Starting to think about Christmas dinner and getting some ideas :)

What would your favourite Christmas dinner consist of?

OP posts:
GrumpyOldMare · 11/09/2017 16:01

Fish and chips from the chippy!

WhatHaveIFound · 11/09/2017 16:03

Indian banquet for me. Beats turkey & trimming any day!

iklboo · 11/09/2017 16:06

We always go out for a curry but if I had to eat at home it would be roast beef or venison.

KarateKitten · 11/09/2017 16:07

Champagne and a platter of smoked salmon, smoked salmon pate, brown bread and red onion, creme fraiche, lemon wedges on the side to start.

Main is turkey, ham, roast potatoes, stuffing, gravy, pigs in blankets, brussel sprouts fried with pancetta and lemon, honey mustard roasted parsnips and carrots, bread sauce, cranberry sauce.

Desert is plum pudding and brand you butter, winter fruit compote and mums chocolate cheesecake.

Fine wines matched with each course.

Whiskey/brandy/baileys for after and maybe a cheese course left out on the table.

But in all honesty, all the above can be amazing or ordinary depending on the skill of the cook.

crochetmonkey74 · 11/09/2017 16:09

nut roast (i'm not a veggie, I just prefer it) Pigs in blankets, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yorkshire pud, roast parsnips, roast potatoes, gravy, sprouts.

Then, about 2 hours later, some good fruit cake and christmas pud on an excellent cheeseboard.

demirose87 · 11/09/2017 16:14

Three bird roast, roast potatoes, honey roast parsnips, sprouts, lots of stuffing, pigs in blankets, carrots, cauliflower and broccoli cheese, lots of gravy.

couchtospecialk · 11/09/2017 16:19

Some sort of soup with themed croutons e.g. holly leaves or stars

Nut roast or a meat-free wellington of some description, roast potatoes, mashed swede (lots of black pepper), brussels, maple-roasted carrots, broccoli, peas, stuffing balls (crispy and smallish), gravy (plenty of).

Christmas pudding dowsed in whiskey, custard and cream.

God I'm hungry...

BridgeOverBubbledWater · 11/09/2017 16:25

Karatekitten can I come to your house for Christmas! That salmon starter sounds divine!

asongforthelovers · 11/09/2017 16:29

Soup, crusty bread.

Turkey, gravy, roast goose fat potatoes, boiled potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower carrots, parsnips.

Victoria sponge.

Aw I'm hungry now, can't wait for Christmas dinner!!

RhinoGirl · 11/09/2017 16:29

Mums whiskey patè on warm bread to start,

Roast turkey, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, pigs in blankets and looooads of stuffing balls and lovely thick gravy.

Hot mince pies and whipped cream/Mackies icecream and malteasers.

Cheese board after. Lots of alcohol.

How many sleeps until christmas again? 😳

PeanutButterIsEverything · 11/09/2017 16:30

Your menu sounds amazing karate although I think it would take me all day to get through those courses so I would spread it out between about 12 and 6pm! I would also add in a veggie Wellington made with butternut squash, chestnuts, kale blue cheese, walnuts and cranberries and swap the turkey for a stuffed chicken breast joint. And lashings of bread sauce!

Putting on weight just thinking about it Grin

OvariesBeforeBrovaries · 11/09/2017 16:33

One of those Bernard Matthews circle turkey things, lots and lots and lots and lots of roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, pigs in blankets, peas, sweetcorn, carrots, GF yorkie puds, GF gravy.

Followed by chocolate Grin

millifiori · 11/09/2017 16:33

Homemade cream of artichoke soup (my mum's recipe which DC insist on)
Roast turkey with pigs in blankets, home made pork, apricot and nut stuffing, roast potatoes and parsnips, glazed carrots, sprouts.
Homemade christmas pud flaming with brandy for us and chocolate log for DC.
Champagne, red wine, coffee, crackers, silly games, candles, carols.

I love Christmas to be very traditional.

Winterc00kie · 11/09/2017 16:33

Selection of English cheeses including black bomber and Suffolk blue.

Xmas pudding served with homemade rum butter and accompanied by a very cold Asti Spumante.

brieandcrackers · 11/09/2017 16:49

A toffee and pecan roulade is an absolute must for me!! And pigs in blankets of course, there was a near riot and tears in eyes when my DF forgot them one year Grin

123MothergotafleA · 11/09/2017 16:55

Karate kitten has nailed it. I'm booked in at yours already.
Yes, I agree that the skill of the cook makes All the difference in the world to those classic dishes.
Yum, I'm excited just thinking of your fabulous spread there.

