Mainly because my parents are from two different continents. My Dad’s showed that he was “Western European” and was rather vague.

Ecureuil · 27/11/2017 10:56

What company did you use Dovetailed? My dad would really like one for his birthday.

SingleAF · 27/11/2017 11:12

Yy Dove- or anyone actually, which one did you use?

I've recently received the results of mine back (which I was given for last Christmas but didn't get round to sending off!) and it was so exciting that I've now bought one for dh for this Christmas. I'm going to give it him when it arrives though, as I predict the number of people who receive them for Christmas will cause a backlog in January when they all send them off for testing.

For me, the actual dna breakdown was not all that interesting or surprising, but the great thing was the number of third and fourth cousins it connected me to. One of them has emailed me already, and we're in the process of working out who our shared ancestor is. I am finding it fascinating and it's re-invigorated my efforts to do my family tree.

I used Ancestry DNA - they had a Black Friday reduction but I don't know if it's ended now - I paid £49 plus £20 delivery.

Larrytheleprechaun · 27/11/2017 11:22

Finally something I can answer. Have been doing family history research for a few years now and the test usually recommended on all genealogy Facebook pages is the ancestry.com test. It's on sale for black Friday at the moment. It's the one I have used myself and is absolutely NOT a con. I have been able to connect to cousins (both known and unknown) with it. When you return your sample you get your results and it will show your matches on ancestry.com. You can then upload your results to a free website (gedmatch.com) which will compare again with the thousands of people who use it.

SingleAF · 27/11/2017 11:27

Oh wow, thank you! Am getting excited now :)

Dovetailed · 27/11/2017 11:39

I used Ancestry.com which didn’t reveal much for the European side.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/11/2017 11:41

I'd like it!

Ages ago now, but Dh and I both had our 'ancestral' DNA (direct maternal/paternal lines) done by Oxford Ancestors. I made copies of all the info that was relevant to anyone in the family and sent it all as an extra at Christmas. They all found it v interesting.

Dh and I turned out to have the same direct line paternal ancestor - apparently same applies to some 45% of native Europeans, so he must have been busy! - but different maternal. Mine went back 45000 years and is the same as Cheddar Gorge Man, who lived 9000 years ago.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 27/11/2017 11:44

why these kits are a scam

It's like horoscopes.

Aridane · 27/11/2017 11:45

When I go on to www.ancestry.com, all the pricing for the kits is in USD (USD59). Is there a UK / GBP site?

Aridane · 27/11/2017 11:46

Please ignore my idiot question - there is a tiny dropdown menu at the bottom of the page enabling me to switch from US to UK Blush

Aridane · 27/11/2017 11:56

OK - so Ancestry.com still have the £49 kit (ending midnight tonight) - but shipping is £20! Is that right or am I messing up the order? Thanks!

Bekabeech · 27/11/2017 12:03

The Ancestry one is the best, and it always adds £20 p and p because of the way they deal with it, but your postage to return it to them is included. It works best if you have at least a skeleton family tree, so it can match you with other people and you might be able to see the connection.
The biggest advantage of doing the Ancestry test is that you can download the raw data and up load it to other sites, but you can’t upload data to Ancestry.
The “where do you come from data” is from hundreds of years ago and to be taken with a pinch of salt, but could give clues. UCL has some useful information on their website.

cakedup · 27/11/2017 12:08

My mum, sister and I had ours done with ancestory.com. Really exciting, we all loved it. It's nothing like horoscopes as the poster suggested above!! We sent ours off at different times from different addresses

cakedup · 27/11/2017 12:10

Sorry....and it matched us up as family members. We also found 3rd cousins which proved true with a little digging.

SingleAF · 27/11/2017 12:13

Well I've bought it now :).

I’d like to do this but no desire to hook up with relatives so that puts me off the ancestry.com ......

TinselTwins · 27/11/2017 12:24

A talk show did this on identical twins and they got significantly different results. Also they sell holidays and who knows the consequences of this for our children, especially these days with the trend towards extreme right wing views gaining popularity & momentum!

If you make your DNA information known you are also making your direct relatives information known, this is why I'll only have DNA tests if there is an actual medical need but HEE tests are far more secure data size anyway) there's a fuzzy line there with consent, by having it done you are consenting on your parents and children behalf to have your ancestry data sold. Who knows how that might be used in the future!

My mother is having this done despite knowing that I feel she isn't the one who risks the consequences, that'll be her grandchildren!

TinselTwins · 27/11/2017 12:25

Holiday??? "Data" (how did my device get holiday from data??)

BobbyGentry · 27/11/2017 12:26

23 & me was interesting, percentage of Neanderthal and gave medical propensities
