Do you use Christmas wrapping paper you still have from last year?

Year after year I buy nice stuff from paper chase or wherever. I still have some left over from last year. I've never reused it before - should / do you always buy new stuff?

I have a big box of wrapping paper, many bought and partly used rolls, some unused due to buying a pack of 3. I also have good used bits which have had the sticky tape cut off and have been ironed and packed away. I have plenty to enable me to co-ordinate for the few gifts we give.

Over the years there have become fewer gifts so hardly need any at all, and I have to stop myself buying it. I was brought up to not waste anything, money was tight. Now there is recycling, so the tatty bits go in the bin.

My mother used to quietly retrieve wrapping paper and reuse it. It was lovely to see it again!

Gingernaut · 14/11/2016 14:09

I not only use last year's paper, I look out for wrapping paper in the New Year sales that could be used all year round.

Stripes - yes. Plain - yes. Spots - yes

Reindeer, robins, Santas, anything snow related and Merry Xmas/Christmas messages - no.

Good for birthdays, weddings (silver or gold), christenings, house warmings and wedding anniversaries.

A couple of rolls for the year and one for next Chrimbo.

LaBrujita · 14/11/2016 14:14

What's the alternative, throwing it out? Good grief. How wasteful. And because, what, blue isn't your 'in' colour this year?

Jumpmom1 · 14/11/2016 14:15

Of course not! What if the person recognises the paper from the year before! I couldn't handle them know I have reused wrapping paper ;) Grin

CarrotVan · 14/11/2016 14:21

I use it or donate it. There are lots of places that do gift drives for low income families, people in shelters, care leavers etc that need wrapping paper and tags.

Also my work does a volunteer run gift wrap service where you bring in your gifts to be wrapped for a charity donation and they always want leftover gift wrap, tags, bows etc.

If you have leftovers from previous years maybe you could think about a gift wrap service for donations. Might also help with the Twitch

I've got a little stash of wrapping paper from gifts I received last year that I'll be reusing this year Blush
I'll be saving myself an entire £2, and feel particularly tight because of it

bebawbabbity · 14/11/2016 14:29

I also cut up last year's cards to use as tags (when I have the time). Haven't managed to give a reused tag to the person who gave the card. Yet...

Microwaste · 14/11/2016 14:58

letmesleep I do keep really pretty papers, but don't want to reuse those, I need to think of a use for them!
Hobbycraft have large papier-mâché cones which you can decoupage with pretty paper to make Christmas trees, they are only £2 I bought three

Buzzardbird · 14/11/2016 15:00

We are supposed to be saving this planet for our children.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 14/11/2016 15:09

I use up whatever paper I have left over & then buy a few new rolls too.

My DM used to buy fresh each year - but not throw out any of the leftovers from previous years. After she died & the time came to clear her house out, my sisters & I each took a bag full home with us to use - some of it quite vintage!

arrrrghhwinehelpswithteens · 14/11/2016 15:28

I use up the rolls that I have. I used to buy new every year until I realised how many part used rolls I had, so until they're gone I won't buy any more. The only caveat is the children's paper as I have half a roll of Frozen and about two of pink from when DD was younger. They will go to a friend with younger girls.

I love a theme under the tree but as I use baubles or make the tags each year I've stopped caring so much about matching paper.

arrrrghhwinehelpswithteens · 14/11/2016 15:30

oh and I reuse gift bags. Well known for it in the family!

RussetGusset · 14/11/2016 16:22

Yes but it annoys me. Dh bought a huge pack of wrapping paper from Costco 9 years ago. We have about a 1/3 left. It's double sided so can be used for any occasion. I'm bored of it but dh would have a right hissy fit if I binned or gave it away. He uses it as a talking point every year. :o

MackerelOfFact · 14/11/2016 16:40

LisaMed1 50 rolls of wrapping paper and 700 Christmas cards?! How big is your frigging house?! Grin You could open a shop!

JigokuShojou · 14/11/2016 17:33

I've become a fan of furoshiki; wrapping gifts in fabric, with ribbon or hemp rope if needed.

JigokuShojou · 14/11/2016 17:34

Pardon, that should be hemp string.

cheminotte · 14/11/2016 17:36

It's not left over so much as bought in January when it's cheap and kept till the following December.

JigokuShojou · 14/11/2016 17:36

I wrapped wedding and birthday gifts with fabric so far this year. It's a stash-buster.

MrsHathaway · 14/11/2016 17:41

I use up unused wrap and cards the following year, yes - although with cards that would be chiefly to new recipients to make sure Grandma didn't get the same card two years running.

I buy paper in the post-Christmas sales, typically 20-50p a roll. I also buy ribbon small baubles and other tree decorations with which to embellish the wrapping - did gift wrapping in an old job and can't get out of the habit. Wasted on children obvs but all adult presents.

Like pps I cut up cards after Twelfth Night for crafting the next year. We take down our stylish dining room picture (dinghies on a lake) and put up a collage the DC create new every year from the last year's cards. Any others will be used as tags. I was gutted to need to buy tags last year as we'd given loads of small presents which each needed labelling.

I don't reuse paper that has been on a present, though. Too imperfect Blush

MrsHathaway · 14/11/2016 17:42

Should add: paper is always red/white/silver so I can buy anything in that colour scheme and it all goes together. Anyone getting more than one present gets them in different but complementary paper, eg one plain red and one red and white stripes. Matching ribbons etc - and of course the tiny bauble dangling from the ribbon.

Clickclickclick · 14/11/2016 19:33

I never normally have any left, and if I do, it's only a small amount so I stick it in the recycling. I wouldn't keep it all year because I hate having clutter.

Jizzonmyface · 14/11/2016 19:37

I use mine all year Shock it just gets ripped off anyway. Although I do try to buy stuff that's not overly Christmassy, like plain gold or silver or sparkly

magratvonlipwig · 14/11/2016 21:44

Why would you not use it.?
It goes in the loft with the tree, and with the half price rolls ive grabbed in the sales.

I cant remember what paper was on any of the gifts i received last year and i bet everyone im wrapping for cant either!

EmsyApples · 15/11/2016 00:09

I'm one of those people that buys wrapping paper/bags/tags/tat in the january sales.... And everyone gets the same! XD Usually something silly and cartoony. The men in the family usually have a good laugh at being presented with bright pink penguin paper or grinning sprouts, and the kids don't care.

And I keep whatever leftovers I have from last year to use too. But its usually not a lot, got just about enough for secret santa prezzies for work this year.
