What goes in the ideal stocking?

Help me out here please....

Dh took dd to his work's Christmas party today and so I took the 3 dss shopping. The oldest 2 know the truth about the old man with the red coat and white beard so I thought they could choose stocking fillers for their sister. But we came away with absolutely nothing.

The fundamental trouble is, when I was a child, my parents lavished us with hundreds of silly little toys, knick knacks and trinkets and so I have a tendency to think I should buy that stuff for my children. But dh had a different upbringing and gets really grumpy when I try to buy silly things. I am not sure actually what he thinks should go in the stocking. I do also like to get in some useful things eg last year I did gloves and hats for everyone who needed them, and I always do paper and pens (but the oldest 2 dss never used their pens last year!)

So, come on please. Help a disillusioned Mner. What should I get for the stockings? What is your definitive list of must have items?

Oh sorry, I did not mean you were spoiling your dd, Baileys. I meant it was a long list as in, very organised of you to have all that, and nice of you to write it all down to give others ideas.

Counting your list, there are 33 items mentioned and I know I gave my 4 children each about 20 items last year (spent hours trying to make sure they had an equivalent amount so I remember how many items there were!) So, if you take into account I bought my children about 80 things, your list of 33 is quite abstemious!

DH thinks it is hilarious when I line everything all up to make sure it is even for the two of them.

My ds is 4, he has:

Super man gel pens
Super man note book
Top trumps
Choc Coins
Tooth brush
Umbrella

That's an excellent selection, northerner..a nice, practical yorkshire selection. Choccys and toothbrush, umbrella, pens and note pad. Love it!

DG - dont worry did;nt think you were criticsing - but have been lurking on other threads where what I have bought would been seen as excessive.

Next year as I will have 2DC's i am going to get a little bag for each and fill equally as I go along.

80 - wow - do you wrap them all?

trixymalixy · 04/12/2006 14:09

I have always wanted to do stockings at Xmas but my DH would never let me as he said we were too old for stockings .

This thread has just got me ridiculously excited about doing a stocking next year for DC1 (due 21st Jan)!!!

dh and I do stockings for each other but set a limint on price......his go in a lovely homemade stocking (I by me!) and mine go in a tescos bag......I might have to buy myself a nice stocking as he will never get around to it!

No I don't wrap the stocking gifts. I did wrap some of the larger ones one year (when there were only 3 children I believe) with the aim of slowing them down a bit in the morning, but it didn't seem to slow them down at all. Actually, all it meant was that I had bits of wrapping paper everywhere which had to be picked up!

DH and I had stockings before we had children. They are matching and read 'I still belive in Santa' in gold thread

DD has a handmade one from a craft fair with her name embroidered on it. And DC2 (if s/he arrives in time for Santa) will get the first stocking my DM bought for DH when we met, and next year will get a more personal one. Well s/he only has a bib, ball and teether to go in this year.

I would love to get DH some bits for his, but he has said I would get told off as we have prmoised until we are both back at work, after my mat leave we will do our normal Chrsitmas treat of a drink together and a nice film - aww!

Well santa has done some shopping and DS 9yrs is getting so far...
Santa chocs- Poundland
Beano egg thing- Stationery Box
Foil art- Stationery Box
Simpsons erasers- Stationery Box
Maze things- BHS
Scrap book- Poundland
Survial and Worst Case books- second hand
Starwars Ep1 book - second hand

Still got things to get as DD has a bit more, she is 7 and into pink so her stocking stuff is more obvious.
