Looking for board games to play with dd2 who will be 10 at xmas, nothing that goes on for too long. Games we like and have already are Connect 4, Snakes and Ladders, Frustration, Snap, Top Trumps, Guess Who, Yes/No game. Anything else in the fun but quick category?

Just make sure you don't get the NSFW edition if you're playing with kids :o

Cagliostro · 06/06/2017 13:42

I mean of exploding kittens. I don't think there's an Adult version of Whot.

cornflakegirl · 06/06/2017 14:02

Love Letters
Exploding kittens
Set
Forbidden Island
Othello
Sushi Go
Quirkle
Phase 10 (can take longer, but you can stop and start between phases)
Quixx

cornflakegirl · 06/06/2017 14:07

One Night Ultimate Werewolf - v popular with a variety of ages - involves lying and deduction

TeenAndTween · 06/06/2017 14:09

The London Game
Backgammon
Chess

Slightly longer games, but you don't lose the will to live when playing them.

BluePancakes · 06/06/2017 14:10

We have Sleeping Queens, Exploding Kittens, Gubs, Forbidden Island, Forbidden Desert, Fluxx (there are lots of different ones to choose, we have both Stars and Pirates versions), Line links, Timeline (lots of versions to choose from, and can easily be made more difficult for adults), Labyrinth, Mastermind, Mindtrap, and some others that probably take too long.

BadTasteFlump · 07/06/2017 15:01

Favourites in our house (DC ages from 10 - 19) are Logo, both versions, Trivial Pursuits Family Edition and Five Second Rule.

CaulkheadUpNorf · 07/06/2017 15:03

Maybe go along to a board game Cafe and try some games there so you can both see what you enjoy?

franksidebottom · 07/06/2017 15:51

Wow thankyou, It'll take me to xmas to work through this list, I haven't heard of half of these games, another reason why I don't want a long board game is so me and dd2 can play whilst Dd3 (2) is napping as she is a wrecker so I'm not being a meanie

We got Labyrinth at Christmas but it was put away and totally forgotten about until last weekend! It's great. Quick set up, only a few rules to learn and they're easy to learn.

For a quick game we just deal 4 cards each, rather than dividing the whole pack.

My DS,s are 9 and 12 and both loved it. I loved it a lot as I kicked their arses at it. Grin

franksidebottom · 07/06/2017 16:05

OvO I am very competitive when I play against my dds, but sadly they usually whip my arse, and I really am trying my bestGrin

If you're on an external deadline, then I would recommend some of the card games:
Dobble (finding the symbol on your card that matches the central card - there is always exactly one)
Set (finding three cards linked by colour, shape, shading and number)
Rat a tat cat (getting the lowest score across four cards, two of which are hidden)
All very short, but you can play multiple rounds to extend. And you can count up part way through a round if you have to stop suddenly!

franksidebottom · 07/06/2017 17:12

Cornflake girl - yes I'm thinking card games may be the way to go. I've put dobble in my amazon basket. I also like the look of the London game TeenandTween suggested. I have yet to look at Exploding Kittens but this seems popular

Oh and also Maponimos, various versions, we have the UK and Europe ones. You need a big table though!

imip · 07/06/2017 22:12

Battleship and trivial pursuit (I play adult cards/dd kids cards) are favourites here.

What about a puzzle?

franksidebottom · 07/06/2017 22:29

imip- we have puzzles but I'm usually left to finish them as dd2 will wander off and I hate not finishing what we started! We both love boardgames but she needs some new ones now. I always add to her collection every birthday and christmas. I tend to play safe and stick to ones we see on tv or I played as a child so my boardgame knowledge is slim

Ha, ha, when the kids disappear from a puzzle, I'm happy to get them off my turf so I can obsessively finish Grin

I have 4 dds all primary age and the older will play Orchard Games - shopping List etc with the younger ones. A deck of cards also, we've started playing games like fish. And the older two (10 and almost 9), often play chess with each other and dh (I can't play chess!).

wanderingcloud · 08/06/2017 06:45

My OH has just got us into playing co-operative board games, where you play together and either all win or all lose. The one he's got is called Pandemic - you work as a team to try and control global outbreaks of disease but there are others I believe. Pandemic is great fun; it's not easy to win!

Grapefruits · 08/06/2017 06:48

Cluedo!

sandgrown · 08/06/2017 06:48

Articulate kids version.

IchBinEinBerliner1963 · 08/06/2017 06:49

Monopoly Empire. It's a faster game than the other versions of Monopoly.

Cagliostro · 08/06/2017 07:16

Wandering I love Pandemic, it's on my wishlist.

Other great co-ops are forbidden island/desert, castle panic and flash point fire rescue :) oooh and a card game called hanabi.

MargotMoon · 08/06/2017 07:28

YAHTZEE!

Minniemagoo · 08/06/2017 07:32

Destination works well for all age groups if you have younger ones. We have the Harry Potter edition.
