When do you take your tree/decs down?

...seeing as there's always a 'when do you put them up' thread Xmas Grin

I'll be taking mine down on twelfth night not that I will want to They've been up since the last Friday in November, the 27th I think. Over a month. The house will look so rubbish without them Xmas Sad My DM used to take everything down on Boxing Day - she'd get up at 6am and do it while we were all asleep, and we'd wake up to a bare house. That might be why I like to keep mine up for so long!

They'll come down on 6th January. They only went up on 18th December, so I like to keep them up until then.

SurferJet · 28/12/2015 18:07

New Year's Day.

onemouseplace · 28/12/2015 18:07

Twelfth Night - but looking at the collection days we'll actually have to take it down the evening of the 4th to be out on the 5th this year.

alteredimages · 28/12/2015 18:08

8th of january. Would ordinarily be 12th night, but Christmas is celebrated on january 7th here so it seems a bit churlish to take the tree down right before others celebrate.

WhoisLucasHood · 28/12/2015 18:11

Before NY, I like a clear house for the new year.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/12/2015 18:20

Epiphany or Twelfth Night. When the Three Wise Men arrived.

It's a big thing where I live, in fact the school holidays are usually 23rd December to 6th January and the kids get yet more sweets (or coal) from the Befana (a sort of benevolent Babushka) to round off the celebrations with a bang rather than a whimper.

Having said that I've been to a couple of crazy Twelfth Night Balls in Devon. Don't ask me why just in Devon...

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 28/12/2015 18:28

Boxing Day.

I'm not into the month long Christmas thing. Tree goes up around the 19th/20th and comes down on the 26th. A week of Christmas is plenty.

CantSee4Looking · 28/12/2015 18:34

the one's in ds' room will come down tomo. Mine and the rest of the house will be the sunday 3rd so that the house is ready for return to school and its crazy timetabling thanks ds of after school activities.

Fallstar · 28/12/2015 18:34

New Year's day or the weekend after. The tree goes up the weekend before Christmas (so the 20th this year). Two weeks is plenty long enough to have a Christmas tree up imo. We don't put up any other decs, other than cards. Personally, I enjoy the brevity!

dementedpixie · 28/12/2015 18:38

Took the tree down today to create space. Have left the lights in the windows and the gutter lights up though

Flossieflower01 · 28/12/2015 18:38

Tree and most of the decorations came down today. Cards from family are still up and my 5ft lit twiggy thing is where the Christmas tree was so there's still a bit of sparkly light but without the clutter! Also had a big de clutter of Dds bedroom today and the cleaner is coming tomorrow so it'll be calm and tidy before the new year!

hollyisalovelyname · 28/12/2015 18:51

I wait till after the 6th of January, known in Ireland as Little Christmas or Nollag na mBán ( Womens Christmas).
It is traditionally the Feast of the Epiphany ( the visit of the Three Wise Men to the stable in Bethlehem).
Other countries consider it a bigger celebration than Christmas.
I don't put my tree up til around the 17th of December though.
I hate the way Christmas has become commercialised.
I can't believe somebody takes down their tree on Boxing Day ( 26 th is St. Stephen's Day here in Ireland).
Faints.

hollyisalovelyname · 28/12/2015 18:54

What's twelfth night?
The Epiphany?

readyforno2 · 28/12/2015 19:00

Ours usually comes down the day after Boxing Day, unfortunately this year and last we have managed to get a babysitter for the do and have gone to the pub on Boxing Day and have been too tired hungover to do it. Also, dh was working today. I want mine down now. There's not enough space

NellWilsonsWhiteHair · 28/12/2015 19:03

Can someone explain the twelfth night thing, please? In terms of dating. As I understand it, the wise men supposedly took a couple of years to arrive, so is it coincidental that this ended up being (supposedly) close to the date when Jesus was (supposedly) born, or was epiphany created close to the time in a more deliberate way of tying the whole thing together?

Notwithstanding my confusion, mine normally come down on Jan 6 - this thread has reminded me to check collection dates though so that may have to change. Went up on 23rd because DS had a Christmas party that day - otherwise it would have been Christmas Eve. Two weeks seems about the right length of time.

dementedpixie · 28/12/2015 19:04

Is there not controversy as to when 12th night is I.e. Some say the 5th and some say 6th? Do they not say the decorations have to be down by that date and not after as its bad luck?

My tree is down now, I'm not having it cluttering up the room any more

kansasmum · 28/12/2015 19:14

NY's Day usually. We don't have huge number of decorations, just a tree in lounge, lights and swags on the stairs and mantelpiece decorations plus the Christmas cards and a few other bits.
I'm not one for celebrating NY eve so not usually hungover on NY day and enjoy having a good clean & sort out.

Sgtmajormummy · 28/12/2015 20:53

The Twelfth Night is 5/6 January as far as I know, just as 25th December is the First Night of Christmas, not Christmas Eve.

WhoKn0wsWhereTheMistletoes · 28/12/2015 20:56

Usually 12th night, the house looks very bare without them.

meditrina · 28/12/2015 21:01

Most of the dates are symbolic, and might vary depending on which denomination you belong to.

Today is (for CofE) the Feast of Holy Innocents (ie remembrance of those babes slaughtered by Herod), something which wouldn't have happened before the visit of the Magi, so I think you have to allow for the odd lost year and random date.

Vistaverde · 28/12/2015 21:03

Mine came down today. My decs go up early December as i love Advent and the build up to Christmas but I like getting the house back to normal once it is over.

CocktailQueen · 28/12/2015 21:03

Mumsnet amazes me in the Xmas tree dept. people taking their trees down on Xmas day? Boxing Day? Insane!

Twelfth night here.

AJFsmummy · 28/12/2015 21:47

Sunday 3rd Jan xx

Kim82 · 28/12/2015 21:52

Mine came down today. I needed the space to store dd3's toys. It looks so much tidier now.

Clutterbugsmum · 28/12/2015 22:18

Mine will be down by Sunday, as we all back at work next week and I want all back up in the loft by then.
