Who buys cauliflower cheese at Xmas?

And red cabbage??

Christmas dinner is, as far as I'm concerned, turkey, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, sausages wrapped in bacon, some peas and carrots, a token sprout and lots of gravy. Maybe some gammon too. Other people may have parsnips.

I've been looking at the ready prepared stuff for Christmas and there's red cabbage and cauliflower cheese on offer. What? Why? You can't smother that in gravy and thus they are surely wrong?

We're having both of those. Mainly because I would prefer two types of potato but DH's mum judges it unnecessary but will accept cauliflower cheese. Red cabbage is nice so we have it. Won't bother with peas this year I don't think.

JumpandScore · 06/12/2015 21:09

Christmas dinner must have cauliflower cheese, excellent with a bit of gravy, don't knock it till you've tried it.

Also mash, red cabbage, mushrooms, swede, parsnips, sprouts, carrots. Not sure about peas though, that seems wrong.

Glad no-ones mentioned Yorkshire puddings Grin

PirateSmile · 06/12/2015 21:13

We always have red cabbage with our Christmas dinner. Cauliflower cheese, as delicious as it is, has no place on a Christmas dinner.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/12/2015 21:13

Several people have mentioned Yorkshire puddings!

Mushrooms? Hmm. Swede, though - my daughter's very keen on mashed swede...

PirateSmile · 06/12/2015 21:14

Mushrooms with a Christmas dinner! No!!!!

Pipbin · 06/12/2015 21:14

Not mash. I've got potatoes thank you.
I love red cabbage. Interesting idea to do it with apple.

Stellar67 · 06/12/2015 21:15

Never heard of cauliflower cheese for Christmas dinner. Red cabbage soaked in port. Oh yes.

Peas on a Christmas dinner!!!

frikadela01 · 06/12/2015 21:20

Mash is just wrong... as are yorkshire puds. Pickled red cabbage always comes out at Xmas though. Not so fussed for cauliflower cheese

Iwasbornin1993 · 06/12/2015 21:21

I don't personally eat it, but my DM always makes cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner. Not red cabbage though - that's for on top of Scouse!

dementedma · 06/12/2015 21:22

Never knew people had cauliflower cheese with Christmas dinner until I read it on here! Definitely red cabbage, with parsnips and sprouts. ( and maybe Yorkshires)

RomComPhooey · 06/12/2015 21:23

Yes please to red cabbage, it adds some tang and colour.

And oomph to the post prandial farting, though in some households that need is adequately met by a generous serving of sprouts.

Allalonenow · 06/12/2015 21:24

Cauliflower cheese is essential if you are having roast beef (or steak) for Christmas dinner.

I wouldn't have mashed potato though, two types of potato is potato overkill for me, and peas are a bit too everyday veg.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 06/12/2015 21:26

Ive always had mash with a roast and Christmas dinner is no different (in regards to having mash)

I was watching something a while ago and they were talking about roasts to which someone said something about loving a roast and mentioning various foods that are included, one of them being mash. He got a funny look of everyone as apparently none of them had ever thought of mash with roast. Maybe its a regional thing?

RomComPhooey · 06/12/2015 21:30

MIL makes creamed parsnips to go with roast dinners, which is sort of mash but beyond delicious. Hungry just thinking about it. Smile

Nanasueathome · 06/12/2015 21:31

Always:
Red cabbage
Cauliflower cheese
Roast parsnips
Sprouts
Carrots
Leeks

firesidechat · 06/12/2015 21:33

I've fairly recently discovered cauliflower cheese with a roast dinner. In my opinion it transforms it from tasty to delicious. I can take or leave red cabbage though.

Cauliflower cheese is very easy to make ahead and freeze.

dementedma · 06/12/2015 21:33

Mash and gravy is divine!

harleen mash on a roast is delicious, especially slow roasted brisket. However at Christmas is has to be roasties done in pork dripping... double potatoes is just overkill to me.

canyou · 06/12/2015 21:34

I will start with we have 18 for dinner and try to please every one
Am also Irish
We have
Turkey, Ham and Spiced beef.
Garlic Potato, roasties and creamed potato (started as sil wanted mush for the baby)
Carrots, marrowfat peas, sprouts, cauli cheese and garden peas I hate marrowfat peas
Sausage stuffing and breadstuffing
Gravy, bread sauce ketchup
I use a steamer, pots, microwave and crocpots. I also cook so dont wash upXmas Grin

frikadela01 · 06/12/2015 21:34

Oh and I'm ftom yorkshire and as far as I'm aware mash on a roast dinner is pretty normal round here.

Pico2 · 06/12/2015 21:35

We always have both on Christmas Eve with a home cooked ham. I wouldn't buy them ready made, DH makes really good cauliflower cheese.

Christmas Day is sprouts, carrots, broccoli and mashed swede as veg.

noblegiraffe · 06/12/2015 21:37

Sainsbury's were selling microwave broccoli cheese the other day. Is that also a thing? I prefer broccoli to cauliflower.
