was shocked to see mn tip recommending 98p foil trays to save on washing up at christmas; they dont rot these things infact they'll be around for your grandchildrens' grandchildren to enjoy ....

easy way to clean baking / roasting tins is clear out fatty grease gunk into old tin can - not down sink (stops needing plumber in few months) 1/2 fill w/ water and bit of washing up liquid and heat gently on stove til dishes are washed. its really easy to clean then, have big glass of wine ready for washer upper and pop chocolates in their mouth whilst doing dishes!
ray mears will be proud of me!

I knew someone would complain about this as soon as I read it!

I agree though, seems a shocking thing to do.

Miaou · 14/12/2006 21:41

Yes, I was a bit shocked when I saw that one!!! Very environmentally unfriendly.

suzycreamcheese · 14/12/2006 22:22

roasting tins are trusty, maybe a bit rusty, dont go down the foil tray route lord of the landfill will seize your soul...
just bumping and talking too myself as per normal

cazzybabs · 15/12/2006 13:04

shall we use paper plates and plastic cultery too?

suzycreamcheese · 15/12/2006 15:14

cazzybabs ..are you being sarky?

my point is that if there is a demand for throwaway stuff (esp. made from foil and un biodegradable materials) these products never leaves us...imo paper plates, plastic cutlery & wine glasses etc are throwaway things that shouldn't be used if you can help it ...
its hardly major sacrifice to wash up after eating in yer own house! is it?
in japan some people started taking their own chopsticks out to eat due to amount of trees used for throwaway wooden ones ...its that sort of thing.....

CliffRichardSucksEggsinHell · 15/12/2006 15:57

Can you not recycle paper plates and plastic cutlery?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2006 15:57

Out of interest, did you know that glass isn't biodegradable? (I know, glass stuff is reusable and easily recyclable but I thought it was interesting. I didn't realise it was "permanent".)

cazzybabs · 15/12/2006 16:01

I was, in a long way, agreeing with Suzy....we never use disapossible things if we can help it and especially not for Christmas. We shall be using our baking tins, denby plates, metal cutlery and glass glasses!

brookeslay · 15/12/2006 16:04

Saw this tip ( throw away containers) given out by Nigella , whose husband dislikes some of her food and has even thrown it in the bin !.

I think resuable all the way I love old tins, for baking and cooking as they have character. I buy cream and green ones off ebay.

suzycreamcheese · 15/12/2006 16:08

crazzybabs thats my girl!
er, no laughing, am genuinely off to recycle now ...
am no expert on this, imagine most paper would biodegrade but plastic er not sure..think most plastics are bi products of petro chemical industry and probably why we have so much of the stuff thrust upon us!
i just try to do things on small scale i guess, and refuse to buy overpackaged stuff, voting w/ my wallet.. i just cant bear waste..even used to switch off lights as a kid, my brother quite often tumbling down the hall stairs because of it ...which was an added bonus imo!

If you used a foil roasting tin you wouldn't be able to make gravy from scraping the bits off the bottom, adding wine and reducing it on the hob (ok, I've never done this, but my mother does )
