Family Board Games suitable for 6yo with a bit of help

What board games would be good for a 6yo? She's quite bright and strategic, and enjoys staying up a bit after her toddler sister has gone to bed to do something a bit grown up with the adults, so I'm thinking of things that are actually fun for adults to play but she could join in with, even if it needed a bit of help, might be better than something directly targeted at her age-group. She's enjoyed Splendor and Dobble and dh and I like Ticket to Ride and Carcossone, which I think have junior versions but maybe adapting the grown up ones would be better? All suggestions welcome as we don't have many.

I was about to suggest Splendor!

Also Dixit - brilliant game for all ages

WhirlwindHugs · 26/11/2017 09:39

Carcassonne is fine for a 6yo to play as is imo. Just keep the pace quick so they don't get bored waiting for people to have their turn.

At six I would have thought you struggle with the more adult games unless you team up with her. For her playing independently look at
Great game of Britain (trains)
Destination animation (pixar) (this a a simple but very special game, you build your own zoetrope www.amazon.co.uk/RTL-Games-103086-Destination-Animation?tag=mumsnetforum-21 )
Cluedo
The underground game (also trains but a fab way of learning the underground map)
Forbidden island (Co op)
Minecraft the card game (fab even if your aren't into mine craft)
Sushi go
There's a bagpuss game that is awesome if you can get hold of it but it's an old game now

Not the junior version of Catan that's properly rubbish. I haven't tried the junior version of ticket to ride or cassone
I was playing chase the lady (card game) at that age although as a grown up i think it's a fairly awful game. Still gets trotted out at parties though

Bagpuss game

My 6 year old loves a game of Uno

NotCitrus · 26/11/2017 09:51

Carcassonne - just use the adult one but don't do farmers.
Rummikub
Cooperative scrabble - aim to get as many points as you can between you

SET is brilliant as often children are better at it.
Scotland Yard if she's with an adult being the detectives

Ticket to Ride with an adult helping and her being in charge of putting trains on the board. Or Settlers of Catan where people seeing your cards is less important.

Thanks - these sound great! Our biggest challenge is going to be finding time to play them without dd2 coming crashing in.

If she is bright & strategic she will probably enjoy Monopoly - my DS loved it at that age, still does 10 years later Grin.

Cagliostro · 26/11/2017 10:01

Indigo, Callisto, Ingenious, Castle Panic, Marrakech

longestlurkerever · 26/11/2017 10:01

Ah she does like monopoly - but it takes forever and dd2 never stays asleep that long.

My 6 year old loves frustration, junior monopoly, junior scrabble, bugs in the kitchen (lots of fun, I love this game) busy town, dobble...

ojell · 26/11/2017 10:05

We took ‘Port Royal’ on holiday this year and I wondered if my 5 year old would be able to play and enjoy it. Second time we played he beat me soundly. Card game rather than board game, but it’s good fun and doesn’t last too long.

‘Sushi Go’ and ‘Rhino Hero’ are also popular in our house.

NameChange30 · 26/11/2017 10:06

Cranium

longestlurkerever · 26/11/2017 10:09

You've reminded me that I already have Dixit - will look that out, and DM might have rummikub at her house. I LOVED Scotland Yard as a child, but never owned it. I might have to get that... Have just ordered the pixar one from ebay and sent a list of some of the others to DM. Thanks everyone.

We played a card version of monopoly on our last holiday with friends - Shuffle Monopoly Deal on Amazon - I was hustled by a friends 6year old mercilessly
Getting them as presents for grown ups and DS1 (just turned 7)

wendz86 · 26/11/2017 10:11

My 6 year old quite likes cluedo .

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 26/11/2017 10:13

My DS (6) loves Minions Monopoly and UNO.

He likes being the quizmaster in The Chase too, but depends how good her reading is.

Zoesweet · 26/11/2017 10:14

Try junior monopoly it's fun to play with. :D

MachiKoro · 26/11/2017 10:17

A 6yo will manage ticket to ride!
King of Tokyo is good
Machi Koro
Pandemic is cooperative, so would probably work
Sheriff of Nottingham

Toffeelatteplease · 26/11/2017 10:21

Yy to frustration. I like that as an adult. BUT doesn't need to be a branded version any Ludo variant works.

Monopoly is an awful game. Won in the first 3 rounds of the board everyone else then spends the next three hours waiting to lose. I used to love it when I was younger, I didn't understand why my friends ended the game seething and resentful when I was younger

Most of the games I suggested last about 45 mins to hour half. Sushi go and Minecraft are usually half hour. Destination Animation can be played younger. We used to do destination Animation first so younger DS felt included then a more complex game after.

Settlers of Catan where people seeing your cards is less important

Depends how competitive you are. Grin

Turquoisetamborine · 26/11/2017 10:23

Cranium is a great family game.

MachiKoro · 26/11/2017 10:29

Yy to cranium!

longestlurkerever · 26/11/2017 10:41

Oh fab, we have Cranium, though it needs restocking with playdoh etc. Will look that out too

Blockus is great. Easy enough for kids and good fun for the adults who play with them.

badbadhusky · 26/11/2017 10:54

We bought this a couple of years ago and it is a great game to play with all the family: Bridget. It’s very simple in concept, but games can be short or long depending on the competitiveness and strategising intent of the players. DS2 has thrashed his Dad (genuinely) a few times. It’s also very portable - we take it on holiday and to restaurants to keep the kids busy if there’s slow service.
