Who buys cauliflower cheese at Xmas?

And red cabbage??

Christmas dinner is, as far as I'm concerned, turkey, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, sausages wrapped in bacon, some peas and carrots, a token sprout and lots of gravy. Maybe some gammon too. Other people may have parsnips.

I've been looking at the ready prepared stuff for Christmas and there's red cabbage and cauliflower cheese on offer. What? Why? You can't smother that in gravy and thus they are surely wrong?

This is what is so great about Christmas dinner - there are as many variations as families and everyone is sure their way is best the only way

Peas and mash? Cauliflower cheese? Shock Wrong wrong wrong.

Red cabbage on the other hand goes beautifully.
We also like carrots sprouts and roast parsnips.

noblegiraffe · 09/12/2015 15:36

I see most people have sprouts on their list but surely that's just because it's tradition? Everyone hates sprouts really.

I love sprouts and I have them for Christmas dinner despite that they are not a tradition for me (forrin)

I have mash and roast potatoes and love the overload of carbs! don't like cauliflower cheese myself but it's your dinner put what you want on it and enjoy Xmas Grin

I love sprouts! We had flower sprouts recently and enjoyed those too, even the sprout-hater at the table.

The link above is to the website of the UK plant nursery that invented flower sprouts (cross between Brussels sprouts and kale). The picture of the children looking excited and happy because they will soon be eating this new green leafy vegetable is very funny!

MIL always has cauliflower cheese on the table for any roast dinner, Christmas included. And red cabbage. And just about anything else that Marks and Spencers produce. And I love her for it.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 09/12/2015 16:12

No, sprouts are one of the few things mentioned in this thread that I really do like. It's all the spicy, sweet and cheesy things I avoid at Christmas. I think the main thing is to serve it all in dishes then no one has to have anything they don't want.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 09/12/2015 16:15

Ugh, no gravy here.

Lovely red cabbage
Cheesy leeks
Carrot and swede mash
Sprouts (for Dh)
Peas (for dd)
Roast parsnips.

I wouldn't let cauliflower in the house, never mind on the table!

SymphonyofShadows · 09/12/2015 16:16

Because we have beef I make an adult only gravy with port, red wine, and the meat juices. It's a once a year thing, luckily!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 09/12/2015 16:18

Gravy is the best bit!

SevenOfNineTrue · 09/12/2015 16:20

Never had either with Christmas dinner, don't do bread sauce either. Each to their own I guess.

Igneococcus · 09/12/2015 16:48

I have some flower sprouts at home, which I'm planning to put into some sort of stew with chorizo, butter beans, pumpkin and the shriveled up other root vegetables hiding in the fridge tonight.
I made bread sauce for the first time last Christmas and loved it. Will make it again this year.

Madbengalmum · 09/12/2015 16:53

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnip
Carrots
Red cabbage
Cabbage
Tenderstem brocolli
Cheesy leeks
Pigs in blankets
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Stuffing

Only two veg and one is peas? Ugh

Madbengalmum · 09/12/2015 16:53

Forgot bread sauce!

CremeEggThief · 09/12/2015 16:53

I always buy ready prepared red cabbage for Christmas dinner, but I don't like cauliflower or sprouts, so we don't have them.

RomComPhooey · 09/12/2015 18:51

Everyone hates sprouts really.

Not me. I love them! Recently discovered at a science fair that DH has the supertaster gene that makes sprouts taste like pure evil though, so he's off the hook now.

RomComPhooey · 09/12/2015 18:54

DH says he's got used to them, but we think its either because sprouts have been selectively cultivated to remove most of the icky chemical or because you get used to eating things that are bitter, spicy, a bit off kilter etc. he shudders when he remembers the sprouts of his childhood.

LikeASoulWithoutAMind · 10/12/2015 07:33

We love sprouts! They are really good roasted with shallots.

Alfieisnoisy · 10/12/2015 07:51

Sprouts? DS loves them, they are far and away his favourite vegetable. No idea why but I did nothing special....I am just fortunate that he likes veg.
