After a busy weekend, DH was asking about the reaction of my family who came for lunch, and neighbor who popped in for tea/cake, to the new bookcase in the living room. As part of the general discussion, and how happy WE both are with it, (including that no, I don't think we need a 50" tv as the 42" there is big enough!) - DH remarked that he is very happy with it as "we will finally have a proper place to put the Christmas tree" Xmas Grin!! Completely unprompted!! I must be winning the Christmas battle on him Xmas Grin

"Marypoppins" sitting on a trail, looking at a pond while DD naps sounds blissful!

BiddyPop · 03/07/2017 09:40

Sorry bold fail there Marypoppins (slinks off muttering about the need for extra caffeine on Mondays tyo remember everything....)

NoWordForFluffy · 03/07/2017 14:36

Ah...I loved the napping days, Marypoppins

I just had a Groupon 'Christmas in July' alert pop up. Must take a look!

NoWordForFluffy · 03/07/2017 14:39

Ooh...look at these! 😂

Hi can I join you. I decided to go with park this year. I have 900 with of love to shop gift cards. I'm slightly regretting it.

Starsandwishes · 03/07/2017 14:45

oops posted to soon. Mainly because you can't spend it in primark. They do a combi primark and super market card but that's not good to me :( I probably leave it as it is though. I have 420 left to pay so doing OK and at least I know it's paid for well the bulk of it Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 03/07/2017 14:50

That's a really good idea, Stars. I'm sure you'll do OK with those, even if you have to change your mind slightly about what you're getting. Xmas Grin

I now have £120 in Nectar points, so they're creeping up nicely.

It's normally July when M&S reveal their Christmas food for the year. Exciting times!

Starsandwishes · 03/07/2017 14:56

Ha with my older 2 I'm giving theme the actual gift cards and then they will just get stocking fidlers to open.

My middle 2 have less value cards. With them I will do the same but add a few middle type presents so they have something to open.

With my toddlers I will go with the flow Grin

I wish they would make it better though I'm.sure my 14 year old would love 50.00 I'm primark and 200 in tesco gift card Hmm

Starsandwishes · 03/07/2017 14:57

Fillers*

TheWoollybacksWife · 03/07/2017 17:15

Stars my DDs have had Love to Shop vouchers before and have had no problems spending them. New Look, Argos, Debenhams and River Island all take them as does Pizza Express and lots of other retailers.

Starsandwishes · 03/07/2017 17:32

Yeah I know it's just that primark is cheap :) never mind. If I have a bit of money near Xmas I could get a voucher card from store.

tootsieglitterballs · 03/07/2017 20:22

Hi @NoWordForFluffy - that tree is beautiful! Just showed DH though and he is adamant we will be having a real one again - he was such a Scrooge when I met him, I've turned him into a right Christmas loving chap!

NoWordForFluffy · 03/07/2017 20:26

Thank you, tootsie. I hope it lives up to expectations!

I liked our real tree, but I'm crap with lights etc, so I think this is the best option for us. I think it looks properly Christmassy. And we've got a shed load of baubles as well, so it'll be good to get them all used!

73kittycat73 · 03/07/2017 22:00

Hi all. Xmas Smile lovely to hear of all your Christmas prep.
he was such a Scrooge when I met him, I've turned him into a right Christmas loving chap!
Nice move Tootsie. Xmas Grin I wonder how we are all on the real v fake Christmas trees? We always had a real one growing up but I have no fond memories of scents or anything that people talk of. (The only tree I remember is the one my younger brother nudged and all the needled dropped off! They literally came crashing down. We only had it a week.) I much prefer fake. More branches and I like the look of them better. Nothing against real trees mind. So what's the cencus on MN, real or fake?
Oh yeah, don't forget that Movies 24 is showing Christmas films every weekday through July.
Now I must dash as Big Brother is on. (Did I really just admit to watching that crap? Xmas Wink Xmas Grin )

NoWordForFluffy · 04/07/2017 06:20

We always had fake ones growing up, and until 2 years' ago we did too. Then I got a romantic notion into my head about a real tree...which has now gone, and I'm all about the fake tree! 😂 Though a really nice one, not the sparse one of my past!

173 🎄

tootsieglitterballs · 04/07/2017 08:00

Well growing up, until I was about 10, we had fake, and then we started getting real as we got a conservatory that was lovely and cold so it kept beautifully
When I moved out, I got real for a couple of years and then suddenly prices went sky high, so I bought a good fake one! After I met my now DH, we got a real one as I wanted to make Christmas really special for him, and ever since then, it's been real!

I love going and choosing the tree, the disasters we have with it the time spent hoovering all the needles up , how it's looks etc, but best of all is not having to store it 🙈!!

However, every year , despite loving the real one so much, I do suggest fake to save on money in the long run and allow me to put it up much earlier!! He's just not having any of it!

HairsprayBabe · 04/07/2017 08:08

How do you Nectar points add upto so much! I think I have about £4 but we rarely shop in Sainsbo's

I spend my tesco points throughout the year so they never add up to much either, same with boots points! Xmas Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 04/07/2017 08:31

I shop regularly in Sainsbury's, which helps. Also, they have very regular bonus points offers throughout the year. And, as I have a delivery pass, I get semi-regular bonus points given to me (I've had 2 x £5 in the last 2 months, though I'm still waiting for the second lot to be added).

