Teenagers and Christmas stockings

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 20:42

If you have teenagers do you still do a Christmas stocking for them?
I'm struggling to think what I should put in the stockings this year to fill them - ages 13 and 15.
As I was struggling for ideas I decided not to do Christmas stockings and just do presents under the tree. DH is disappointed and thinks I am being mean spirited and should do Christmas stockings. He doesn't have time to go and buy the stuff as he is very busy with work at the moment. I have done 90% of the Christmas shopping which I don't mind at all as I have had the time but I really can't be arsed with boing stuff to fill a stockings and k think they are old enough for this tradition to stop now.
So I guess what I am asking is - am I being unreasonable for not wanting to do Christmas stockings (I know this is the Christmas page and not Aibu).

Sorry about the typos, hopefully it still makes some sense.

I'm 24, and my brother is 23, my parents still do Christmas stockings for us. Christmas wouldn't be the same without them!

ChippyMinton · 04/12/2016 20:49

Well mine are similar ages and they would be gutted if Santa didn't visit...

There are a few recent threads with great ideas for teens. Many are simple and easy to do, just up the novelty or fanciness factor of everyday stuff.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 20:49

See. I have never had one gin as my
Parents never did them. What do you get inside them as an adult?

My DC still love stockings. And I love doing them.

They'll get

Chocolates
Food treats (DS1 lovely coffee beans DS2 loves posh hot choc)
A tee shirt
Christmas socks
new water bottles for school
a graphic novel or paperback book
Christmassy bubble bath
good quality body spray
A DVD
A CD
A few bits and pieces to do with hobbies they have
a Lego figure

If I had girls I'd add bits of makeup to that. Teens often need small things and stockings are a good way of getting all that for them.

GreenGinger2 · 04/12/2016 20:49

Shock my 13 year olds would be devastated if I didn't do stockings. No boring items in ours.

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2016 20:50

My daughter is 19 and I still do one for her. I buy things like make up, underwear, a mug, perfume, costume jewellery, basically small things that fit in the stocking. I imagine I'll always do it for as long as her home at Xmas is with us, and I'll be sad when I have to stop. I just lay it outside her door on Xmas morning, so it's there when she gets up,

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 20:50

Probably worth adding that the 15 year old has significant special needs and zero interest in 99% of things. It has been really hard just finding him things to go under the tree.

Will you make a stocking for me notagiraffe? Sounds lovely.

We had them until we had both left home they are the best part of Christmas morning Xmas Grin
As teens (and adults Blush) we got a mix of practical things toothbrushes / pens, nice things bath bombs / shower gel and a couple of silly items eg yoyo or puzzle game. Generally filled out with chocolate, nuts and the obligatory orange.
It was nearly all stuff my parents could pick up with the weekly shop but it was a family tradition we loved.
My parents tried a few times to get out of it but db would always argue that Chilli had got a stocking at 16 20 25 etc... and I would argue it was unfair to do 1 and not the other. I am sure my poor parents would still be doing them now if we were still at home Xmas Grin

I had a stocking from my mum till I had my own kids!!! My 16 and 14 yr old currently have; fluffy socks, choc coins, make up, bubble bath, Costa card and stress balls In theirs. Got to get s jokey present yet ( maybe whoopie cushions!!!)

kath6144 · 04/12/2016 21:04

I think its a little bit unreasonable to stop at that age, just based on not knowing what to put in them! I still do them for DS19 & DD16.5. They love them, DH and I also do one for each other.

Generally they get socks, pants, smellies of all kinds, chocs & sweets, revision items (cards for doing notes, highlighters, coloured pens etc), toothbrush, toothpaste. Most of which you can buy in a supermarket/online. Add a satsuma. Some mini pringles or such.

You dont say whether they are boys or girls, but other ideas are a book, DVD, phone case, charging leads (always breaking in this house!), standalone chargers, makeup/jewellry for a girl. Hot choc items if they interested in that. Calendar if they'd use one, though I have decided against that this year. DS now at uni so he getting some food items and alcohol.

There are a number of threads on here with great ideas, one was a wind-up toy each that they can use for races on xmas morning!

GinPleaseOrTen · 04/12/2016 21:07

We always get an apple (one of the shiny, really juicy ones but the name escapes me just now), a satsuma, and a pound coin at the bottom. Then they're topped up with perfume/aftershave, chocs, clothes, cosmetics, games, useful bits and bobs, and our "main" present.

bigredfireengine · 04/12/2016 21:08

Age birth- 90 you get a stocking (well santa sack) here. Tree presents are from other family and friends. Everything from us got into the stocking.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 21:17

Yes, I do think am being a not unreasonable kath. But I am really struggling. Even food treats are really difficult as ds1 has multiple severe food allergies. His interests are so limited that it is pretty much books and food (and food is a problem as mentioned). I could fill it with socks and a toothbrush and underpants and a few small books but that seems so boring.

CocktailQueen · 04/12/2016 21:17

You're never ever too old for a Santa stocking!! I'm sorry you didn't have one when you were little, OP - would you dh do one for you now?? X

bigredfireengine · 04/12/2016 21:19

Onesie?
Soft toy?
Razor?

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2016 21:25

But the 13 year old doesn't have SN? I guess you have stuff that worked in others years for your eldest son so could go with that theme? I don't think it's the content more the concept that's important...

kath6144 · 04/12/2016 21:26

Op - why are socks, toothbrush etc boring? They are necessary items for life! Really anything is appreciated by my 2, the year it isn't is the last year I will do stockings!

I didnt see the post about your eldest have SN until I had posted, so maybe you are not unreasonable if he is v difficult to buy for?

But maybe Santa should bring you one this year? Smellies, nice food/drink items, really anything goes.

pklme · 04/12/2016 21:31

I pick things which show I know them, so favourite sweets and chocolate, socks with a cartoon character or Christmas theme. Santa hat, crackers. Puzzles. Crossword books. Special pens- scented or metallic or gel. Adultish colouring book. Game, tooth brush, soap, flannel, really loud boxers... Favourite drink- chocolate milk, or fruit cider for mine.

annandale · 04/12/2016 21:35

My mother needed to stop my stocking at 10 as we were boracic. We had a serious discussion about it. That year, she very kindly found things around the house and wrapped them up for me, so that I still had a stocking - it was almost as good tbh. The year after that, my sister did one for me as her Christmas present to me. After that, it stopped. I still slightly miss it and tbh I will do a stocking for ds while he lives at home and will probably infuriate my future D/SIL by turning up with a stocking 'the way he really likes it' years in the future I would say, try to keep going, could you not just do four nice things? Large pack of sweets or something like that, t shirt, socks, novelty charger or something?

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 21:38

I don't really want a stocking cocktail, I just assumed that people stopped doing them after a certain age (when kids stopped believing in Santa which was a long time ago for mine).
I have managed to fill stockings in previous years but ds1 now has about 1000 books so I am trying not to buy any more just to fill a stocking. I also didn't want to fill it with socks etc as he doesn't enjoy opening that type of stuff - not his fault as his SN means he either enjoys something or clearly doesn't.
Ds2 is an entitled brat who expects to have loads of presents and a brimming stocking full of fun and tasty stuff and I'm having trouble deciding that he deserves it.
Based on the consensus I will do stockings but smellies and smalls will be the main fillers.

For ds with SN I am thinking:
A magazine (more disposable than books).
A box of haribo (allergen free)
A free from gingerbread man.
A light up ball.
Socks.
Deodorant (all other toiletries are prescription only)
Toothbrush.

Will that fill a stocking?
