Tinsel alternative

I grew up in a tinsel-friendly house. I can't decide if I actually like the bloody stuff or not (will probably always be a bit nostalgic though) but it's probably a bit naff and dated now.

If you don't have tinsel, is there an alternative?

What decorations do you have instead?

Nothing is as good as tinsel. It's Christmas. This is no time for subtlety.

Torn strips of hessian and 'artisan' string. (ie....string)

Paper chains , dcs and I make them together.

We use bead or ribbon garlands. I have an adversion to tinsel the way some people do to cotton wool- it makes my teeth hurt lol!

I spent years avoiding tinsel, using beads etc, and then last year thought "fuck it - I want the spectacular sparkliness of tinsel" and bought some of the really thick stuff. My tree looked awesome! I have embraced my inner tinsel-loving self and sod anyone who doesn't approve - it isn't their tree.

Deep pile tinsel is such a good description. I think I might have to steal that for my festive name change.

We're tinsel fans here. I am considering a pom-pom garland this year though.

Where do you buy the "deep pile" tinsel from? I struggle to find any that fits that description, but that's exactly how I like it.

I make pom pom garlands, paperchains, strings of popcorn/oranges/cinnamon, holly etc, garlands made from foliage and pine cones. DC make paper snowflakes and Chinese lanterns.

I do like a retro decoration. Honeycomb balls for example but not tinsel.

We use long strings of silver beads on the tree instead of tinsel. Looks lovely.

I saw some deep pile in JL a couple of weeks ago. Tesco quite often have some proper chunky stuff too.

I never use tinsel on the trees, i have coloured beads that match my colour scheme, i do like a bit on my desk at work tho

Lovely tree Oliack. We use the bead strings usually but going for nothing but white lights and popcorn strings this year - a friend had it like that last year and it looked beautiful.

The trees have strings of beads instead of tinsel. Mainly because I have about a million tree decorations and tinsel takes up too much space on the tree.

The rest of the house has tinsel all over- round the bannisters, over each picture, round the mantelpiece. You can't beat the sparkle of tinsel.

I'm twitching at the thought of tinsel.
On the tree - lights, beads.
Round the house - greenery.
