I think we're going to need a 3rd thread by the autumn at this rate of chat!

HairsprayBabe · 20/07/2017 11:22

We still have a christmas eve hamper and as Biddy says the contents changed as we grew. it was used partly to occupy us for the day and partly to chill us out in the evening, now we just do it cause it is an extra bit of magic!

It used to be a new pjs, new toothbrush a video and some colouring when we were very small.

From about 4-10 it was tickets to the panto in the afternoon a letter from father christmas, the magic key, reindeer food etc. some quieter activities, colouring, baking ingredients etc. Plus new Pjs, some bubblebath, and a new toothbrush!

In our teen years it was cinema tickets for that evening, a gingerbread house kit. Crimbo mugs (the same every year) some nice hot choccy, cinema snacks, new PJ's and a new toothbrush!

Now the youngest, my Dbro, will be 19 this christmas, so for the last few years mum sticks some teeny liquors into the hamper for hot chocolate with a kick!
Dad has whisky, me and mum have white chocolate mint liqueur, Dsis likes baylies, Dbro opts for salted caramel vodka, and oddly DP likes a shot of jager in his hot chocolate!

Me and DM split the cost of the hamper, as I drag DP along and Dbro and Dsis are still in education.

We also used to have a "December 1st" hamper that brings in all the little festive bits and bobs that can be done in the lead up to christmas, crafts, advent calendars, christmas yankee candles, christmas mugs. Mum just used printable colouring sheets/crafts and re-used the candles and mugs so no extra cost, just a little bit of excitement to start the festive period off.

Hello all,

So for those asking about the Christmas tree pancakes, I've done both methods. Quickest though is to do big pancakes and then just cut them out (easiest for an impatient toddler!) . However , to cheat, go for the Christmas tree crumpets instead from morrisons!

Our DS will be almost 3 this Christmas, so his Christmas Eve box is evolving every year. For his first Christmas, he was almost 1, so it contained new pjs , dressing gown, reindeer food, santa key, DVD of the snowman, plate for santa and a little snowman cuddly toy.

Last year it had a Christmas book, pjs, the bits for santa (key etc) and then also a little hot choc and a treat.

This year, I actually haven't thought about it yet...

We do some things for us in a Christmas Eve box too - usually Christmas comfy trousers , our Christmas jumpers, hot choc, yummy chocolates , m&s crisps, those kind of bits! This year I'm putting a small bottle of fizz in, as I'll have a 2-4 week old so will finally be able to have some fizz again! Christmas beer for hubby most likely!

HandbagCrazy · 20/07/2017 14:11

I feel like I've missed out as I've never had a Christmas Eve box / hamper Xmas Sad
We were always allowed to open 1 present on Christmas Eve which was always pjs but that's it I am conveniently forgetting the millions of things my parents did to make it magic I feel like I should make my own but don't know if I can really as we're away for Christmas. I will def be taking some Christmassy pjs.

Everyone's plans sound lovely Xmas Smile

Wheelycote · 20/07/2017 17:52

On topic of christmas eve boxes, just found this website:

www.thewoodenboxmill.co.uk/plain-wooden-mdf-boxes/wooden-crates-apple-boxes/plain-wooden-crates-or-apple-boxes
I might get the crates and do as christmas eve boxes. Theyre selling on ebay for alot more money

Wheelycote · 20/07/2017 18:03

Im getting so excited its stupid Grin

and.....i came across two ideas for those with younger children wish id known about this one when my two were small

Put an old fashioned key (a magical santa's own key) in the christmas eve box with a tag and a bag of magical reindeer food.

Im so giddy its sad!!!

tootsieglitterballs · 20/07/2017 19:20

We do a key like this - except ours is an east of India one - its so lovely!

BlueIsYou · 20/07/2017 20:02

Can I please join? Have not read thread but I'm Christmas mad

I get highly emotional when Christmas is over Blush And the music that's played again and again each year, the shopping, the wrapping, I LOVE IT ALL!

....hides back under shell and pretends to enjoy 'other seasons'

OhOurBilly · 20/07/2017 20:03

I am equally giddy wheely

I'm starting all our Christmas traditions for DS as he'll be 13 months so, Christmas eve box will have the plate to leave for FC, new pj's (or else the reindeer will poo on you, this is family law) planning on getting me, the baby amd my sis matching pj's if I can! Christmas book (the church mice at Christmas and a baby nativity book.) The lush ickle bot bath bomb. Reindeer food. Probably a DVD and a teddy of some kind.

I bought an old ornate key from eBay years ago to make a Santa Key (gold paint and add some accents with nail polish, tied with a Christmas ribbon)

My teenagers have their Christmas Hamper on 1st Dec now (started this last year and they preferred it)

DD is 15 and still expects the same level of commitment from The Elves Xmas Grin only now instead of Primark PJs , they bring shorts/vests from Victoria Secret Pink .
She commented today that she likes her Winter bedding on 1st Nov and the Christmas fleece on a week before Christmas.
I have created ....A Monster .

