OvO · 31/10/2017 17:20

I'm glad Dobble has been mentioned as I have it put away for Christmas!

Things with the fewest rules are my favourite. Especially as I'm the only one who can read the leaflets apparently.

LikeTheShoes · 31/10/2017 17:35

We play the UK version of ticket to ride without the upgrades, it's much better! (And we're all adults!) I think I still prefer Transamerica to Ticket to Ride though (but if it's not in print it can be £££)

Takenoko (it's about feeding pandas!)

I think the Star Wars Carcassonne is actually really good, faster to play and not too themed.
Kill Dr Lucky is also fabulous, much better than cluedo. (Probably for 11+ though and only really works well with 3 or more people)

We were big Pandemic fans, but have recently got the Thunderbirds game and it's great!

RueDeWakening · 31/10/2017 17:43

Card games:
UNO
Dobble
Any of the Brainbox games
All fairly family friendly for age 7+ (though my 4yo plays Dobble too).

Board games:
Carcassonne
Settlers of Catan

Dice games:
Perudo

OvO · 31/10/2017 22:11

I like the sound of Carcassonne. Just have to figure out how to pronounce it now. Xmas Blush

I see up thread there's a Star Wars one! My peciousssssss....

(I'm the OP of the thread, I've just gone back to my non-Halloween name!)

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/10/2017 22:17

Ultimate one night werewolf

Fantastic game

We played it for over 3 hours on Christmas day...we had to beg the children to stop, and each gane is only about 10 mins long (can be a bit longer depending on the arguments

Its the only game i can safely say we play constantly

OvO · 31/10/2017 22:27

Never heard of that one, Rufus, but just looked it up and I like the sound of it a lot! Think it's just the sort of thing my DSs will like.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/10/2017 22:37

Its awesome ovo

Would i steer you wrong?

(Probably to be fair)

I have just ordered One night alien for our Christmas game this year Grin

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/10/2017 22:38

And we bought the 2nd werewolf game for easter Grin

OvO · 31/10/2017 22:44

It's on my DH's watch list now. Xmas Grin. It sounds fun and very, very importantly it doesn't sound like it'll take 27 reads of the rules before we work out what the hell we're doing!

Anything with werewolves is always going to be a big hit too.

I'll come find you if it turns out to be 'I'm going to murder you all in your sleep' type of family fun...

KingsHeathen · 31/10/2017 22:55

caulk I assumed you were near me... Recommend me a board game cafe please? I went to Thirsty Meeples whilst on a visit, and I loved it!

KingsHeathen · 31/10/2017 22:57

I am completely underwhelmed by dobble. Confused

I love King Of Tokyo though.
And Ticket to ride
And Machi Koro

Caulk · 31/10/2017 22:58

KH I go to some of the Afternoon play in Ladywood or Roll Agin in Quinton - monthly events.
Meeple Mayhem is the most popular now Cakes and Ladders has closed.

KingsHeathen · 31/10/2017 23:00

Ooh- thanks, will have to Google!

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 31/10/2017 23:02

Outburst is a perennial favourite in our house. Also fond of Best of British and the Logo Game for grown up trivia tournaments.

For DD (6) we all love Enchanted Forest. She usually wipes the floor with us and our middle-aged memories.

TheBadgersMadeMeDoIt · 31/10/2017 23:06

And Scattergories! Can’t believe I nearly forgot that one. Best tackled with teams, I find.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/10/2017 23:13

I'll come find you if it turns out to be 'I'm going to murder you all in your sleep' type of family fun...

Wait....what?

That wasnt in your OP!!!

In which case forget I recommended anything...ever

(Best moment was ds1 pointing at all of us in turn yelling, 'you're a werewolf' youre a werewolf, youre a werewolf...im the only human!! And then the look on his face Grin)

Frontstep · 31/10/2017 23:22

Rapido!! Pictionary but with dough, not drawing ....Smile

KingLooieCatz · 01/11/2017 08:40

Another vote for Carcassonne, big family fave. We had a mass family trip to the actual city of Carcassonne in France last year because of this. I have processes in place to prevent DH taking forever to take his turn and DS gets bored waiting. We have speed Carcassonne now.

OP did you find a board game café in Edinburgh? I can think of a couple but I couldn't name them, only describe where they are in relation to bus stops.

There is a great independent games board shop on that slightly dingy street near the Meadows, parallel to Clerk Street. Near Snax café. They would happily make recommendations. Don't think we've ever come out empty-handed. No idea what it's called though.

We also Quirkle, Dobble, Labyrinth, Tsuro regularly with 8yo Ds and he's been playing these for a couple of years. Tsuro is quick and simple.

TheHobbitMum · 01/11/2017 08:54

Our current favourite board games (we adults, 16,15,11,9) a few a small filler or party games

Catan
Pandemic
Lords of Waterdeep
Coup
Sushi Go
Century (Golem Edition)
One night ultimate Werewolf
Citadels
Love Letter
Tsuro of the seas
Munchkin (loads of themes like Nightmare before Christmas, Shakespeare, Dr Who etc)
Fluxx card game also lots of themes Dr Who, Adventure time etc
Dobble
Exploding Kittens
Codenames

If you can get it and like a great boardgame then I highly recommend Gloomhaven :D

autumnintheair · 01/11/2017 09:36

dobble is fun but we cant get much out of it than a quick play now and then - what we all love is exploding kittens, enough to keep us all interested and enough strategy for us all.

Never liked labyrinth, carsconne is OK but another we love is camels up and ticket to ride, ticket to ride is a proper meaty game thats a joy to play.

KingLooieCatz · 01/11/2017 15:33

Wait! There's a Star Wars Carcassonne? Overlooked that on the first read through. Off to check it out.

MachiKoro · 01/11/2017 15:39

The star wars Carcassonne is slightly different play from normal Carcassonne I believe. Just be warned...

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 01/11/2017 15:58

DH doesn't like board games but will play cards.

DS17 likes: Monopoly, The Chase, Cluedo, Uno, chess, straight, Scrabble, Pass the Pigs, Trivial Pursuit and (weirdly) The Cheese Touch (Diary of a Wimpy Kid).

I tried to interest him in Blockbusters but the questions were so out of date he didn't know any of the answers.

NewtsSuitcase · 01/11/2017 16:14

We bought star wars carcassonne last year. It hasn't had as much play as ticket to ride but was still enjoyed.

Blogwoman · 01/11/2017 18:43

We also love Carcassonne. Wondering about Pandemic but not sure a collaborative is going to be popular here! Bananagrams is a recent discovery, but disliked by DD2 who's a poor speller. DH suggests Colditz because he thinks it's still the 1970s Grin. Watching with interest. What age children will you be playing with OP? Would like to find a game we could play with DM who has memory loss...but that might be a tall order.
