You can choose only one Christmas dinner item

You're going to someones house for a relatively standard Christmas roast dinner.

What one thing would you want to insist on having to make it a proper Christmas dinner?

Cranberry sauce? Brussel sprouts? Christmas pudding for dessert?

For me it is bacon wrapped cocktail sausages. I get a little bit itchy thinking "what if" they weren't there Hmm

I was also going to say pigs in blankets.

But then I remembered just how much I fucking love roast potatoes. Glorious little bastards.

flightywoman · 19/10/2015 18:01

Tough call between my mum's sausage-meat stuffing or her bread sauce...both are what make Christmas special for me.

What a good question!

ChristmasZombie · 19/10/2015 18:02

Another vote for pigs in blankets! I love pretty much all of it, but the little piggies seem to make a roast dinner into CHRISTMAS DINNER!!!

NarcyCow · 19/10/2015 18:05

I've never had a pig in a blanket. What are they exactly?

QforCucumber · 19/10/2015 18:06

glo I have to buy mint sauce specifically for dp to have with his turkey! God knows why, even his mum can't understand it?!

WheresMyBurrito · 19/10/2015 18:07

Narcy at their most basic level, they're just a sausage wrapped in bacon.

But holy fuck they are DELICIOUS.

howtorebuild · 19/10/2015 18:07

Sausage wrapped in bacon.

Thankfulforeveryday · 19/10/2015 18:07

Roasties everyday of the week

petitdonkey · 19/10/2015 18:10

The first time I had Christmas lunch anywhere but my Mum's it was at my MIL's after we got married. There was no bread sauce or pigs in blankets. I cried. (quietly and in private Grin )

NarcyCow · 19/10/2015 18:34

Ooh. Pig wrapped in pig. I can see how that would work and must now add them to the Christmas menu here for all eternity.

There's no narrowing it down to one item though. It's all interdependent; turkey wouldn't be right without gravy and gingerbread stuffing and chestnut and herb stuffing and bread and walnut sauce and roast cranberry and clementine relish, ham needs something creamy to balance the salt (sprout and bacon gratin here this year), everything needs roasties (light and fluffy within, crisp and crunchy without). And spouts and carrots need to be on there too as a token nod to healthiness.

Cripes, I'm hungry.

PreciousxBane · 19/10/2015 18:36

Pigs in blankets, I eat mainly these on Christams day with just a little bit of everything else.

olbas · 19/10/2015 18:39

Kilted sausages in a heartbeat.

SaltySeaBird · 19/10/2015 18:39

My sisters trifle and my Mum's bread sauce!

SaveOurBogBrushes · 19/10/2015 18:40

Proper gravy.

NeverNic · 19/10/2015 18:41

Roast parsnips. End of discussion.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2015 18:43

Roast potatoes! Obviously Confused

Orangesox · 19/10/2015 18:44

Pigs in blankets. Without any hesitation.

Ideally they need to be made with the saltiest streaky bacon available, wrapped around chipolatas in a substantial casing that pops when you bite into it. Baked in the oven till crispy beyond belief Grin

ShowOfHands · 19/10/2015 18:45

I don't understand the question. I mean the words are all in English but it makes bugger all sense. One thing? Just one thing?

Are you this cruel at all times or is it just Christmas?

GloGirl · 19/10/2015 18:59

I am generally a cruel person Show , I kick pigeons and eat chocolate buttons in front of my toddler without sharing Grin

But I am shuddering at rosie's friend who doesn't serve roast potatoes. I mean - WHAT THE FUCK?

If you don't pick you have to eat only what's given to you, like mashed potatoes and no roast potatoes.

Homemade bread sauce. Mmmm.

MTWTFSS · 19/10/2015 19:13

Home-made chestnut stuffing!

mamapants · 19/10/2015 19:16

I don't like pigs in blankets...so we don't have them.Shock
I do chipolatas.
The bacon stops the sausages from going crispy and it all has a disgusting texture.

My item would be sausagemeat stuffing I think.

jorahmormont · 19/10/2015 19:22

Roast potatoes.

To have Christmas dinner without roast potatoes would be sacrilege.

Trills · 19/10/2015 19:26

I really like bread sauce out of a packet.

ClashCityRocker · 19/10/2015 19:27

Hmm...I'd go for cranberry sauce i think. But nice homemade cranberry sauce not that jelly in a jar shit.

Disappointingly, DHs family don't do bread sauce. I am debating taking so,e with me not really
