I need some inspiration!
Am hosting for in-laws and want it to be a bit special but easy, enough but nothing too substantial.....
I can only think of chicken liver pate or prawn cocktail but how 80's is that?!
Help!!

Smoked salmon and brown bread with a tiny side of prawns.

My top tip is set the table early on, sit down and eat your starters, leave the table having straightened it, and then return an hour or so later for your main.

You will be more in the mood for your dinner by then.

We must be really uncouth, we just go straight into the Roast main, and maybe have a bit of yule log for afters, no starters!

Patriciathestripper1 · 18/12/2016 22:49

Prawn cocktail

Tootsiepops · 18/12/2016 22:50

Mushroom soup

Shinyshoes2 · 18/12/2016 22:51

Prawn cocktail
Have to think of something else tho as I have a pregnant guest this year

PaperdollCartoon · 18/12/2016 22:52

We never have starters but we have crisps and dip out from about 12pm, lunch at about 2/half 2

Twooter · 18/12/2016 22:53

We miss starters too - hard enough getting timings right without having to go sit and eat at the crucial time

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/12/2016 22:54

nothing, but nice olives with a cocktail would be nice.

ChoccyJules · 18/12/2016 22:54

When we host we do smoked salmon on brown bread; my DM does various trays of indian and chinese starters, like party nibbles, which are carried around with the fizz.

MadisonAvenue · 18/12/2016 22:56

No starter here, just the roast and then pudding.

Hawkmoth · 18/12/2016 22:59

When I was pregnant my mum got me a lovely pork terrine :)

I like prawns though. On a nice big lettuce leaf.

WhisperingLoudly · 18/12/2016 22:59

God no starter!

We have home made bread, smoked salmon and champagne for breakfast - by which point the DC have eaten a good proportion of their Christmas chocs -

By the time we get to lunch they've had a good proportion of the rest and I may have picked at a few so we go straight in. We do have a feast though.

No starters here, crisps, olives etc around midday then straight into the main course about 2.30.

fakenamefornow · 18/12/2016 23:07

Smoked mackerel pate.

Dear easy, I leave out the houseradish. Do it the day before and put a small amount in individual ramikins. I use the glass dishes Gu chocolate mousse come in. Cover with clingfilm, put a twist of lemon and a sprig of parsley on top before serving. Present on a small plate with a triangle of thin sliced toast and a few green leaves and halved cherry tomatoes. Cheap, tasty and very easy to serve on Christmas day.

Piffpaffpoff · 18/12/2016 23:09

No starters here, just straight into turkey etc.

Floralnomad · 18/12/2016 23:10

My mum hosts Christmas Day and we always have a choice of prawn cocktail , smoked salmon with brown bread and butter or whatever crab creation my sister has organised .

TheNaze73 · 18/12/2016 23:16

Butternut squash & chilli soup

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 18/12/2016 23:18

Smoked salmon pate, salad and brown bread. Or duck pate for those who don't do salmon.

MaryBerrybeard · 18/12/2016 23:19

Starter on Xmas Day is just wrong! Need as much room as possible for the roast spuds and Yorkshire puds!

VanillaSugarAndChristmasSpice · 18/12/2016 23:19

Foi gras, caviar and six dozen oysters.

Princesspink999 · 18/12/2016 23:23

Bits of M and S party food for about 3 hours before main lunch while we have drinks, presents, chat. Mainly smoked salmon, prawns but also belly pork, mozzarella, crisps, olives etc

RealHouswifeofBury · 18/12/2016 23:44

Prawn and smoked salmon platter with a Lidl lobster plonked on it, to try and make it look special Grin

00100001 · 18/12/2016 23:48

No starter unless a glass of champers counts? Don't want to fill up and dc are too young - miss starters though makes a bit more special as I never have 3 courses.
