Make up for 14 year old dd

Dd has just started to wear a bit of make up and I thought I'd get her some this year.

I have no idea what brand or what sort of thing to get. She has one mascara and uses a bit of foundation/tinted moisturiser.

Are there any nice sets around that she might like?

bobbi brown is very natural so whilst it might be what we aspire to for our teens I think a lot of girls would regard it as a bit subtle - I know my DD age 13 wouldn't choose it.

Something that my DD loves is a Mac makeover. You have to book and cost is something like £25 ish but they spend an hour making them up, do a really amazing makeover with loads of tips and cost is redeemable against products. Last time DD had one I did buy loads more stuff but could easily have just got products to the value I had to redeem. Even if you don't want your daughter to have lots of Mac I do recommend it as an experience and justifiable as a one off Christmas treat. I promise she will look amazing if disconcertingly grown up and be absolutely thrilled.

Something to look out for as well is free samples on magazines. We just bought Glamour for £2, Tanya Burr on cover which DD approves and mini Clinique mascara attached as free gift. If you do a stocking you could collect little bits like that between now and Christmas, particularly if you think your DD might be brand savvy. There was a benefit eyelash primer on another magazine but DD rejected as her theory is to just put more coats of mascara on!

If you do go to any counters for things rather than super drug off the shelf I always say I am buying for 13 year old DD - do you have any samples she can have to go with that. For the most part it does prompt amazing generosity!

Definitely hasn't been as much as £50 for DD, but have a feeling there might be three tiers - makeup lesson, makeover and something quicker - maybe focuses on eyes or something? We go to one in Harvey Nics just in case it varies by concession. Where have you been NeedAScarf?

Smashbox and Urban Decay Naked pallets if you want them to love you forever, (and not end up with an orange face)! Grin

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 04/11/2015 20:52

Kiko is a really good brand too. Similar packaging etc to MAC but super cheap and really good quality.

I used to be a MAC addict but can no longer justify it and am super happy with all my Kiko products. The nail varnishes are particularly good for the price.

Boots 17 and Rimmel are what my teenage DD had. At the ripe old age of 24 and earning her own money I see she has graduated to MAC.....

FetaComplete · 04/11/2015 20:57

I still use Rimmel, Boots Natural Collection, Bourjois and I'm mid forties. I don't think expensive stuff is worth it. My dd 17 doesn't wear foundation and neither do I- just some concealer if needed.

NeverNic · 04/11/2015 21:15

As a main gift wouldn't it be more special to have a brand, rather than something they could buy with their pocket money? As a teen I had a lot of premium brands as that's pretty much all I asked for. I had quite a Juicy Tube collection back in the day! Bobbi Brown and Mac both do brilliant Christmas sets. Mac especially tend to have funky packaging and that's half the joy.

Benefit also do sets that might suit and less adult, though apart from a very long teen addiction to their cheek tint, none of their colours ever worked for me.

All the teens near me are desperate for the Real Techniques brushes (sold in Superdrug though online probably cheaper).

Agree that Kiko and MUA are definitely worth buying. Colours and formulations are brilliant and would make great smaller gifts and stocking fillers. Most of my makeup bag (excluding foundation and concealers) are these two brands and I don't think it's entirely necessary to spend over the odds on makeup that doesn't have to match your skintone. That said I think a brand will mean more and be extra special to your teen

Those real techniques brush kits are constantly up and down in price on Amazon. I've bought the eye starter kit and the core collection for around £10 each, though both currently showing as £15. Worth sticking in your wish list and watching. They are good brushes for the price!

WyrdByrd · 04/11/2015 23:38

The Sleek sets are great value and nice quality - ideal for those starting out. For something a bit more indulgent, another vote here for the Urban Decay Naked palettes - that's what's on my DD's wishlist this Christmas. She also likes the Real techniques brushes which she got for a very good price from a eBay retailer a couple of months back, and Rimmel lipsticks.

Might be worth checking out some Zoella and Tanya Burr vlogs on YouTube to see what they are recommending at the moment.

Dancergirl · 04/11/2015 23:38

I like the look of those Benefit sets for myself ppandj! Smile

PS - all make up is on 3 for 2 in Superdrug at the mo, with a free canvas bag. Think the offer is until 24th November iirc.

Makemineacabsauv · 05/11/2015 00:06

My dd is so into branded make up tho I have persuaded her to use some No 7! For Christmas I have got her a Bebefit stocking from boots - 4 mini products you choose in a stocking for £15. Seems like a rip off as they are so small but I am not spending £40 on a kit as she doesn't need her pores refined!! She has also got a Clinique lips and eyes set reduced to £15 at outlet store, some superdrug stuff and the fab 'flutter' advent calendar far reduced to £8 at the moment in superdrug which is full of make up! She did want a benefit or body shop advent calendar but £60 was far too much!!! £8 is fine for a young teenager!!!

WyrdByrd · 05/11/2015 00:13

It's the vloggers cab - drives me nuts but DD gets pocket money now so if she wants anything that costs more than about £8 she has to budget for it herself.

Was quite an eye opener when we went into town at the weekend as I needed to overhaul my makeup bag, and I had my 11yo giving me actually very good advice on which products to go for!

Makemineacabsauv · 05/11/2015 00:14

Wowcher has some great make up brush set deals.

Dancergirl · 05/11/2015 16:05

Thanks some good ideas, although some way beyond my budget. £50 for make up brushes?? Shock

I think what I am looking for is a nice gift set, similar to the Benefits one posted above, with some little bits and pieces to try for up to £20. Would the Superdrug do something like this?

Thanks need that's really helpful. The Sleek box looks nice. Noticed on Superdrug's website they have some Tanya Burr stuff of whom dd is a fan! Smile

MARGUERITE18 · 05/11/2015 21:47

please don't hate me but If I got teen DD Rimmel or Bourjois she would disown me ....

She likes Elf and B for lowcost makeup but for gifts etc its been Benefit, Urban Decay, Bella Pierre, Bare Minerals etc for years!

She is 18 now and onto Tarte Cosmetics, the sets are actually really nice! You can buy on QVC and the baked gelato blush is very pretty!
