6 does seem a bit young

whatwouldjesusdo · 05/12/2006 17:32

no
but if there was a childrens one, its just another way to play music or stories after all.

paulaplumpbottom · 05/12/2006 17:40

I've seen those somewhere

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 18:09

whats so wrong with a 6 yr old having one, I had a tape player from fisher price at about that age, it's just that nowadays there is an easier format for music thats all. After all she can't lose or break tapes with an mp3 player.

you don't know why she would want one?? so she can listen to stories and musci more often than when mummy lets her take over the dvd player in the front room. seems harmless fun to me, am I missing something?

if she would like one and would use it, buy her one. My ds1 is 7.5 and has recently stated to get into music - he plays a lot of tunes on his computer - dh has set it up with speakers.

foxinsocks · 05/12/2006 18:14

only negative thing I can think of is the headphones (wrt to their hearing)

I wouldn't want dd (6) having something with headphones but she does have problem ears

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 18:15

it's THE thing that she has asked for
she actually asked for a way to listen to music that noone else can hear and walk around with it
I explained that was a walkman and it had headphones and it became her no.1 thing
then my mate said why don't you just get an mp3 player and I at first said no way she'll break it and then we found the fisher price one and now dh isn't so sure we need to get such a kiddie one as at this age she may be able to lookk after with a little help from us

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 18:17

My ds aged 5 is getting one. It cost tuppence from Tesco and I have put his fave music and lots of Horrid Henry stories on it. The sound quality is excellent. At the moment he has a tape walkman and his sister has a cd walkman. The mp3 player was cheap and is very easy to use. Dd is getting the same mp3 player but with a bigger memory. We are travelling for a month so they will really use them and it saves them fighting over my ipod.
I would get him a cheap one and explian how to use it and I think he will be sensible. I wouldn't bother with anything from Fisher Price.

iota · 05/12/2006 18:22

there's been some stuff recently about possible hearing damage

bbc report

robinpud · 05/12/2006 18:25

Hmm.. so loud music damages your hearing ?! Time for some common sense. My ds has very sensitive ears and hates discos etc so already chooses his own volume level and knows not to have it up loud.

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 18:49

oh right the loud music thing, ok well I would expect her to be sensible and I will help her with that.

My DSage 6 is having a CD walkman for Xmas , really cheap from Tesco , mainly to listen to stories.

Dont really think a MP3 player is a problem , a step up from a CD walkman , which is a step up from a tape walkman.

So I dont think your DD is too young, technology has moved on .

yellowvan · 05/12/2006 18:58

DS is 5 and loves his.Has lots of music on it as well as CD books. Uses it mainly travelling on train or in car He calls it his M-Pea fritter

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 18:58

the only thing I am a little concerned about is whether she will be able to use the earphones that go in your ears. the fisher price one has proper headphones but I can't seem to find any 'real' ones that do.

DD is 5 and i'm considering getting her one because she keeps stealing my ipod! I don't think it's too young to have one at all.

TinsellyRhino · 05/12/2006 19:16

so do all your kids have earphones(that go in the ears) as opposed to headphones that sit over their head and against their ears ?

OP posts:
TillyRose · 05/12/2006 19:18

My sd is 5 and has one. he does find the earphones difficult so I bought him over the head ones. He has loads of stories on his and uses it for long car journies to Cornwall .

TillyRose · 05/12/2006 19:18

I mean ds!

serenitynightholynight · 05/12/2006 19:27

The Fisher Price one "comes with tiny volume-restricted headphones, while an iTunes-style online store will sell parentally approved songs for the player.", or so I've read