MrsMargeSimpson · 11/09/2017 16:58

We have:

Home made chicken liver pâté

Three/Five bird roast (aldi special Grin )
Braised red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Roast potatoes
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing
Yorkies

Pudding last year was the croquembouche from aldi but I wasn't overly impressed. My try a chocolate roulade this year.

MrsPworkingmummy · 11/09/2017 18:44

Ooooo I love this thread.

Every Christmas morning, we always have a glass of Bucksfizz, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (made with a ton of double cream, lurpack, salt and pepper) on a bagel for breakfast.

Depending on how many we're hosting, a typical lunch would consist of: Roast turkey and gammon (glazed in a brown sugar and clove rub which DH makes) roast potatoes, carrots with honey and coriander, Brussels sprouts -often friend with garlic and pancetta cubes, homemade Yorkshire puddings, swede (again, with lots of cream, butter, salt and pepper. Notice a trend? Ha), pigs in blankets and homemade stuffing.

For pudding, we have a homemade Christmas cake (made by MIL), a novelty sponge Christmas cake (usually M&S or Sainsburys) and a roulade.

If it were ever just DH, children and me (and not the extended family who usually come to us), we'd have a prawn or lobster stater of some sort, beef wellington for main and a cheeseboard for pudding.

We also host Christmas dinner each year (for between 15-20). As we've already cooked lunch, we tend to order M&S platters, put out any leftover gammon, crisps, dips, cheeses etc. (Basically stuff I've collected and shoved away in the cupboard in the months leading up to Christmas) This is always followed by carols around the piano. Just lush!

We absolutely love hosting, but have a new baby due in Jan so are considering having a quieter day with just us for lunch, then everyone for dinner as usual.

Hollyhop17 · 11/09/2017 19:15

I'm very jealous of carols by the piano MrsP! Sounds wonderful.

Pancakes and bucks fizz for breakfast. Soup and baked camembert with bread for starters. Roast turkey, red cabbage, carrots brocoli, stuffing, pigs in blankets, yorkshires for dinner and then trifle and chocolate log for dessert, plis whatever home made dessert I can think of (cranberry cheesecake last year).

Booze and cheese board to finish off!!

linandleo · 11/09/2017 19:32

If it were up to me, I'd have a really lovely afternoon tea on Christmas Day. Sadly, my family think differently.

So, my ideal traditional enough to please the rest Christmas dinner would be:

Some sort of terrine to start with. Potentially pork and pistachio/apricot.

Guinea Fowl, roast potatoes, dauphinoise potatoes, stuffing, sausages in bacon, green beans, garlicky mushrooms, carrots, broccoli and gravy.

Creme brulee or chocolate mousse for pudding.

Cheese & cake for later.

CallMeKate · 11/09/2017 21:01

We're having:-

Lentil soup
Prawn cocktail or
Chicken liver pate
All served with fresh breads

Nut Roast
Turkey, ham cooked in apple, sage and onion stuffing, chestnut stuffing, brussel sprouts, buttered carrots, broccoli, a side of cauliflower cheese, yorkshires, pigs in blankets, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, potato croquettes (home made). Jamie's gravy, cranberry sauce.
Veg curry

Trifle
Profiteroles
Strawberry gateaux

Cheeseboard/coffee/tea

I'm feeding 10 adults and 6 children this year and have done a pre order menu for the adults. The DGC tend not to eat much of the dinner and will mainly eat snacky things throughout the day. They settled for cheese toasties last year Grin

MuddlingThroughLife · 11/09/2017 21:01

Turkey crown
Pigs in blankets
Cauliflower cheese
Honey roasted parsnips
Roasted pots
Sprouts
Carrots
Swede

Lush. We had all that yesterday but with pork instead of turkey Grin 🎗

JustHereForThePooStories · 11/09/2017 21:07

I love Christmas.

I'd like-

Charcuterie to start- decent selection of cheese, meats, olives, roasted peppers, and lovely breads with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Baked ham with mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts (with little crosses on the bottom), and bread sauce.

Ice-cream sundae with honeycomb ice cream, crushed Maltesers, salted caramel sauce, whipped cream, and chocolate flake.
