We started an Xmas tradition a couple of years ago where we buy a new Xmas film and snuggle up together to watch it.

We first watched Arthur Christmas and then last year was Elf. They loved them but particularly elf. (They are 5and 7)

Any recommendations for this year?

It's not a Christmas film but we seem to watch it at Christmas. The gruffolo and stick man.

SushiRocks · 06/10/2016 06:59

We always watch Polar Express on Christmas eve and a televised recording of the nutcracker. Home Alone movies normally feature as well Grin

Nativity is brill and deck the halls for older kids

flapjackfairy · 06/10/2016 08:44

Ooh but best of all...muppet christmas carol

Middleoftheroad · 08/10/2016 11:34

This year I am going to try Planes, Trains and Automobiles with DTS (10).

NinjaLeprechaun · 09/10/2016 05:21

"How can you hate Elf?!"
Because my daughter was obsessed with it, and watched it several times a day for an entire year. It might work as a once a year novelty viewing, but it doesn't hold up beyond that. Even she won't watch it anymore, not even for the sake of nostalgia.
Also because I think Will Farrel (sp?) is kind of creepy, doubly so as a giant elf.

I second the recommendation for A Christmas Story. Also, It's A Wonderful Life.

Box of Delights, though it's hard to find. The special effects are pretty naff, but the story-telling is great!

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2016 05:52

The Muppet Christmas Carol!

And an obscure classic with Drew Barrymore as a dog who mishears a certain song and thinks that she is "Olive the other reindeer". Music by R.E.M. and penguins. We watch it in July as well.

JasperDamerel · 09/10/2016 08:03

I read the book of The Box of Delights (and also The Dark is Rising) for bedtime stories, and gave the twinkly theme music on Spotify to listen to beforehand. I loved the TV series so much, and was quite disappointed to see how badly the effects had stood the test of time.

Willy wonka and the chocolate factory. Always on at Christmas since I was a child. We love it here. It'll be especially poignant this year as gene wilder is with us no more.

lizzieoak · 09/10/2016 14:20

It's a shame about the special effects, because just a few years later and they would have been amazing. And yes to Susan Cooper's books!! Very atmospheric & spooky & wintery.

Home Alone 1 and 2
Elf
A Christmas Story
National Lampoon Christmas Vacation
A Charlie Brown Christmas
Shrek Christmas Movie
It's about Thanksgiving, but Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a funny 'home for the holidays' movie that we enjoy.

I love 'The Dead', starring Anjelica Huston but it's not funny. If I get a few hours to myself I watch it curled up on the couch wrapped in a blanket with a glass or three of wine. Christmas provides the backdrop.

Many thanks to Strikingclock for the Dutch film recommendation.

I can't stand Elf, it's just weird and embarassing to watch.

We watch Arthur Christmas, Rise of the Guardians, Snowman, SM & Snowdog, Polar Express, Shrek Christmas.

gemdrop84 · 10/10/2016 07:38

Santa Claus The Movie
Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
The Grinch
Elf
Small One, Disney short about a donkey.
It's not a film but we watch Merry Christmas Mr Bean, dc are always giggling at that one!

liquidrevolution · 10/10/2016 12:16

Buddy the animated musical version of elf. Its shorter and funnier than the film plus lots of singing.

DD loves this and made me watch it last week

charlybs · 10/10/2016 14:41

Muppets Christmas Carol! Brilliant for kids and adults

Voteforpedr0 · 10/10/2016 21:55

Elf is excellent as is Tim Allens the Santa clause also miracle on 34th Street, but I put them in my tempting father Christmas doubt stage (questioning the Fc/santa stage) Jingle All The Way is a big no no for that reason . My personal grown up favorites are it's a wonderful life and National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 13/10/2016 08:53

It's a wonderful life! I couldn't remember the name of it, so glad someone put it on Grin
Definitely go over my kids heads for next few years but one for me to enjoy Grin

wonderingsoul · 13/10/2016 10:25

Die hard movies.... ok not christmassy but they are allways on at christmas and every year growing up we watched it.
Therea a few but just cant seem tonrember them.

BathshebaDarkstone · 13/10/2016 10:27

The Nightmare Before Christmas.

jmszel · 13/10/2016 12:47

My Husband and step daughters favorite is the littlest light on the Christmas tree. Mine is Muppets Christmas Carol

graphista · 14/10/2016 09:23

My daughter is older so...

Elf - worth watching for Zooey Deschanel alone!
Deck the halls
Jingle all the way
Planes trains and automobiles (though it makes me cry)
Die hard 1&2
Scrooged
Gremlins

My personal favourite - the family man (Nicholas cage & Téa Leoni)

HandbagCrazy · 17/10/2016 11:12

Coming on to this thread late to say thank you!

I don't have dc so don't really find new festive films and stick to my trusty ones (Home Alone 1&2, Muppets Christmas Carol, The Santa Claus (Tim Allen) and Miracle on 34th Street).
Thanks to this thread I'm settling down to Fred Claus. I'm only half an hour in but I love it already Xmas Smile

dementedma · 18/10/2016 19:50

The Grinch is the big family favourite here.
Dcs are 25, 23 and 14 and they still love it.

oldlaundbooth · 18/10/2016 20:01

Loving these!

Great ideas 🎄