Wheelycote · 21/07/2017 06:27

70 Grin love it

NoWordForFluffy · 21/07/2017 06:36

She sounds ace, 70!

HairsprayBabe · 21/07/2017 07:55

My mother says the same thing about me 70! Blush

I can't wait to start my own family to pass the festive fever on to them, won't be for a couple of years yet I don't think though!

SideOrderofSprouts · 21/07/2017 11:02

I love your daughter 70

We do Christmas bedding on the 1st of December. Tree usually goes up last weekend of November. Then Christmas Eve hamper has pjs and toiletries and one present each Tony wrap so the kids know which is their paper be the next day

DD(11) loves her Santa duvet set - even though she still generally sleeps ON the duvet rather than under it! (Even in midwinter). That is in the box that comes from the storage unit at the start of December (along with 3 mugs, candles that I will some year use in an advent wreath, DD's advent calendar, a few seasonal books and DVDs, DD's Christmas fleece blanket to curl up under, and a couple of hand towels). Luckily, the Elves never made an appearance, and she has known for years that I filled the advent calendar.

Although I do have a request for onesie PJs this winter.....

Given her demands to know "who is Santa - is it you?!!" last Christmas Eve, and a few times since, I think she has come to the end of believing (although we haven't confirmed yet). So there may be 3 stockings this year...as my plan has always been to have one each for DH and I as well once FC is no longer filling them, and allowing everyone to put some bits in for each other.

VivaJen · 21/07/2017 14:19

Is anyone doing anything for "Christmas in July" - it's only a few days away!!!! Obviously it's Rudolph Day but I do like to watch a Christmas Movie, I'm hoping that there will be some on TV.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/07/2017 15:29

I'll be at work - I used to take the day off when my DC were Nursery age and as it falls in the school holidays , I made sure that I was on leave that week .(To watch QVC Christmas in JUly Xmas Grin )

Then they started doing the last couple of hours on the 24th as well. Then all of the 24th and 25th .
But I did notice with online browsing that the tat Clearance items were being re-branded Christmas in July and wheeled out.
Very disappointing.

This year the TSV (Todays Special Value) is Food and someone mentioned biscuits (I think Churchill?) so I'm not missing much (I wanted a tree ) . I can browse on the QVC App when I get a minute to myself.

DD and I watch "Lost Christmas" usually in July/August then again in December Xmas Grin

Primark had parkas and padded jackets in store today ........ just saying Xmas Wink . I'm sure the Christmas Jumpers won't be far behind !

NoWordForFluffy · 21/07/2017 17:33

DD was wearing her Christmas jumper today. Not sure why!

Trudee · 21/07/2017 19:02

Hi all, I think it's time I start checking out the Xmas threads again.
I got made redundant at Easter and I've only just found another job but I don't start until September so no pay until October Sad
I was starting to think we'd have to cancel xmas this year! I was so relieved to get this job and it's actually better paid than my last one Smile so I can enjoy my Christmas prep once more!
My dc's have started informing me of what's going on their Christmas lists now they know we'll be able to afford xmas lol.
I also have ds birthday in November so I best get organised so I know where my pay will be disappearing to!
I've been checking out some Harry Potter bits and think I've blown my first months wages already Shock

blacksmiths09 · 21/07/2017 19:40

Just seen one of the local village pubs are releasing their Xmas menu this Wednesday! 😮🤗🎄

It's coming folks!

My sky planner is FULL of crimbo films that have been shown this month on movies24! 🎄🎄🎄

I will be doing a PROPER countdown after Monday, as that's DS' birthday, and we will be on the downward run towards Christmas then! (My birthday is in November, but I don't bother thinking about that too much in the grand scheme of things!)

QuimJongUn · 22/07/2017 09:10

It's so autumnal here (NE) today. Has been all week. We've just booked our anniversary trip to Scotland (we go every year) which is in late October, and one of the pre-Christmas milestones. Summer has been a complete damp squib here, and yesterday I saw golden leaves on the ground. For all these reasons and more, I'm feeling quite excited... Xmas Grin

tootsieglitterballs · 22/07/2017 12:36

It's been very autumnal here today today, although the sun did peep through earlier! Loved waking up to the sound of rain! I just love autumn almost as much as winter. However, I'm going to slow down here as I don't want to wish summer away!

NoWordForFluffy · 22/07/2017 12:51

It was monsoon season here late last night and is a touch grey today. The sun peeps through occasionally though. We are about a mile from The Open (golf), so the roads are utter chaos right now! We've managed to escape, via the very long way. 😂
