I can't think what I was reading at that age? Something preferably not boy related Wink. Something a bit classic. I think I was reading something like Brian Jacques 'Mossflower' but I may have been older? Or Michelle Migurian?

Have a look online at The Book People, lots of sets on there for a good price. Also available by age.

Do you know of she's an advanced reader? At that age I was reading several years above my age group and would have found "age appropriate" books very juvenile.

My dd loved One Dog and his Boy by Eva Ibbotson at that age.
One Dog and His Boy https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/1407124242/ref=cmswwrcppapi_T0rryb4XRVWE9

Myself, I enjoyed Journey to the River Sea by Ibbotson too (which I think would be age appropriate) if not a bit advanced.

Goth Girl by Chris Riddell is great too. Luscious as s gift as it's just beautifully illustrated with gothic foiling and detail all over the place.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 05/12/2016 08:10

Try Marianne Levy's books. Lovely for girls.

AgeingArtemis · 05/12/2016 15:46

I loved journey to the river sea!

The hobbit?

restinginmyaccount · 05/12/2016 15:50

Artemis Fowl?

QueenRefusenik · 05/12/2016 15:59

Anything by Diana Wynne Jones! Start with Charmed Life (v jealous of someone getting to read then all for the first time, sigh!)

Dd is about to turn 8 and loves goodnight mr Tom so your Michelle magorian idea would be a winner with us. She likes classics like Heidi, secret garden, little princess, the Laura ingalls wilder series and she's on the Anne of green gables series at the moment.
Some great more recent books with good female leads in too. The accidental pirates is one, the unlikely adventures of Mabel Jones. You could look at Katherine Rundell too. Depends where she is in understanding and enjoyment as well as reading ability. I liked the Brian Jaques as a child too, dd hasn't got into them yet, she's not all that into fantasy type stuff though, she prefers a lead character she can relate to.

sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2016 16:01

My 8yo DD loves Louis Sachar and Jaqueline Wilson, Catherine Cassidy and Judy Blume's fantastic younger (rather than teenage stuff). Things like Looking Glass Girl, Superfudge etc. Also she avidly read Helen Dunmore's Ingo series, but this was challenging enough not to be finished in just a few days! Dick King Smith also good.

foxychox · 05/12/2016 16:02

Mine loves anything by Jacqueline Wilson or Dick King Smith...

nocutsnobuttsnococonuts · 05/12/2016 16:06

My dd is 8 she recently enjoyed dolltopia - its a graphic novel so a bit different!

She's not a strong reader so can't recommend long ones she has read but I enjoyed at that age
Naughtiest school girl - Enid bylton
Harry potter
Famous five
Secret seven
Northern lights trilogy - Philip pullman

EverySongbirdSays · 05/12/2016 16:09

Anne Of Green Gables
Little Women
Back Home (Magorian)

Mybeautifullife1 · 05/12/2016 16:11

The chronicles of Narnia. Mine has just read the first two and loves them.

Casablanca78 · 05/12/2016 16:13

My 8.5 year old daughter reads loads!
Her current favourites are the wimpy kid series (there's a new one just out), the danger is everywhere series. And all the Roald Dahl books!

sleepwhenidie · 05/12/2016 16:40

nocuts Northern Lights is really advanced for an 8 year old?!

Flumplet · 05/12/2016 17:35

Narnia series or black beauty or something like that.

madgingermunchkin · 05/12/2016 17:53

The Missflower book by Brian Jacques you are thinking of is part of the Redwall series. Blooming brilliant books and I would definitely recommend.

I was also going to second the Northern Lights trilogy by Phillip Pullman, I'm pretty sure I was about 8 when I read that.

The Famous 5/Mallory Towers books, (anything by Enid Blyton really) , Heartland series. I also loved the Sheltie the Shetland pony books but they may be a tad young.

atticusclaw2 · 05/12/2016 17:59

Get her A boy Called Christmas (book 1) and The Girl who Saved Christmas (the second follow on book). They are both beautiful books and my DSs (11 and 9) loved A Boy Called Christmas. The Girl Who Saved Christmas is in their elf box to be read as a family on Christmas Eve.

atticusclaw2 · 05/12/2016 18:03

Northern Lights is too much for an 8 year old to read but my DSs loved the audiobook when DS2 was 8 and DS1 was 10. Clearly they enjoyed it as a story rather than on a deeper level understanding all the mortal sin stuff.

The subtle knife wasn't enjoyed quite so much and the Amber Spyglass has been started and abandoned a few times now and so needs to wait until they're a bit older.

You need to be careful with His Dark Materials anyway. If her family are religious they may well not like you buying it.

atticusclaw2 · 05/12/2016 18:04

She might like City of Ember?

pastapestoparmesan · 05/12/2016 18:18

I loved Noel Streatfeild at that age. Still do actually...

danTDM · 05/12/2016 18:25

David Walliams has a new book out, Telegraph gave him fantastic reviews. My DD loves David Walliams, she is a tiny bit younger though at just 8.
The boy in the dress made her cry! She loved it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/12/2016 18:26

The Little White Horse, and Linnets and Valerians, by Elizabeth Goudge.

Swallows and Amazons, by Arthur Ransome - it's the first in a series, so plenty more formher to read if she likes the first book.

The Land of Green Ginger by Noel Langley - it is a sequel to the Aladdin story, and is absolutely hilarious - it has a flying back garden, a magician who has accidentally turned himself into a button-nosed tortoise, villains called Rub Dub Ben Thud and Tin Tack Ping Fu, and a donkey who sits on a pin.

She might also like Terry Pratchett's Tiffany Aching books - The Wee Free Men, A Hat Full of Sky, Wintersmith, I Shall Wear Midnight and The Shepherd's Crown.

Lucydogz · 05/12/2016 18:28

Marianne Dreams by Catherine Store. Also The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge.

Lucydogz · 05/12/2016 18:30

sorry - Catherine Storr

Lucydogz · 05/12/2016 18:33

my goodness STDG, fancy choosing Elizabeth Goudge simultaneously. FWIW I think The Little White Horse is quite an odd book (reading it as an adult) but I LOVED it as a child - I still remember her wonderful description of what must be the best bedroom ever!
