I've got a team of 8 to buy for. Budget is about £20 per person. Would you prefer a bottle of Moet (which is normally £35, but has £10 off in Sainsburys and they're currently doing of 25% off if you buy six or more, so could get for within budget); or a gift card (is there anywhere doing good deals on gift vouchers?!); or something else??

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Wow, I pretty shocked at some of the statements on this thread. "I'd rather have nothing."Shock

Honestly OP I think you are really good to buy all your team a gift each from your own pocket. Wonderful generosity. I think you should stick with the Moët idea. It's a thoughtful treat and if they don't like it you have still given them something they can regift.

I wish my employer just supplied milk and mugs for the workplace.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 29/11/2016 09:19

Upanddown - there's nothing "generous" about giving a gift of alcohol to someone who can't drink for medical reasons while giving a voucher to someone who chooses not to drink for religious reasons.

That's actually quite hurtful.

blueskyinmarch · 29/11/2016 09:45

I imagine in a small team of 8 OP knows if people drink or not. My old boss used to give us all a bottle of wine at Christmas, red or white according the the preferences he knew we had. There were a few people in the team who didn’t drink and they got a box of chocolates.

Even if i didn’t drink i would be very grateful for a bottle of champagne as i could open it for guests at Christmas/New Year or take it when visiting people for dinner.

I think it is very ungrateful and rude to turn down any gift in an ungracious manner.

Enkopkaffetak · 29/11/2016 09:51

I just went next door and counted. We have 8 bottles of Moet or Veuve Clicquot

I find it a utterly dull and rather boring present.

DH and I both drink but neither of us particular enjoy fizzy stuff (I don't get the current obsession with Prosecco for example) With the Children all in 2ndary school I can't even gift them to the Christmas Fete bottle tambola So they just sit there.

Gift cards are impersonal yes but at least they allow for you to get something you would like.

Don't by Hotel Chocolat its awful IMO

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 29/11/2016 10:14

I don't think it's rude to turn down an item that has been given with no thought whatsoever if that same person can be bothered to put a bit more thought in to another member of the team.

If you can be bothered to think that someone might not want alcohol for religious reasons you should be bothering to think that anyone else might not want alcohol for other equally valid reasons.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 29/11/2016 10:37

Moët every time - whether people drink champagne normally or not, it is very recognisable as a special present.

2014newme · 29/11/2016 10:39

Moet

Gowgirl · 29/11/2016 10:47

I will be quite happy to dispose of unwanted gifts of champagne for you all, obviously it Is my humanitarian duty to help out mumsnetters who need to be rid of such an offensive present Wink.

MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 29/11/2016 11:28

it is very recognisable as a special present.

I disagree. I think it's very recognisable as an item given by someone who thinks of their own image ("look at me flashing the cash on champagne, no less") is more important.

And having worked around alcohol (yes I know...) I can also tell you that Moët, whatever the price, is the mass produced supermarket value range equivalent of champagne. Nothing special at all.

d270r0 · 29/11/2016 12:43

I'd also prefer amazon gift card

BikeRunSki · 29/11/2016 13:20

^it is very recognisable as a special present.

I couldn't agree more. It's thoughtless, and says more about the giver than the recipient.

I drink very little, and when I do it's red wine. The assumption that everyone loves fizz is wrong. But £20 to spend on me - priceless.

Bravas · 29/11/2016 13:25

I'd prefer an Amazon gift card and enjoy picking something as a treat for me. I rarely drink and don't like champagne, so it would be regifted to someone else.

ElizaDontlittle · 29/11/2016 13:28

Gift card I guess, it covers all preferences. Or maybe go for good quality chocolates - I don't drink (in recovery) or eat chocolate (carb sensitive) but wouldn't be offended, at all, by either.

TinyTear · 29/11/2016 13:33

i'd rather a gift card!

my work used to give john lewis vouchers but the last two years have given champagne or bottles of wine... i drink but we have enough at home and don't need more

flopsypopsymopsy · 29/11/2016 13:47

A gift card. I don't like Champagne!

The One For All gift card can be spent all over the place:-

EnidButton · 29/11/2016 14:19

Gift card.

I don't drink at all and DH very very occasionally drinks red wine or a beer, but really hardly ever. He gets given champagne and wine all the time through work and so we have a cupboard full of bottles. Everytime someone comes over I'm pushing bottles onto them as they leave. The thought is very much appreciated as none of the givers had to give anything but if it was a boss giving a Christmas present I'd find the assumption that everyone likes to drink, a bit annoying tbh.

LizzieMacQueen · 29/11/2016 15:09

If one of your colleagues doesn't drink then surely fairer to all to give them all a gift card.

I also have a stock of champagne in the cupboard that have been given as gifts - maybe I should regift some.

bimbobaggins · 29/11/2016 18:02

I said previously but surely a gift card for a supermarket would be ideal. Doesn't need to be anything fancy , Asda,Tesco,Sainsbury's and then the recipient could choose wether to buy alcohol. I would be over the moon with any gift really, apart from alcohol

phoenix1973 · 29/11/2016 18:03

Gift card. I don't like champagne

WeAllHaveWings · 29/11/2016 18:12

Out of those choices I'd go for a gift card,. Don't like fizz.

CurlyMango · 29/11/2016 18:48

I would love the Moët. I make enough money but would really enjoy the thought and would drink it. A gift card I would probably forget or regift.

IhatchedaSnorlax · 29/11/2016 19:04

I'm with Gowgirl, I'll happily accept re-gifted Moët!

snowgirl1 · 29/11/2016 21:26

Ahh, well let's hope that those of you who don't like fizz aren't my team members as the Moet was delivered by Sainsbury's tonight.

I know my team well enough to know that they all, apart from the muslim guy, drink. And if they don't like fizz, well it sounds like there are enough people out there that would be willing to receive re-gifted champagne!

Gift Card every time

bigredfireengine · 29/11/2016 21:31

I also went with Moet for mine. the woman in the queue behind me said- can I come to your party? I said that they were for my staff and she said- can I come and work for you.

So Moet wins here Grin
