Is anyone disappointed with their advent calendar?

I've never had an advent calendar before apart from the odd cadburys one, but this year, for some reason best known to himself, husband bought me a Schleich farm one. Obviously I'm an adult, but I'm wondering if children get a bit disappointed with this type of calendar? On Wednesday I had a sticker, yesterday a cabbage, and today a pitchfork. Hopefully tomorrow will be good, as I can tell by the shape that Sunday's going to be another bit of fence.

I made my teen daughters advent calendars for the first time this year after being inspired by mumsnet, and stuck to a £25 each budget. I wish someone would make one for me.

I just wondered if anyone else was a bit disappointed, or if not, suggestions of a good one (to buy myself) next year.

Is anyone disappointed with their advent calendar?

FeelingSmurfy · 10/12/2016 22:15

Molly I have the moofree one and it tastes fine, no different to the rest of their chocolate

Tango I think we might have the same one!

"Got a gorgeous family nativity scene with little fabric characters with Velcro that come out of the pockets and stick on the stable to make up the scene"

Are the pockets red, & the background blue sky with a few gold stars? And the little baby Jesus wearing a tiny white sleep suit that comes off (if you try very hard with tiny sticky fingers!)...

If so, isn't it LOVELY?!

I got ours when DS was tiny, & it's still going strong now DS is almost 7 Xmas Smile. DS pounces on it when I got it out this year and was so excited to see it again... which was a lovely moment :)

Baby Jesus is wearing rather well worn grey cloth 'swaddling' due to him being DS's favourite each year ... including the year DS 'needed' baby Jesus to join him at every dinner time (memorably burying him in the spag bol then screaming when he came out red!), and then year DS kept posting him through a knot hole in the floorboards into the very dusty bare earth beneath!

This year is the first year DS ordered all the pockets so each day lines up with the story, as I usually did the same and must confess I find it rather satisfying to have them all lined up ready & waiting! This year there has been a contentious decision where the figure carrying the loaves is apparently one of the 'no room at the inn' innkeepers and he's taunting Mary & Joseph by showing off his yummy fresh cakes and then saying 'but nur nuh nerr nerrr' and whipping them away again!

I slipped a single Haribo into a pocket when he had been really lovely and kind one day last week, and he was SO excited... more so than getting sweets/choc/toys every day, so I'm glad I've managed to steer clear of the edible ones for another year, and save the excessive consumption for a bit later on this month Xmas Smile

I failed at parenting as I didn't get my children an advent calendar. However, I totally redeemed myself after realising our house has exactly 24 internal doors. So I bought larger chocolate bars in varying flavours, split them all up and put 3 chunks in an envelope. Each door now has an envelope attached to it, and every morning they run around the house trying to find that days treat!

Smurfy, I am dead jealous. Mine still stuck on day 3 because it hasn't appealed to me. Nearly made a dreadful mistake posting this coz autocorrect changed Smurfy to Smutty...ConfusedGrin

Oh, ffs- advent calendars for adults? What fresh hell is this?

EmeliaHerveyHenryFitzroy · 10/12/2016 23:44

No, no, BertrandRussell I never knew they existed and am getting once henceforth. Don't ruin it.

But mine won't have fence posts in it.

mummydawn07 · 10/12/2016 23:45

my other half got me the body shop one which he knew I wanted, so I was really happy when he did, I would of preferred the loccitane one or m&s one but hey prices and Christmas ( you know how it is ) I am so far pretty happt with mine apart from when I open a box and get a nail buffer or muslin face cloth... lol I would of preferred it to be filled with all make up or skincare products but I am appreciative none the less :)

BertrandRussell · 10/12/2016 23:55

More awful than I can say. Just sheer commercial exploitation. Sad

EmeliaHerveyHenryFitzroy · 10/12/2016 23:57

Yes, ''tis a bit, isn't it, bertrand?

ChestnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 11/12/2016 07:58

What is all the luxury? I have a free one I got sent from an art gallery, I get a little photo of art behind every door, it's fab. DD has a wooden one that I place a chocolate or sweet into. She is happy. Low expectations and outlay are the answer.

ClashCityRocker · 11/12/2016 12:48

24 internal doors?! Do you live in Buckingham palace? We've got six. I like your creativity though!

Rachie1986 · 11/12/2016 21:35

lastgirlontheleft reading boxes does have disadvantages though - I now know what I have for Christmas due to the boxes arriving with company names on!

Don't think I'd have it again x

Carneddai · 11/12/2016 22:29

I'm with bert

irregularegular · 12/12/2016 12:01

I had no idea it was so normal for adults to have advent calendars!

I've not had one since the (shared, picture) one we had at home. It would never have occurred to me. However I confess that I quite fancy buying a beautiful picture one for myself next year for nostalgic reasons. I fill a (shared) wooden one for my children, with either jigsaw pieces, lego, or jokes/puzzles and the occasional chocolate. I don't think they've been disapppointed - but they think some of the jokes are a bit lame.

SymphonyofShadows · 12/12/2016 12:59

I've got M&S and No7. M&S was winning at first but I've had some nice make up brushes in No7 since and I got a card for a colour match blusher the other day. Went in and collected it today, its the full size product so I am more than happy.

BertrandRussell · 12/12/2016 13:01

Symphony- why have you got two advent calendars?

SymphonyofShadows · 12/12/2016 13:03

One was a gift and I'd already got the other one.

QueenFuri · 12/12/2016 14:03

I've a galaxy one can't be disappointed with a mouthful of galaxy with your morning cuppa!!Chocolate

lionsleepstonight · 12/12/2016 22:44

DS totally underwhelmed by the wilko lego version, but loves the homemade one with a teeny tiny pokemon figure in each pocket....

Wandastartup · 13/12/2016 13:30

I made my DDs a fabric one each. Raided 1 Lindt calendar between 2 so half a chocolate. The other half have been bits and pieces like Christmas socks, hair bands, stencils, stamps or an instruction e.g. Make gingerbread, wear Christmas tights. They have been thrilled with them so far as was DH with his Lindt one. Not sure I can equal it next year as may be out of ideas!

mouldycheesefan · 13/12/2016 13:32

I have got Clarins. Bit disappointing some days, e.g gift tags? Other days much better. Have had 4 decent things fromit. Wouldn't buy again though.

EmGee · 13/12/2016 13:40

I'm with bert too. Kids have a chocolate one they share which an elderly relative sent. They are enjoying it as it came with a little book telling the Christmas story. So they read a little chapter before opening the door.

wheezles · 13/12/2016 23:36

Hate mine. Buying myself the Liberty one next year!

Benefit- crap. Stuff i'd never buy.

Yankee- crap. They don't smell at all...

M&S trolls chocolate one- crap. Looks cute but the chocolate is minging, so DS delightfully eats it every day for me!

wheezles · 13/12/2016 23:36

However DS is absolutely LOVING his Smiggle one (even though it's all shite!) and, same as every year, my wife love love loves her Lego Star Wars one.
