Teenagers and Christmas stockings

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 20:42

If you have teenagers do you still do a Christmas stocking for them?
I'm struggling to think what I should put in the stockings this year to fill them - ages 13 and 15.
As I was struggling for ideas I decided not to do Christmas stockings and just do presents under the tree. DH is disappointed and thinks I am being mean spirited and should do Christmas stockings. He doesn't have time to go and buy the stuff as he is very busy with work at the moment. I have done 90% of the Christmas shopping which I don't mind at all as I have had the time but I really can't be arsed with boing stuff to fill a stockings and k think they are old enough for this tradition to stop now.
So I guess what I am asking is - am I being unreasonable for not wanting to do Christmas stockings (I know this is the Christmas page and not Aibu).

Adults have stockings here also

You can order most stuff online or get nearby in supermarket

For a 13 year old boy I would add something like:
New book
Magazine
Some sweets/ chocolate
Something novelty he likes

What does 15 year old like? What food? DVD maybe? New hat/gloves? A game or small sensory thing

Ours are 14 and 18 and will still get a stocking. Dh and I do them for each other too and even the dog has one.

So far, for the dcs, I have personalised Nutella jars, chocolate oranges and a whole load of tat from Tiger.

My son is 11 and loves his Xmas stocking, he always comes into my room with it and is really excited to show me what he has. I would recommend Hawkins bazaar pre-filled Xmas stockings, have bought them the last 2 years, costs £20 and are great value for money. They have different age appropriate ones, and have one for 14 years +

Haffdonga · 04/12/2016 22:03

Father Christmas brings a stocking to everyone in our house until you are old enough to share your bed with a partner who can take over.

Our teen/adult ds's always contain pants and socks (but nicer ones than I would buy normally), a nice pen, chocolate, and other bits and bobs (torch, smellies, card games, screwdriver kit, mug, lottery scratchcard this year) and always always a satsuma, which they never eat

The main issue with teen/adult stockings is that they go to bed later than santa's own bedtime. A fair amount of suspension of disbelief is required.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 04/12/2016 22:06

Pre filled stockings sounds like my kind of thing shazz. The ds with SN has the developmental age of a pre school child so I will check if Hawkins do anything suitable.
Failing that I will do what lights said and get smaller stockings as ours are just too big.
I really think ds2 is so ungrateful and entitled that a small stocking with practical stuff is the way I want to go with him (he has got nice fun stuff for under the tree).
I think I will have to do some kind of stocking as we also have ds3 who is a year old and whilst he won't really care for a stocking this year I will want to do stockings for him during the Santa years (as I have always done for the teenagers) and i know deep down that I could never do one without the other(s).

thanks lights. Unfortunately I don't think ds2 behaviour is going to improve anytime soon. A few weeks after his birthday he complained that he didn't get enough presents and that he got less than usual. He got everything on his list and more. I think he was secretly hoping for an iPad or an iPhone 6! He has a tablet of his own and we have a family iPad. He has a smartphone and there is no way we were getting him an iPhone 6 when DH and I only have iPhone 5's. He is going away on an expensive school trip abroad next year (around £1000) but he still expects loads of presents .
I think part of my reluctance to do stockings really lies in the fact that ds1 is incredibly hard to buy for and ds2 is so ungrateful that I don't really feels he deserves it. However, based on opinions on here I think I should do stockings but will probably buy smaller ones which are easier to fill and buy mostly practical gifts for ds2 with a couple of food treats.

What about fiddle toys? We always have fiddle toys. And party poppers. Streamers.

WetNovemberDay · 05/12/2016 07:31

My teens stocking is usually full of "boring" ptactical stuff. It goes back to a time when money was tight so I used to buy stuff they needed anyway.
I admit they get toiletries and chic too which you can't add as standard to your sn ctren but here's a list if what else is going in this year:
Hairbrush/comb
Umbrella
Socks
Bed sock's
Pants
Gloves
Drawing pin's for bedroom walls/boards
Novelty post it notes
Pens/pencils for school
Fairy lights
Novelty flannel
Costa/Odeon gift card

Sixisthemagicnumber · 05/12/2016 07:34

We have bought some fiddle toys for ds1 (we do every year) but this year we bought them as part of a big sensory kit and it is one of the main presents for under the tree. I might get a couple more small fiddlies that can go in the stocking though.

We are definitely going to do stockings. DH and everyone on here has convinced me that it would be a mistake not to. I have decided to do a mix of practical stuff and food treats and a comic each.

So both stockings will look like:

Slipper Socks
Toothbrush
Underwear
Box of haribo
Marshmallows (most are allergen free)
Chocolate (can get some allergy free ones)
An appropriate comic.
Deodorant
And perhaps a couple of small fiddles for ds1 and some stationery for ds2.

I'm going to have to do one for ds3 (1 year old) too aren't I?

And I know that I will feel much happier on Christmas morning knowing that they have stockings and I haven't been the lazy grinch Xmas Grin but the thought of traipsing to the shops to buy stuff at this time of the year and then having to wrap it all (stocking stuff has to be wrapped in this house) when I already have a mountain of stuff to wrap is filling me with dread.

Buy most on Amazon and get delivered. Get food delivery online also to include any sweets/ chocolate / deodorant etc

GreenGinger2 · 05/12/2016 07:52

Watch they're not posted from China though. Takes ages. Paperchase had some nice bits and pieces as did John Lewis. I did an online order from both.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 05/12/2016 08:01

Yes, online might be the way to go. I can get the food bits with my weekly shopping. I don't do food shopping online because ds1 and ds3 both have a range of allergies so I have to meticulously check stuff as ingredients are always changing. But the rest I can probably get online. eBay is great for sensory stuff and fiddles.

I'm doing a stocking for my youngest who will be 1 just after Christmas, it's mostly full of stuff we need for her anyway though.

2 nice bodysuits
Miracle cup
New hat & gloves
Board book
Socks
Elc toybox figure
Chocolate buttons.

To be honest, I'm only doing it because dd1 would hate to see her little sister left out.

Sixisthemagicnumber · 05/12/2016 08:43

Ooh, just googled miracle cup and think in going to get one. Currently ds3 drinks from a free flowing beaker but he is always trying to drink from our glasses and the miracle cup seems like a good transition cup.

FYI ocado lists every ingredient in food if you ever want to order online

annandale · 05/12/2016 09:30

To be fair, we 'only' give ds two presents separately from the stocking - a main present under the tree, plus a goodnight present of a book (family tradition to get the children into bed). So I don't feel bad doing a stocking.
