Since there doesn't seem to be a poncetastic thread, and to avoid confusion with thread titles, would I be out of order to start this one?

First order of business, a toast to our dearly missed Fellatio Nelson, wherever she may be and a quote from her original thread:

^
"OK, first of all, I know it's still September by we need to start this thread now because as you all know, having a truly Poncetastic Christmas involves precision planning, strategy, bravery, heroics, and frequently martyrdom. A bit like the war in Afghanistan, only with nicer food and sparkly shoes.

So, if you, like me, actually want to make the next twelve weeks of your life a misery by hand-crafting your cards, finding a huge bucket for Nigella's turkey in brine, pickling pears, shrivelling oranges in a low oven for those rustic au naturel decorations, dragging half a holly bush back from the woods, and just generally being a smug annoying jobsworth ponce, join me on this thread.

Feel free to post photos of previous tree-trimming, cake icing or table centrepiece triumphs, discuss this year's bauble colour themes, debate the merits of Delia versus Gordon, road-test a selection of canapes and cocktails, (all in the line of duty) and link to lovely inspirational photos/craft ideas for a truly Poncetastic Christmas.

Warning: If your idea of a good Christmas involves Pizza, ITV, gravy granules or anything with 'Aunt Bessies' on the packet, this is not the thread for you".

Ooo, I've got a thing about pompoms this year - making lots in various sizes from great big ones to tiny ones, in Christmassy colours.......making a wreath, garlands, scarves (with big ones) and even jewellery (with tiny ones). Does that count as poncetastic though?

Chillywhippet · 30/10/2017 09:52

Ooh yes NotThe that's definitely poncing. One pompom, no. But making wreaths, scarves, garlands is.
Post a pic and then we can be really sure Xmas Wink

I'm doing badly. Have been derailed by family wedding and DC being in a show and me helping.

So far I have sloes in freezer. Will buy gin today.

Also have mincemeat (Delia's) in cupboard from last year but that doesn't count until I've done something with it. Last year I made an apple and mincemeat crumble for a family get together and we ate it with custard after a walk. It went down very well. Mouth watering now.

All from homegrown stuff Smile

I love this thread! It’s got me thinking - there must be a market for a book titled “How to have a poncetastic Christmas”!!

Chillywhippet · 30/10/2017 15:01

Lachatte beautiful colours. Extra poncetastic points for home grown too Star

NotTheMrMenAgain · 30/10/2017 15:08

Chilly I haven't got much to show for my efforts yet, apart from a mound of pompoms - haven't assembled much. This is a partially made garland.

I just made a chocolate fruitcake as my Christmas cake. Does anyone know if I should feed it with alcohol? This is the recipe.

HootieMcBoooob · 31/10/2017 10:42

Mountsnowdon I think I would feed it with brandy but if I had my way I'd feed everything with brandy & be damned Grin
if you ask BBCGoodFood on twitter they'll tell you for sure, they are good at answering questions.

cookiefiend · 31/10/2017 13:32

My wonderful MIL is watching my children. I am watching Christmas films and contemplating crafting. So far we have made Christmas cards. Sadly with a four year old as an assistant they consist mainly of glitter- i can already hear people complaining about the glitter covering their houses!

Mountsnowdon · 31/10/2017 13:42

Thank you HootieMcBoooob I don’t have twitter but might be able to get someone to ask for me. If not I’ll just feed it anyway.

LavenderHills · 31/10/2017 13:43

I have hit a poncing CRISIS!

We live in rural France and the much-hyped French butter shortage has actually become a reality. There is NO BUTTER in the local supermarkets. Absolutely none to be had!

It's all very WW2 around here. I've literally got a friend bringing down butter on the train from Paris for me next weekend.

Until then, all my Christmas baking will have to wait. (Sobs quietly).

TheWoollybacksWife · 31/10/2017 13:51

For the truly poncetastic touch you could try making your own butter Grin

Chillywhippet · 31/10/2017 14:10

Lovely and poncetastic NotThe

HootieMcBoooob · 31/10/2017 14:12

Mount I'll ask them & let you know

Wiifitmama · 31/10/2017 15:48

Can I join all you poncers? I have so far made mincemeat, the fruit is in alcohol for my pudding, and I have loads and loads of fig liquor maturing in the cupboard. Our fig tress produced loads this year so I am doing a new recipe with them in red wine, brandy and sugar. So hoping it turns out well!

Today I also had a go at making some cards. I wanted to try my hand at watercolours again after a long time of not picking them up. I followed a youtube tutorial and made these cards.

They are beautiful! I am stamping mine, well DS1's, when we get around to starting..

Zaphodsotherhead · 31/10/2017 16:57

I am an utterly inept poncer, and in awe of everyone's ability and enthusiasm. However, I do intend to do a mild ponce of the house, with fleecy winter throws, lights, etc. Is buying everything The Range has to offer and dotting it around my living room poncey enough? chews nails

NoWordForFluffy · 31/10/2017 17:18

Oh wow, Wiifit! They're amazing!

I'm so not artistic. At all. Envy

Wiifitmama · 31/10/2017 17:54

Thanks everyone. I am truly not artistic but I can follow a simple youtube video tutorial - has to be simple and involve no drawing! I do like the way they came out so will mass produce them over the coming weeks. No doubt I will get very bored of them!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2017 18:42

Hi everyone. I've been very busy making ribbon garlands to sell at craft fairs- I now have about 25 in stock, all different colours.

Just as a straw poll- what are everyone's 'colour themes' for Christmas? Traditional, silver, blue etc? Just wondering if I've made enough of different colours....!

LaChatte · 31/10/2017 18:49

Lav I'm also in rural (southern) France and have been able to buy butter from the Bio shops, maybe you'll have more luck there?

LaChatte · 31/10/2017 18:52

1983 my colours most years end up being red & gold, although this year I have to give in after monopolising the colour shceme for the past 3 years and allow DH and the kids to wreck decorate the tree with EVERY SINGLE DECORATION we own. I'm dreading it already.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2017 19:17

Thanks lachatte- would you traditionally be a purist, (ie red and gold only)? I haven't done one just red and gold, I have bits of green.... Dh thinks I'm insane, but I know some people me won't have anything even remotely the wrong colour.

This year I'm having duck egg and copper and white on my lounge tree, and doing a kids tree in the playroom (new this year) with all the red, gold, reindeers, robins etc. I have also planned to spray some old dinosaur toys gold and fix hooks to them. We have a miniature village which has grown too big for our sideboard so will now be in our hall, which will also get a bit of the red/gold/green traditional stuff.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 31/10/2017 19:17

Also, I am shuddering at the thought of the dc being let loose on the tree!

NotTheMrMenAgain · 31/10/2017 19:27

1983 colour/ theme wise I'm a mixture, with a leaning towards the 1950's retro side - think cutesy babycham-type reindeers and bright glass baubles. For the past few years my DM has been purple and gold only , no other colours allowed.

I am SO making some ribbon garlands.....
