This would be perfect for someone I know. Have any of you bought this for someone? Not getting very far with Google, more bamboozled than anything.

ive got it for ds1 for xmas. Hes been going on about it for a while.

My stepdad had it done and it was interesting

Bekabeech · 27/11/2017 13:07

If you don’t share your DNA to another site then it is pretty secure on Ancestry and you can ask them to wipe it I believe.
But if you aren’t interested in family history then it seems a lot for not much to me.

Most do sell data to third parties. That is not the same thing as posts/profiles being private or public

rizlett · 27/11/2017 13:15

I had one done a few months ago and here are my results:-

3% Finnish/Northwest Russian
2% East European
4% Italian/Greek
2% Irish
2% Spanish/Portugese
87% British

I do appreciate it's pretty general but I still like it.

Aridane · 27/11/2017 13:31

Thanks for clarifying on postage, Bekabeech

Aridane · 27/11/2017 13:37

Does personally identifiable information automatically get uploaded and become publicly available? I don't mind my anonymised data being shared - but don't want Aridane to be identifiable or get distant relatives making con

TinselTwins · 27/11/2017 13:41

Airdane, no not to the general public, but it does get sold/shared to 3rd parties so there is no guarantees about how it's used in the future.

Unlike medical gene testing where genetic data and ID data are stored completely separately.

Aridane · 27/11/2017 13:44

OK - thanks! I have gone ahead and ordered.

LemonadeWithACherry · 27/11/2017 13:55

My estimate was
81% Great Britain (narrowed down to Wales and West Midlands so quite specific)
11% Scotland
2% Iberian peninsula
2% Western Europe
2% Eastern Europe
And smatterings of European Jewish, Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

LemonadeWithACherry · 27/11/2017 13:57

To clarify when I said 'my estimate', that's what the results are described as by Ancestry.

gabsdot · 27/11/2017 14:15

I got these for my parents last year. They loved them. They are both keen on genealogy and they their test results opened up loads of new research and put them in touch with "cousins" who had done genealogy. They've actually met up with one of the relatives they discovered.

I had my children's DNA tested too they are adopted from Russia and we have very little information about their birth families . The results were fascinating and hopefully in the future it will enable them to get in touch with biological relatives.

FilledSoda · 28/11/2017 14:56

That's interesting gabsdot.
I'm adopted and would love to see her f I could find cousins .

1stTimeMama · 28/11/2017 15:11

But last night I bought my husband the MyHeritage kit. I think he'll find it really interesting, and I read some great reviews, so hopefully it's a hit!

1stTimeMama · 28/11/2017 15:12

but Just!

TheSpottedZebra · 28/11/2017 15:15

People who've used Ancestry dna - do they write to you with your results, and what to do next/how to read them?

My mum has just done hers, and I can see that the info has been loaded into the website, but she's not actually had any communication from them other than 'we're processing your results'.

Maudlinmaud · 28/11/2017 15:20

I'm adopted too, I know I have siblings, so this would be interesting if a little bit daunting at the same time. Weirdly I'm really interested in genealogy and researched my adoptive families family tree. I'm going to look into this as a treat for myself.

rizlett · 28/11/2017 15:33

Zebra - they will send an email to say when your mums results are ready and its really simple to click though and read them.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/11/2017 15:43

This rizlett . Do you know if they say how to best go about decoding the results, whether you push t to upload a family tree etc ?

TheSpottedZebra · 28/11/2017 15:43

whether you ought to...

rizlett · 28/11/2017 15:53

The results will be laid out really simple - they suggest you put in details to create a family tree which is pretty easy to - but they want you to subscribe in order to link with other members. [I haven't done this to date - maybe I will if they have a good offer at some point.]

rizlett · 28/11/2017 15:53

*too!

TheSpottedZebra · 28/11/2017 16:00

Super - thanks!

MonkeyJumping · 28/11/2017 16:06

None of the commercially available tests are reliable yet: there are a set of American identical triplets who took a test and got different ethnicity results.

FilledSoda · 28/11/2017 16:12

Maudinmaud , I am exactly the same.
I'm on wikitree and I'm fascinated with researching my adoptive family tree, much more so than anyone born into the family.
I suppose it wouldn't take a shrink to figure that one out .
I cant find my bf's family and they have no knowledge of my existence, could you imagine if I was matched to some of them ?
I think I'm going to have to do this .

Dustbunny1900 · 28/11/2017 16:16

I'm planning on getting one, I'm American/Canadian so many smatterings of different things, absolutely no knowledge of my fathers heritage.
Some ppl prefer to hire a genealogist or try and track ancestors from birth records but those are obviously extremely euro-centric (and male dominated) and last names were changed to sound more anglicized or Americanized so I don't feel I can even trust the "records" without a professional to guide me.

Of course the DNA test is "fun" and not to be taken super seriously..it can't be used to legally prove anything and it's in its infancy. But it's a starting place!
