What goes in the ideal stocking?

Help me out here please....

Dh took dd to his work's Christmas party today and so I took the 3 dss shopping. The oldest 2 know the truth about the old man with the red coat and white beard so I thought they could choose stocking fillers for their sister. But we came away with absolutely nothing.

The fundamental trouble is, when I was a child, my parents lavished us with hundreds of silly little toys, knick knacks and trinkets and so I have a tendency to think I should buy that stuff for my children. But dh had a different upbringing and gets really grumpy when I try to buy silly things. I am not sure actually what he thinks should go in the stocking. I do also like to get in some useful things eg last year I did gloves and hats for everyone who needed them, and I always do paper and pens (but the oldest 2 dss never used their pens last year!)

So, come on please. Help a disillusioned Mner. What should I get for the stockings? What is your definitive list of must have items?

blimey all these stockings must be huuuuuge. i can only fit a few bits in my kids ones

Skribble · 02/12/2006 21:42

Calculator- good idea. My two keep nicking mine even if it is to turn it upside down and get it to show hello.

I have similar problems with torches. I got a cheap wind up one for DS to take to camps, it has suvivied 2 camps so far and If he falls asleep with it on at least he doesn't run down loads of batteries.

DS also loked the Bikini Babes calender he got from DH's collegue last year, she thought it was so funny, DD got a fireman one, she put blue tack on their nipples and we skipped some months if we didn't like them .

DumbledoresGirl · 02/12/2006 21:42

Oh God Gillian so there was! nad the title even asks for the same thing I asked for - a definitive list of stocking fillers

I did look through the Christmas section before starting this thread, believe me, but I didn't see this. Thanks. I will have a read and see if I get inspired.

Hi Lulumama - yes I have been taking a break but I am drawn right back when I want some help!

Right, I have read that other thread and written down some ideas. I have come to the conclusion I have been in this game too long as most things mentioned have been bought several times over by me over the years.

Still, I like the idea of chocolate oranges instead of real ones, a keyring for ds1 who will be going to secondary school next year and maybe should have his own house key, disposable cameras (although dd got one today at the Xmas party) and Mr Men bubble bath for my youngest.

Also I was reminded to buy them all combs (we have terrible trouble finding combs in the morning!) and I even came up with an idea of my own for the older boys: a book of Sodoku puzzles.

So I am feeling a bit more positive now. Would still like to know what other 9/10 year old boys are getting though.

he he singledad. wont nick your chocs- have loads of my own, and not really into trains lol xxx

BettySpaghetti · 02/12/2006 22:25

xmasmummy -you mentioned Rubiks Cubes earlier but weren't sure if you can still buy them -Amazon have them for £8.99 I think

xmasmummy · 02/12/2006 22:27

thanx bettyspaghetti, was suggesting it to someone, i had one as a child, unfortunately if i bought ones for my ds's they would pull it apart and do it that way- totally cheating

singledadofthree · 02/12/2006 22:35

oh wow! used to have one of them and always had to take it apart. am much better with chocs, altho dont seem to get that many

santasaltire · 02/12/2006 22:37

DG, you were saying about shower gel, i bought some football shaped ones from superdrug, they were only a pound each, i got three for Ds1, as he's footi mad!

BettySpaghetti · 02/12/2006 22:38

I seem to recall that the imitation/copies used to come apart really easily but the genuine Rubiks Cube didn't - we had a copy that, by the time we'd cheated endless times, fell apart if you so much as looked at it

xmasmummy · 02/12/2006 22:47

oh singledad come round iwll get you a rubiks cube and some choccies ok ???

paulaplumpbottom · 02/12/2006 23:21

small toys and enough candy to gorge on all day.

Smithagain · 03/12/2006 09:18

Fair comment, DumbledoresGirl. I should count myself lucky to be buying for an innocent 4yo, who will be ecstatic with her pink torch!!

mrsnoah · 03/12/2006 09:23

A mandarin orange
a gold shiny new £1 coin (must be shiny tho)
a walnut
a mini torch
bag of chocolate money
fart cushion/worms in gel pot etc
jokey things
wind up toy
knickers

same as everyone else looking at it now!

hana · 03/12/2006 11:26

dumbledoresgirl - what about a magazine? or cd? ( hmm would they fit in the stocking??!) 20Q is little hand held toy thT I'VE just bought for a 10 year old boy ( about £8 from amazon) that is pretty cool. maybe some microwave popcorn bags

I don;t have boys so am short on ideas, but lots of things to get a little girl - I go for practical and fun things
undies/vests/tightss/socks
hairclips/copmb./brush
little cereal boxes
choc coins
christmas decoration for tree
toothbrush/toothpaste
artsy crafty stuff
bath crayons

cant think what else I've got ( but not all that stuff!)
hope yo get some ideas for your children!

santasaltire · 03/12/2006 13:01

hana, we have just bought the 20Q game for DS1 and for our godson, and i've had to hide them somewhere else, as DH and i keep playing with them. they are great.
I have also got DS2 a Yoda poster from Play.com for £4.99 for his stocking, and got DS1 a Pirates of the Carribean one, and then got a third one free. Free postage as well

SantaGotStuckUpTheGreensleeve · 03/12/2006 13:03

Essentials: tangerine in toe, followed by apple; chocolate Santa; chocolate coins; other loose sweets eg humbugs, treacle toffees

Then: one wrapped "nice" present, various little nick-nacks and at least one bizarre/comedy item.

DumbledoresGirl · 03/12/2006 13:18

I know the 20Q game from last year ( I told you, I have been there and done it with presents!!) We got it for ds2 on his birthday (just before Christmas) and I do have to agree it is absolutely brilliant. We were all playing with it obsessively last year for the 4 days between ds2's birthday and Christmas, and we still play it occasionally now, a year later (in fact I se it on the computer table in front of me!) I have also bought it sometimes as a gift when ds2 has been to a party as I think it is something that appeals to many.

Re football shaped shower gel, unfortunately, my boys don't like football but I am thinking there might be Simpsons shaped shower gels somewhere - they love the Simpsons - anyone know where I could get that?

I am also considering the packet of microwave popcorn as they like popcorn - it is just a novelty thing really isn't it?
