We started an Xmas tradition a couple of years ago where we buy a new Xmas film and snuggle up together to watch it.

We first watched Arthur Christmas and then last year was Elf. They loved them but particularly elf. (They are 5and 7)

Any recommendations for this year?

Raymond Briggs Father Christmas is one of their faves. And mine. I could cry with joy at their little faces when they watch it!

They also like
The Snowman
The Snowman and the Snow Dog
Rise of the Guardians
The Grinch
The Santa Clause
Miracle on 34th Street
Santa Claus the movie
The Polar Express
The older ones like White Christmas too!

Muppet christmas carol

Mikeys twice upon a Christmas

An unusual one ...

...Het Paard van Sinterklaas /St Nicolas's horse

it's a Dutch film but I think you can get it with Eng subtitles (it's fairly easily understood without subtitles though)

Very natural, non-sentimental but lovely about a Chinese girl living in Belgium who believes that, if she is good, St Nicolas (celebrated on 6th Dec in parts of N. Europe) will bring her whatever she wants ie a horse. Really lovely film.

Oh and once all the prep has been done, we always watch Tom & Jerry "The night before Christmas" on Christmas eve too without fail!

AmberNectarine · 05/10/2016 12:41

Muppet Christmas carol or home alone 2

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 05/10/2016 12:46

I really didn't like Polar Express. Found it a bit creepy I don't know why Confused
Love miracle on 34th street, elf also. Home alone is also fab Grin

Middleoftheroad · 05/10/2016 12:48

Home Alone 1&2 win hands down!
We also enjoy
Elf
The Santa Claus
The Grinch etc

They're 10 now but used to love The Polar Express, Mickey's One Upon a Xmas and The Snowman.

JesusDontWantMeForASunbeam · 05/10/2016 12:52

The Polar Express creeps me out. I just don't get it.

We've got Miracle on 34th street for this year as DP hates Elf Angry

Jellyshoeshurtmyfeet · 05/10/2016 12:53

Our favourites are A Christmas Story and Jingle All the Way 😊

Tuiles · 05/10/2016 12:56

We always watch Home Alone.
And now Arthur Christmas too.

Kids love sitting down with Xmas lights on and popcorn.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 05/10/2016 14:14

I'm really glad it's not just me Jesus. I've only ever heard positive things about it before but I won't be volunteering it to the DC.

RueDeDay · 05/10/2016 18:38

ShockShock How can you hate Elf?! ShockShock

sonlypuppyfat · 05/10/2016 18:50

Who on earth can hate Elf!

ShesAStar · 05/10/2016 18:50

Tom and Jerry's version of The Nutcracker, my DC have watched it so many times we're on our 3rd copy! Luckily it's only about £3.00 from Amazon. The soundtrack is the classic Nutcracker music so really nice to have on in the background.

JesusDontWantMeForASunbeam · 05/10/2016 19:37

I know he's a dick. I thought he was winding me up because I love Elf. So I put it on. Not one smile was cracked by him.

Chocolatecake12 · 05/10/2016 19:49

Jack frost - I love that film, so sad! Not a great one for little kids tho!

mamalovesmojitos · 05/10/2016 19:57

Home Alone 1 and 2, every time!

NotAMammy · 05/10/2016 20:05

I'm pretty sure it's the animation on Polar Express that's so creepy. It's in the uncanny valley or whatever it's called.
Original Miracle on 34th St IS Christmas for me
The first two Home Alone's are fun.
The Snowman/The Snowdog (a gorgeous concert hall near us does a showing of the Snowman with live orchestra every year, it's one of my dreams to go see it)
The Muppet Christmas Carol
Arthur Christmas

I buy myself a dvd every year and mix up the family ones with old school classics like Holiday Inn. Probably not as much fun for kids, unless they lurve Bing Crosbie or dance and song numbers!

starburst1979 · 05/10/2016 20:06

olive the other reindeer is the fave in this house...it's our Xmas eve tradition Smile

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/10/2016 20:43

Nativity (the first one)
Nativity 2 at a pinch

DH likes Christmas with the Cranks (because he's a huge fan of Jamie Leigh Curtis) it is funny though

JasperDamerel · 05/10/2016 21:40

Nativity and The Greatest Store in the World are the only films that everyone likes. Also, the Snowman (and the snow dog).

Ladymoods · 05/10/2016 22:25

We went to see Get Santa last year and it was completely brilliant, we all loved it.

Watched The Snowman with dd when she was two, and she was deeply upset by the ending. It was another year before she could articulate that in the final scene, the boy apparently melts (he falls to his knees in the snow) but when she said if I could see how it does actually look that way.
So yeah, I traumatised my child with a Christmas horror movie Confused