I also buy online via Nectar (though use Quidco more these days) and I do the Tag Your Bag through Oxfam, so get points for anything I've donated which sells, and there's sometimes bonus points on that too.

I ended last year on about £12.00, so we've done well so far this year!

I'm saving my Tesco points which I'll convert to Pizza Express vouchers for when we are away in December. I've £13.00 at the moment. I've also got £18.00 in Boots' points, but I'm not sure what I'm doing with them!

BiddyPop · 04/07/2017 13:43

We always had real at home, and still do (in the sitting room - DM now has 2 more fake trees in the conservatory and study!).

When DH and I bought our first house, we got the keys in September to the shell (builder's finish) and worked like demons to finish it off. We were getting married in February. And we were smashed broke! (Still had a concrete floor downstairs, bare floorboards upstairs and we had 2 folding chairs to sit on). So I got a very cheap 5' fake in Primark and splashed out on a small collection of decent-ish glass decorations there, which were sparse on the tree, and a set of lights and 3 strings of tinsel to hide the bareness. We've used that tree at least 10 times since - every year we travel "home" (lots), the year DD was 1 (Boxing Day babe) and probably another couple. But I really do like a real tree when we stay in our own home.

We are in our current house 15 years now. DH announced the other day that we finally have a proper place to put the tree (it's tried a few spots over the years!) as we got a big bookcase built in which includes the tv, so that's not in the sittingroom window anymore. So I suspect we may have a real one this year.

If we don't, I will be sourcing a replacement fake. The Primark one is still functioning, surprisingly well!, but it's starting to get a bit bare and we have a LOT more decorations now which we can't fit on it. So if that spot is the permanent spot, we'll need a 6, 6.5 or 7 foot tree really. I must look again at Balsam Wood - and if I pass my interview next week and get a promotion, I may splash out on that. Otherwise, hunting for a decent one in Ireland is harder, but probably places like good garden centres may be an option.

73kittycat73 · 04/07/2017 14:54

but best of all is not having to store it.

Ooh, never thought of that!

Your Primark tree sounds lovely Biddy. A real Christmas tradition. Xmas Smile

NoWordForFluffy I collect Nectar points for Christmas too. Last year we bought the Christmas treats with it. Had about £80.00 worth last year. I think I've got around £25-£30 worth at the moment.

FireflyGirl · 04/07/2017 15:54

Biddy DH was also obsessed with getting a 50" TV. I told him that the 42" worked just fine, and it was silly to spend money on a new TV, particularly when I was on ML so we only had one wage. Then my Dad bought a new one, and guess who inherited his perfectly good old 50" one... I can just imagine how DH's eyes must have lit up when my Dad mentioned it Grin

And don't take the mick out of that set Fluffy - DMIL bought it as a joke present for me a couple of years ago. I put it up with all the other Christmas decorations! She was more than a little surprised!

I'm all about the fake trees, I'm afraid. I don't see the point in making unnecessary work for myself cleaning up after a real one. I get a small real one from Lidl, they're about £5, and that goes on the kitchen counter top with some scandi decorations and battery lights, but the main one is fake from B&Q. Think I've mentioned this before, but you can't really see the actual tree once I've finished decorating it. My sister once commented that it looked like Christmas had vomited all over it Grin Think I got all the Christmas spirit in our family! I have been known to surreptitiously put up decorations in her house when I went round to walk her dog...

73kittycat73 · 04/07/2017 18:21

but you can't really see the actual tree once I've finished decorating it.

Same here! Xmas Grin Tinsel, tinsel and more tinsel!

My sister once commented that it looked like Christmas had vomited all over it.

That's the look I go for every year. Xmas Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 04/07/2017 20:53

Ooh. Tree arrived! DH says it's VERY heavy. Hopefully that bodes well for its bushiness! 😂🎄

73kittycat73 · 05/07/2017 01:45

Does anyone here do hampers for Christmas? Do you have any recommendations of where to buy them, cheaply as possible? I need a smallish one and a medium one. For the wrap, bow, shredded paper and basket they are about £10.00 on Ebay (The small ones anyway.). I begrudge paying out money that could be used paying for more Christmas pesents. They also won't be used for long.

HairsprayBabe · 05/07/2017 08:00

I do hampers, depends how much time you have, but I scour charity shops throughout the year, buy up "easter" baskets in the spring sales and use unorthodox hamper boxes e.g the works did three hat boxes for a £6.99 a few weeks ago or B&M homes have plastic baskets that work well. Wilko did some good baskets a few years a go £2.50 each I have re-used them for a few years now.

For my family and In laws I re-use baskets from before - jars and bottles too, as they all love the goodies but don't really need a new basket every year.

Also people at work know I "do" hampers so if they have jars/bottles/baskets in the year that they don't want they give them to me.

Finally for small one person hampers I just fill a nice gift bag with shredded tissue and the goodies, easier for them to transport and very cheap to do!
