I set my alarm for six and when it went off DH said it was far too early "we'll go later". Knowing that would be a mistake I left him snoring and got there to find the car park already full. Thank goodness that's out of the way! Has everyone else done their main shop/had their deliveries?

I went to Morrisons (yuk) at 4.30 today and it was very quiet. A friend went earlier and the said you couldn't shop because the queues filled the aisles.

I only went for essentials, bread, milk, butter, Baileys!

themoon66 · 23/12/2006 21:11

And why the 'yeuk' comment about Morrisons?? [folded arms and grim expression emoticon in defence of lovely Morrisons]

MrsSpoon · 23/12/2006 21:15

I think I've been in every supermarket in the area over the last few days.

Went to Tesco at about 1pm on Friday and it wasn't too bad. They were out of Parsnips and Maple Syrup. Sent DH and DSs to look for Maple Syrup and they asked an assistant who I then overheard having a rant to a colleague about Nigella telling everyone to do something with Maple Syrup and everyone asking for it now, lots of "Flaming Nigella" statements. A few aisles on I overheard some more staff talking about the run on fat Coke they had because Nigella was "telling them all to put it it something and perhaps next year Nigella could issue them with a list of all her must have ingredients so they could stock the shop". Spent £140 , I bought no meat at all.

Then I went to ASDA at about 6pm to try to get the Parnsips and Maple Syrup, none, spent another £25!

DH went to a different ASDA store this morning and hurrah got Parsnips and Maple Syrup.

I went to Aldi as I realised we were running out of dishwasher tablets.

Then ended up in Iceland for mayonnaise and more milk.

I do not want to end up in a shop again tomorrow!!!

Our Morrisons is grim let me tell you! Well, we have two, one is grim, one isn't but the grim one is nearest. Moon - Are you seriously offended that I said yuk? LOL

rydercup · 23/12/2006 22:35

my mum works in a tesco and informed me that the police had to be called to the M&S opposite yesterday due to fights breaking out over food....unbelievable!! And things are only shut for 2 days!!!!

MrsSpoon · 23/12/2006 22:40

ROFL @ the Police being called to M&S!

I wouldn't have started a fight over the Maple Syrup, DH did inform the girl at Tesco that we buy Maple Syrup every week. I did however feel a bit guilty when he said that he took the last two bottles off the shelf in ASDA and there were two other shoppers who looked as if they were heading for them as well, but thankfully no fight broke out.

multitasker · 23/12/2006 22:49

Am I missing something with the maple syrup???

myrrhthamoo · 23/12/2006 22:53

Pmsl @ Nigella causing shops to run out of maple syrup and full fat coke. I remember that happening with a chocolate torte Delia did one year on some TV programme - it needed liquid glucose, iirc, which you could only get from the dusty shelves of teeny independent chemist's - who had never had such a stampede of customers

My Tesco delivery came on Friday - the man hovered nervously a few steps from the door, waving the sheet at me and saying "there are a few substitutions...it's not as bad as it looks" and only came nearer when I smiled cheerfully and said "well... I was expecting a few."

Sent dh to M&S to pick up the turkey (pre-ordered) this morning and he said it was madness. Jammed with pensioners trying to break each others' ankles with shopping trolleys. And I made him go to Sainsbury's too for red cabbage (not sure which part of "RED NOT WHITE PLEASE!" in the note for 'organic cabbage: red or white' the Tesco packer didn't understand but, hey ho...)

Done now. If there's anything we don't have (brandy cream for example - I gave the substituted rum and raisin back at the thought of raisins in cream) we will do without (or extemporise )

bournemouthbaublebabe · 23/12/2006 23:03

Can't believe there has been a maple syrup stampede - I have literally run out this morning of Rowses and love it on my porridge, now what the hell am I going to do!

I have most of a bottle of Rowses in my cupboard...shall we start the bidding at, say, £50

bournemouthbaublebabe · 23/12/2006 23:13

Oh moo, go on, open the bottle, give us a sniff ... drooooool.

wickedwinterwitch · 23/12/2006 23:43

lol at the thought of stampedes in dusty old chemists, ha ha ha. Can you IMAGINE what liquid glucose must do to you?

Issymum · 24/12/2006 11:47

Oh! Has Nigella being doing something sophisticated with maple syrup? I was just looking for some to put on our pancakes and was a tad surprised to find that it was all sold out.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 24/12/2006 14:15

There was a queue of people with trollies outside Waitrose yesterday morning. Many of them headed straight for the fruit and vegetables sections of the store.

Was appalled to discover that Somerfield supermarkets will be open on Boxing Day and 1st January. How long before the others follow suit?.

LunarSeasonsGreetings · 24/12/2006 14:31

Our Tesco was empty today at 11 am

multitasker · 24/12/2006 20:34

Was far too busy to watch Nigella but DH watched it - when I quized him on what exactly she was making he looked at me like I was mad - what - I was meant to concentrate on her cooking......
No maple syrup for me - might as well admit defeat now

tribpot · 24/12/2006 20:57

My mum's just told me two women were arrested in Sainsburys in Derby yesterday, fighting over the last jar (packet?) of bread sauce. (I dunno how bread sauce comes as we would never eat it).

MrsSpoon · 25/12/2006 22:13

The maple syrup was for the parsnips, it was quite nice, however I have complete sugar overload now, pancakes and maple syrup for breakfast, choccies, wine and baileys during the day too.

MerlinsBeard · 25/12/2006 22:17

attilla, why appaled? all my local shops are open boxing day, its usualy sunday trading hours though

BexieID · 26/12/2006 11:19

Saturday, I worked in Tesco 7:30-2 (very busy between 7:30-1 and they had no extra staff in to help pack bags), and then I went shopping in Morrisons where it was nice and quiet. Thank goodness for that as I was well knackered.
