Df wants 2 roasts?

So I'm hosting xmas this year for 8/9 people to celebrate ds first xmas. Having asked for advice earlier I'm going to order via m&s (have you seen the present cake!!!)
I was telling my df that I was going to order a plain turkey crown and stuffing as a side incase some people don't like stuffing. He says, what about the beef roast. I was like Confused? The turkey crown serves 8-10 why the hell would I order another roast? Is this a thing? Also, I told him I only have a single oven how would I cook it, apparently they will cook it and bring it over 🤔 So much for me hosting, seeing as my menu is not suitable. Grrr!

We're a two-roast family here. For us (2 adults, 3 young kids), I do a gammon joint boiled on Christmas Eve, then finished in the oven with a turkey crown cooked on the day. Means I barely have to cook for about a week after Christmas Day.

AdoraBell - try Nigella's ham in cola. It's really easy and everyone in my family loves it.

ChangedDaily · 02/11/2016 17:02

We do Nigella's ham in Coca Cola on Xmas eve so people have the choice of ham or turkey sandwiches (or, who am I kidding, both) on Boxing Day. Leftover turkey is the highlight of Christmas for me.

Adora - I use Delia's recipe from her very first cookbook - The Complete Cookery Course and it is Sugar Glazed Gammon -(the one online seems to be slightly different) - it works perfectly every time. ( My butcher goes hmph when I ask for gammon -its called ham - gammon is a slice/chop but same meat :) )

Thisjustinno · 02/11/2016 17:10

We've always had two. Goose and rib of beef. Means there are leftovers for boxing day lunch.

Penfold007 · 02/11/2016 17:19

As many PPs have said above a turkey crown may not go very far. As dad has offered to buy, cook and deliver the beef I'd graciously accept his offer. We tend to have a turkey and a ham as my family love Boxing Day left overs and Christmas sandwiches.

Another vote for nigellas Coke ham here - I cook it Xmas eve and have it for tea with egg and chips (chip shop if we've been visiting/ Panto) then serve with turkey on Xmas day 😊

MrsMontgomerySmythe · 02/11/2016 17:23

I do 2. Turkey or a really roast chicken plus a gammon or ham which we pop in tropical fruit juice in the slow cooker.

Costacoffeeplease · 02/11/2016 17:51

Always two roasts her at Christmas (plus ham, so three really) then have it cold/freeze it etc

Popsicle789 · 02/11/2016 17:57

Maybe it's one of his Christmas traditions? The decadence of two meats on offer.
Maybe buy a beef joint on this occasion if only to make his day

Popsicle789 · 02/11/2016 17:59

I always do loads of sausages wrapped in bacon and a selection of stuffings to bulk things outa bit... and to be honest, I always go bigger so we have plenty of leftovers

TataEs · 02/11/2016 18:00

if it's just us (me dh and 2 young kids) i do chicken /gasp the sacrilege! however my mum, dad and grandparents are 3 meat people. turkey, chicken (for me mainly - turkey is rank imo) and ham. my nan does 2 meats if you just pop over for a snack tho.... so her standards are high!

Vixxfacee · 02/11/2016 18:01

We have chicken, lamb, Turkey and salmon.

timeforachangeithink · 02/11/2016 18:01

We always have at least two, sometimes 3. If I'm hosting we do chicken (none of us like turkey much), beef and gammon.

lapsedorienteerer · 02/11/2016 18:03

Shock at two roasts, why (don't answer, it's a rhetorical question)?

HellsBellsnBucketsofBlood · 02/11/2016 18:04

This is all very odd to me. I've never known anyone who does two different roasts.

We just do one meat (duck this year I think) with lots of veg and some pigs in blankets/devils on horseback.

But if you're hosting the hordes, I'd probably take him up on the offer to bring a second meat so as to ensure there's plenty to go around.

yomellamoHelly · 02/11/2016 18:09

Am amazed.

We always have just the one and there's always shed-loads left.

Think shops ideas on quantities are always over-inflated going on the size of the birds dh comes home with insisting they're the one we need. (Find leftovers really depressing.)

Tartle · 02/11/2016 18:19

Nigella recipe in ginger ale from her Christmas book AdoraBell. Always gets rave reviews and smells amazing!

MTWTFSS · 02/11/2016 20:48

I'm making roast chicken and roast beef.

GipsyDanger · 02/11/2016 20:55

Such debate! It's excellent. As for those asking we alternated between my parents, my aunt and my Nana's houses for xmas growing up so we never had a "tradition" apart from icky trifle (boak!) then I moved out and alternate between my parents and Pil and a couple of my own thrown in. But this is the first time I've hosted everyone!

Gipsy your nana sounds like mine...

Only 'signature' dish was (probably still is but I take her out for meals now Grin) a huge trifle made with the jacket jelly, Birdseye custard, a mountain of squirty cream and an entire packet of hundreds and thousands dumped on top with those little green Angelica things placed artfully around the edge.

Even she proudly called it 'gunge'.
