Help wise mumsnetters,
What do I get a 3yr old who has lots and lots of toys. Her mum told me to get "anything princess or Barbie relates" and I just can't bring myself to (this is a little girl who told me she could't read a dinosaur book because it was for boys and she was a girl, girls have pink books Ffs). So what do I get her? I want something she will enjoy ...is it impossible?

A lottie doll? They won a positive role model toy award :)

ImYourMama · 04/12/2016 20:24

Why ask if you're going to ignore suggestions? There's nothing wrong with girls liking pink and barbie etc!

ShouldIBuyOrShouldIGo · 04/12/2016 20:24

Oooo lovely, I like the pirate lottie!

There's nothing wrong with girls liking pink and barbie etc!

There is if they're heavily conditioned to it.

Zog the dragon and Zog and the flying doctors by Julia Donaldson.

Also Lila Pirate book.

A labrador puppy?

desperatelyseekingcaffeine · 04/12/2016 22:43

There's a duplo book called a fairy tale with a prince, princess and dragon. One of those where you build the characters and props while you read the book. The prince is kind and caring, the princess is brave and strong. She builds the tower and bravely watches for the dragon. Nice gentle challenge of stereotypes without seeming to be ignoring her wishes. Also agree the zog books.

FlyingCat · 04/12/2016 22:45

I second the zig books - if she's conditioned to like pink and princesses then at least teach her that princesses can do/ be anything they like!

FlyingCat · 04/12/2016 22:45

Argh

I agree nothing wrong with liking pink in fact I could be accused of pushing DD into thinking the same. She regularly tells me toys for boys and those for girls. Ahem she has batman toys btw. However I love pink and she loves blue. I'm not sure where she picks it up from either school or the argos book but it hasn't stopped her from choosing both types of toy. Are you sure its the mother pushing in this case even though it does appear likely. Maybe a little old for her but what about those science dolls. The one with the car is amazing. You add water and its remote control with working lights and working steam 'exhaust' Or a tinkerbell doll or book. She was always a tomboy.

TheMortificadosDragon · 04/12/2016 23:22

Something princess related? Hm well, how about you show the unimaginative mother this and then you can get the child something like this? Grin

Well, maybe not but surely most kids like some variety?

attheendoftheday · 05/12/2016 00:46

I struggled with aligning my own feelings about gendered toys with finding a present kids will like.

We have Lottie dolls and they are great. Another option is a playmobil princess or fairy set. Yes, they are still very "pink" but they don't have ridiculous waists and have lots of bits to create a story with.

Otherwise, what about a craft set? Melissa and Doug do some fairy stamps or the My First Sticky Mosaics have a princess set, both are good.

Cagliostro · 05/12/2016 01:37

Oooh if you get her a lottie doll the superhero outfit for her is fab.

SatsukiKusakabe · 05/12/2016 07:39

What about one of the DC superhero girls dolls? My ds has got the little Batgirl one for his little sister.

We also have the superhero outfit for Lottie Grin Lottie will sparkle in it

Carneddai · 05/12/2016 07:48

mortific those toys are expensive!

AutumnalLeaves38 · 05/12/2016 08:16

I've had great success with this for friends' 3 and 4yr old daughters.

Would appeal to her, but is not overly 'girly' (in fact the 6yr old brother of one finds it a good laugh, too!).

Plus points: non-noisy, no batteries required, stimulates imaginative play...

waitingforsomething · 05/12/2016 08:20

What about the Duplo Creative Cakes or Creative Ice Creams set? Not directly princessy and certainly not barbie, but still 'pink' (although it shouldn't be). and a good toy which was well loved by DD on her 3rd birthday

liquidrevolution · 05/12/2016 08:29

Lottie dolls are ace. 2 year old dd is getting pirate lottie from santa.

They have just brought out a forest friend lottie who is a bit of a forest fairy with green and pinky purple tutu.

Also a copy of the ordinary princess by mm kaye.

Soubriquet · 05/12/2016 08:36

Tbh you should buy this girl something she would actually play with. Not something you would rather by because of your own morals.

It's not your child. You don't get to say that pink and princesses are not good enough

You run a big risk of the toy either being binned or not played with if you go outside the box
