As I assume its steak pie!!!

What are you having and do you do a special meal on NYD?

We are lentil soup, steak pie and then ice cream. Same lunch on NYD for 40 years!

My mum used to always have a vienetta!

I'm Scottish and we do steak pie on Christmas Day. On New Year's Day we have a ham and a steamed salmon, both cold, with various salads and sides and then some very indulgent M&S puddings. That said, we all pile round to my auntie and uncle's house, so everyone brings something (side dish or pudding).

StoorieHoose · 06/12/2016 17:48

Is it not a law in Scotland that mums have to offer Vienetta on New Years Day? :) I love a Vienetta

Redglitter · 06/12/2016 17:48

Bit of a generalisation there OP Hmm

We don't have steak pie either despite being Scottish. New Year is normally a buffet dinner

SVJAA · 06/12/2016 17:50

Asda are doing a giant Viennetta for £1.50 just now Grin

Haudyerwheesht · 06/12/2016 18:04

I want a vienetta now

We don't have steak pie we basically have a roast dinner.

OvO · 06/12/2016 18:18

I'm betraying my Scottishness and not having steak pie! Xmas Shock

I'll be making venison stew, I've made it the last several years so now no one will let me change!

PaulAnkaTheDog · 06/12/2016 18:19

Redglitter a fairly decent generalisation if everyone I know is anything to go by. It's not like the op was being insulting. Hmm

Redglitter · 06/12/2016 18:27

Actually hardly anyone I know has steak pie now a days on New years so to say Scottish people need not reply because we're all supposedly having steak pie was an incorrect generalisation. So far everyone who's replied has said they're not having it

Shenanagins · 06/12/2016 18:28

Everyone I know is having it but ice cream surely you mean triffle?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 06/12/2016 18:42

Really something to get Hmm faced at though?

Redglitter · 06/12/2016 18:45

Shenanigans depends if the trifle is with or without jelly - that's a whole other can of worms Wink

Have to admit I had no idea you still got Vienetta going to have to hunt that down. That was always the 'special occasion' dessert in our house

Kirriemuir · 06/12/2016 19:01

My mum loved the mint one. It was her favourite dessert!

This is a lighthearted threat. Some just seem to have a poker up their arse.

Thank you to those who see it for what it is.

Lighthearted threat. Grin

Be happy. Or else.

notagiraffe · 06/12/2016 19:05

I like whole baked salmon with dill, lemon and fennel, served with new potatoes and salad or lots of green veg. Something healthy and refreshing after all that Christmas food.

But unless we have guests we're usually still eating up left over ham, beef or turkey.

Cheerybigbottom · 06/12/2016 19:08

I came here to say excuse me don't assume we're eating haggis because I hate haggi...oh yeah actually we are having steak pie Grin

Looking for pudding ideas though, I only like the biscuit vienetta and I haven't seen that for years.

OhFuds · 06/12/2016 19:09

I'm having deep fried Mars bars, washed down with irn-bru Xmas Grin

Kirriemuir · 06/12/2016 19:11

Ohfuds, that would be hangover breakfast surely!?

OP posts:
TimetohittheroadJack · 06/12/2016 19:14

Why would anyone NOT want to have steak pie. Homemade, with sausages, roast potatoes, a few vegetables (for show). If I'm ever of death row (hopefully unlikely), that's what I'm getting.

Redglitter · 06/12/2016 19:15

Out of interest I know deep fried Mars Bars are believed to be a staple part of our diet north of the border but has anyone actually tried one? Confused

StoorieHoose · 06/12/2016 19:20

We're having home made steak pie and Vienetta for pudding - steak pie is ace on New Years to help with the hangover

Twolittlejobbys · 06/12/2016 19:24

We always have a steak pie dinner about 10pm on Hogmanay to line out bellies before drinking! Thought everyone did? Xmas Grin

Matilda2013 · 06/12/2016 19:27

I tend to get two steak pie dinners Grin one with my family on the first and then with dps family on the second

Obviously very Scottish

TimetohittheroadJack · 06/12/2016 19:28

Deep fried mars bars are delicious, even Nigella has a reciepe for deep fried bountys. Think of a Chinese banana fritter batter, and once you open it up melted chocolate, caramel and nougat oozes out. What's not to like. Most chip shops don't do them as if they leak the whole vat of oil needs changed.

Chipsandonionrings · 06/12/2016 19:35

My mum is Scottish and we always had roast beef or roast lamb. Now we go out this new years day it's Caribbean food.

Of at home Its often Chinese home made it a home made curry as I am sick of roast meat and gravy by that point.

SauvignonBlanche · 06/12/2016 19:37

I want a steak pie NOW! Grin
