Waste of tummy space.

MrsBellefleur · 18/12/2016 12:46

We've got prawn cocktail this year but other years have been soup, pate and toast triangles with cucumber or creamy garlic mushroom and crusty bread.

Blueflowers2011 · 18/12/2016 12:48

smoked salmon, sliced avocado, slice of lemon and warm sliced baguette bread

MavisTheToreador · 18/12/2016 12:48

Salmon pate and little toasty thingies.

CremeEggThief · 18/12/2016 12:49

None. I'm 38 and I have never made a starter for any meal at home.

Scarydinosaurs · 18/12/2016 12:49

Camembert with veg went down a treat last year. Mini ones each or one between two.

TataEs · 18/12/2016 12:50

starter? on xmas day??? waste of space surely?

Wait4nothing · 18/12/2016 12:50

We've had Camembert wedges a few years (Aldi's are nice)
I avoid anything too big and try to minimise bread!

letsgetcake · 18/12/2016 12:52

Of course you have a starter, we eat starter at like 11 then main at 3 then pud at 6. Its great and ensures we are eating all day!
This year we are having baked camembert with posh bread, so excited!

Ah. We do similar but our starter is a light breakfast/brunch. Grin

WhoKnowsWhereTheT1meG0es · 18/12/2016 12:57

We just have nibbles around 12, posh crisps, olives, salami etc. Not at the table, just wander in and out of the kitchen and pick at things. Then straight into the main course around 2.30.

PipersPiping · 18/12/2016 12:58

We dont have a starter on Christmas day but we have prawn cocktail on New Years day and i love it!

howthefuckshouldiknow · 18/12/2016 12:59

Mmmmm starters, it's the one day each year that we have starters, a bit of a highlight though I do love a prawn cocktail. Some great ideas here, thanks!

A spoon of prawn cocktail on a slice of smoked salmon with brown bread, wedge of lemon and some dill.

Pestilence13610 · 18/12/2016 13:06

Last year we had tempura tofu and prawns with homemade japanese pickles and red pepper sauce.

AtSea1979 · 18/12/2016 13:07

None, just turkey dinner and trifle at around 1pm then buffet tea around 6ish

Bluntness100 · 18/12/2016 13:08

I'm looking for inspiration too. I usually do an anti pasti. As in mozzarella, tomatoes, pesto, salami , garlic croutons and a little rocket or lambs leaf on the side. It's a small portion plated. Can't decide if I want to do the same this year or not.

We do salmon with scrambled eggs for brekkie. So not sure what else to do for starter. My husbands mum used to do soup, but I just find that bags you up too much.

Ellapaella · 18/12/2016 13:12

I do smoked salmon and king prawns. Not too filling but a good excuse to start the meal with a glass of cold prosseco

Blueflowers2011 · 18/12/2016 13:53

starter every year!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 18/12/2016 14:07

We don't have a first course for Christmas lunch, neither DH nor I ever had one as children and neither of us feel the need to start now.

SwedishEdith · 18/12/2016 14:07

Prawn cocktail if do one but probably just nice canapes instead this year.

Notso · 18/12/2016 14:22

I'm not doing one this year, because I want to eat early. In the past we have the starter at lunchtime and then the roast at about 6.
We have poached salmon with baby spinach and lemon Creme fraiche Stilton and pear salad, mini Yorkshire pudding with beef and horseradish, warm goats cheese salad with raspberry dressing, beef hashcake with mustard sauce, spicy squash soup, smoked salmon fishcake

MissisBee · 18/12/2016 14:26

I think it's melon this year, not sure as SIL has offered to provide. We would usually have that, soup or a light salady thing. Once dsis made smoked salmon tart things that were way too filling. We've always done starters, so it's expected by the family. There's usually a fairly long intermission before the main course gets served up

foodiefil · 18/12/2016 14:38

We have a seafood platter (family in the food business who get it from their fish guy) it has all the usual suspects on - salmon, prawns, mackerel, lobster, mussels etc or soup.

So much the same as a lot of people really! Seafood seems popular because it's quite light. I love prawn cocktail though so shame they won't have it!

Mackerel pate is lovely and easy
