What do you eat Christmas Eve?

I'm looking for inspiration for a Christmas Eve meal. I've asked the family and they've not helped.

I'll be busy prepping for Christmas Day so it can't be too time consuming. Ideally fairly light and not using anything we'll eat on Christmas Day.

Happy to go for something convenient.

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon - easy and quick, or crab with bread and butter and salad.

Tidypidy · 13/12/2015 20:23

We always have ham, jps and salad followed by ds1s birthday cake.

squidzin · 13/12/2015 20:25

I bloody love scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Particularly on a good slice of white bread or a crumpet.

I always do a light dinner for Christmas Eve which has been the same for the past few years.

I make a delicious parsnip soup in the standard way, serve with salad, crusty bread and a cheese board. And a few glasses of bubbly.

I think we will go for a buffet style this year too.

Op we have not got into our xmas eve food groove! had chinese one year which was nice but didnt feel right some how....

Am gonna aim for a ham, pie, doritos/dips etc

IHeartKingThistle · 13/12/2015 21:11

We have Christmas ham, macaroni cheese, jacket potatoes and baked beans. Did it one year in desperation and now the kids demand it!

OSETmum · 13/12/2015 21:24

[waves to fellow Lancastrian shockers]

We're having a buffet but that's neither light not easy!

I'd go for the fish pie and make ahead of time.

JemimaMuddledUp · 13/12/2015 21:31

I usually do a ham with baked potatoes and red cabbage on Christmas Eve. But this year I will be working, so need something quicker to prepare. I have decided on a side of salmon with couscous and a roasted butternut squash and pomegranate salad.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 13/12/2015 21:31

I picked up some m&s party food a couple of days ago. It was 4 for 3. I got chicken bite things and chips which come in little stripey tubs (kids will love them) little cheese on toast nibbles, mini chicken kievs and sausage rolls.

I'd have picked different but ds2 only eats quite a limited amount of food so that should please both of them.

LibidinousTurkey · 14/12/2015 08:21

Normally do homemade lasagne (premade and frozen) garlic bread and salad.
We're away at my DP's this year so not too sure what will happen.

WutheringTights · 14/12/2015 09:00

We go to the church Christingle in the late afternoon, then pop into a very nice local cafe on the way home for hot chocolate, toasted sandwiches and chips.

HeyMicky · 14/12/2015 09:02

Pierrade. Usually tuna, salmon and chicken, with a salad and crusty bread. Not too filling, communal, feels festive and the kids love using the hot stone

JoandMax · 14/12/2015 09:05

Mushroom risotto and salad made by DH while I'm sorting the presents along with a bottle of fizz. We have a kind of home date night as Christmas Day is so busy and all about the kids! It started about 5 years ago and is a lovely calm way to start the chaos

jamtartandcustard · 14/12/2015 09:07

Hopefully will be having a traditional Japanese Christmas Eve dinner - kfc!

EvaJacobs1 · 14/12/2015 09:10

We let the kids chose a "meal" of sorts for Christmas Eve and they usually got for pizza, wedges, garlic bread, dips etc, and usually whip up some pea and ham soup for lunch.

SpaggyBollocks · 14/12/2015 09:17

big roast bird with haggis stuffing, roast potatoes, braised red cabbage, some greens such as purple sprouting or kale... etc etc... Grin

we do our big meal on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day we eat eggs benedict and chocolates/dates/sugar almonds.

drspouse · 14/12/2015 10:16

shockers and OSETmum here's hoping no more floods and power cuts then.

ItsaTenfromSanta · 14/12/2015 10:19

tinned salmon with salad, then it's officially christmas so the pringles/quality street get opened:)

StrapOnDodo · 14/12/2015 10:47

A big ham-it makes good leftovers for Boxing Day then it's in the turkey fricassé on the day after. Also ham stock is good for making red cabbage too.

SheSellsSanctuary · 14/12/2015 13:27

I've made a coq au vin which we will have with couscous and probably out of season green beans.

busymum17 · 14/12/2015 13:46

We usually do either home made lasagne or a few warm salads with good bread (salads include things like roast carrot and avocado or halloumi and chickpea).

Pranmasghost · 14/12/2015 13:52

We do a buffet mix of supermarket and home made food. People just help themselves, use paper plates and cups for dc and bin everything afterwards. There will be 10 of us this year 6 adults and 4 dc aged 15, 12, 9 and 6.

JuniorMint · 14/12/2015 13:56

We have macaroni cheese Smile

trashcanjunkie · 14/12/2015 15:54

We are having a Mexican feast, which consists of chilli con carni, refried beans, sour cream, guacamole, salsa, cheese, tortillas and rice. We'll probably have pastries or cereal or toast for breakfast and sarnies and soup for lunch.

JannerBird · 14/12/2015 17:10

I always cook Nigella's ham in coke on Christmas Eve. We have it warm with egg and chips on Christmas Eve and then cold with leftover turkey on Boxing Day.

ToffeePenny · 14/12/2015 17:14

Seafood platter - all pre prepared by someone else (fishmonger), only work required is opening the champagne to go with it :)
