Is anybody else not getting their child a 'main' present?

there's nothing specific that I want to get dd this year so I have just bought bits and pieces.. (some books, a couple of jigsaws, a game, some craft bits etc then some little stocking fillers as well) but people keep asking me what I've got her and saying "oh so what's her main present" or "so you haven't got her a main present yet" it doesn't bother me as I know she is getting stuff she'll enjoy but does everybody else in the whole world except me but a 'main' present?

we usually just buy lots of stuff for the dses. ( mainly Lego this year it would seem)

oliveoil · 06/12/2006 14:54

my girls have got the ELC kitchen to share as a main present but that was only because dh is as soft as shite and wanted to get it for them

normally we do as you have and get bits

how old is she?

KTreePee · 06/12/2006 14:56

No lots of bits and pieces here too (so probably will spend more than if I'd just got one big present for each of them!)

MascaraOHara · 06/12/2006 15:02

She's 4, she wants everything but isn't realy into anything iykwim.

dd1 is getting a bike as her old one (which dd2 will inherit) is too small for her. but other than that, just small presents.

Rantaclaus · 06/12/2006 15:07

I am getting DS a "main" present or as I like to call it a "big" present (certainly cost more than many smaller things, but he is only getting socks, chocolate, a book and an orange in his santa stocking), but I see nothing wrong with lots of smaller presents if there is really not one particular item that your DD wants/needs.

ratclare · 06/12/2006 15:21

oh thank god it isnt just me then, mines 4 too and really doesnt want anything but wants everything so ive just got her bits ,nothing over £20 ,most under a fiver and im sure she will be deliriousley happy!

MascaraOHara · 06/12/2006 15:42

We are at one then ratclare, maybe it's the age.

2yo just getting bits and pieces. 5yo getting a fairly cheap digital camera as a main present. not sure about 6yo though, she doesn't need anything much but am concerned she might be getting to an age when they expect a main present. will probably buy her something tacky but big in the end just in case she feels short-changed otherwise.

Brandybuttershott · 06/12/2006 15:56

My DD's nearly 4, and very similar. I guess you could say her 'main' present is a doctors set from ELC as it probably cost the most (£15), but then I've got her books, a couple of games, collage/craft stuff etc. Other people will get her enough big stuff that I have to find house-room for!

(Mind you it's her birthday in Jan and we've got her a pink sing-along CD player - somehow birthdays tend to veer me more towards 1 thing rather than bits and pieces!)

turquoise · 06/12/2006 15:57

Mine are a fair bit older and not having main presents either, partly because they have birthdays in jAN and feb, and partly because they don't want anything 'big' (except ds who wants a laptop - dream on sonny). So they're getting books, stocking stuff and a couple of cds/dvds.
They get stuff from other people and feel overloaded anyway, I'm glad to be making it all a bit less excessive this year.

This reminds me of a had the other day..

dd sort of needs a new toothbrush so I picked one up in Tesco the other day.. When I got home to unpack, I put it with her christmas stuff.. dp asked what I was doing, i shrugged and replied "stocking filler" he looked completely baffled and told me I couldn't give her a tooth brush for Christmas. My answer

"Course I can, she'll love it, santa bought it"

he just stood in the middle of the room looking bemused for a while.

DD needs new pants, and I'm just wondering if putting them in her stocking is too stingy?!? It'll be a Woolworths multipack rather than anything with Disney characters on!

Blu · 06/12/2006 16:10

DS, 5, is so peculiar about what he wants, so he's just getting a collection of small-ish things. The biggest is a table football game I bought at a 2nd hand sale for £15.

When my SIL asked him what he wanted, he said 'a whoopee cusion and some lip salve'. She said he was a 'weirdo' and I bristled!

LunarSeasonsGreetings · 06/12/2006 16:22

I think the most expensive thing ds is getting was £10. It is physically quite big though, so it will give the impression of being a big present, even it wasn't that extravagant. Otherwise he's got one other (also physically quite big) thing which was about £8 and a selection of smaller things which vary from about 50p to £5.

maycontainstress · 06/12/2006 16:25

My DTS have just had a birthday. They don't have the need for a main present because they already have a PS2, a scooter, etc. No sense in buying it all again for a newer model when it is still in use.

I've bought loads of games and cheap, crafty things like shaker maker things and magic tricks.

This is the first year I've not done a 'big' present though, must admit feels strange.

Mercy · 06/12/2006 16:35

My two a few bits and pieces as well, nothing above £10 or so usually. They are also getting a joint present this year, a table football game like Blu's ds! (pmsl at the whoopee cushion and lip salve).

I honestly can't remember if we do the stocking thing tbh .

Brandybuttershott - if your dd is anything like mine, she'll be thrilled to get some new pants!

poinsettydog · 06/12/2006 16:43

Depends what you mean by main - do you think they mean most expensive by far?

Peridot30 · 06/12/2006 16:47

Mascara i always get mine a toothbrush in their stockings. I got one when i was little so just carried it on.

janeite · 06/12/2006 18:29

Lol at whoopie cushion and lip salve!!! My two aren't getting main presents and will also be getting toothbrushes, toothpaste AND lip salve in their stockings!!!!

JoshandJamie · 06/12/2006 19:13

Nope - my son is getting two engines (percy and gordon) and a Buzz Lightyear doll and a Woody doll. That's it. And that's all he's been asking for since July

dmo · 06/12/2006 19:43

the main present doesnt have to be expensive it just has to be an item that the child jusr repets they want

MascaraOHara · 06/12/2006 19:45

I thought the toothbrush idea was nice and she loves cleaning her teeth
