Tinsel alternative

I grew up in a tinsel-friendly house. I can't decide if I actually like the bloody stuff or not (will probably always be a bit nostalgic though) but it's probably a bit naff and dated now.

If you don't have tinsel, is there an alternative?

What decorations do you have instead?

Last year someone recommended metal "tinsel" that you hang individually from the tree. I ordered some after Christmas last year so haven't tried it yet but it's supposed to give a good twinkly effect.

I’ve got the opposite issue. I loathe tinsel but my DD’s love it and have been after me to out it on the tree for years...I just can’t do it. Not on the main one anyway...might have to relent and put some on the small tree this year...oh my eyes :(

I use beads and ribbon on my tree and I can assure you there is nothing understated or tasteful about my tree. Grin
Last year I happened to have some thick Christmas ribbon you know the stuff that has a fine wire through it that looked fab on the tree as do my various shiny beads.
The dc like tinsel so they wrap it round their beds and things though it’s harder to get nice thick stuff now than it used to be.

There is no better feeling than burying your face in tinsel and smelling Christmases past. It brings a tear to my eye.

NoWordForFluffy · 24/10/2017 07:57

I'm not a tinsel fan, but I let the DCs choose some for their tree while we were buying baubles in John Lewis! They're happy they get some, I'm happy it's not on my tree! 🎄😂

Thick fluffy tinsel brings me joy although this year I’m also making a Pom Pom garland out of tinsel wool Grin

MarklahMarklah - that sounds interesting - can you remember where you saw it?

MarjorySunshine - I like those. Am going to the US this weekend so will keep my eye out.

I do Lametta sometimes.

MarjorySunshineDust · 24/10/2017 08:47

Cider - Looking forward to seeing how they look!

I forgot to say, I had a tinsel free tree for years but have gone back to it the last couple of years. For me, I don't like really thick tinsel draped over the branches, I prefer to poke it into the tree nearer the trunk so you get the twinkliness without it being in your face.

I don't have tinsel on the tree. I had gold beads for years but got bored. Now we have berrygarlands. I'll try and post a pic of what I mean.

We have nothing garlandy at all - just loads of lights and clear glass baubles.

Tinsel belongs in the 70s.

BananaSandwichesEveryDay · 24/10/2017 09:26

Just loads of lights - white and multi coloured - and many, many decorations, all collected over the course of our marriage. No theme other than the wonderful, happy memories of people and places, inspired by the decorations.

@BananaSandwichesEveryDay
That's sounds lovely. And what I've more or less done also. I also treasure the decorations that belonged to my gps. One being a 50 yo fairy that goes on top of the tree.

We use Angel hair

sabrinathemiddleagedwitch1 · 24/10/2017 09:47

@Tastesjustlikecherrycola85
Ooh I remember angel hair. My nan did a lovely tree with it

Tastesjustlikecherrycola85 · 24/10/2017 19:25

It does look lovely, but always end up finding half of it on the floor which ends up stuck to my feet
