Christmas dinners - anyone not having turkey???

I'm interested because I think we've (finally, after much hooing and hahing) decided to have a roast duck instead (with a nice zesty fruity stuffing like cranberry or suchlike).

We have roast chickens every couple of weeks so a turkey just doesn't seem special enough.

We were going to roast a goose until we found out how much they are (£60 - £70 on Ocado -eeek!)

So is anyone else doing anything different? My bro is vegan so my parents are all having a vegan Christmas dinner. I'm sure it will be delish as he's a great cook.

We never have turkey. Firstly there are only 3 of us for Christmas dinner so a roast would be too big. I don't eat meat at all, and turkey is DH's least favourite meat.

DH and DD will probably have fillet steak. I will probably have fish.

We always had turkey in Christmas, until my mother and aunts decided that of all the things they cooked in Christmas, turkey was the only one that was always left "intact" at the end of the party.

I think turkey is like brussels sprouts, you eat it becuase is Christmas and it's the thing to do, but there are always far more interesting things on the table.

Saturn74 · 02/12/2006 09:15

My Mum does the Christmas Dinner.
It's beef and ham for everyone else, and she does a stuffed turkey crown too, because she knows DS1 and I love it! She's fab!

MerryBiglipsmas · 02/12/2006 09:17

us...as Dp hate Turkey as its too dry for him - i love it. We usually have Goose - so bloody gorgeous the way Dp make and cooks it but this year decide to have summat different....beef and ham or duck!

We got our BIG goose from the local butcher and is £30.00

texasrose · 02/12/2006 09:21

This is the first year that I will be cooking Christmas dinner

I'm really excited about all that wonderful christmas food (and about cooking exactly what we want!)

My dd has is allergic to wheat, eggs, soya and nuts so it's much easier for me to cook rather than someone who's not used to catering for thatkind of thing.

We're having chicken. It was much cheaper than turkey and a lot less waste. There's only 2 of us will eat it. I wanted a ham but DH wasn't fussed.

Tommy · 02/12/2006 09:41

I hope MIL will be cooking something veggie for Dh and me! She nromally gets something from M&S which suits us fine.

BTW, Nigella Lawson said last night on J Ross show that not having turkey is a bit pretentious or something.....

HoraceWimp · 02/12/2006 09:43

we never have turkey

texasrose · 02/12/2006 09:49

We will be having rib of beef. Yummmmmmmmm

SpookyMadMerryChristmasMummy · 02/12/2006 09:57

we will be having a leg of lamb!

colditz · 02/12/2006 10:03

We are having Leg of lamb with delicious trimmings, and some partyish food to go with it.

wanderingstar · 02/12/2006 10:23

Roast rib of beef here, with Yorkshire puds, hot horseradish sauce and thyme roasted carrots/parsnips. This is the first time we've persuaded the children it's not necessary to eat something with feathers and wings on Christmas day !
Don't really like turkey, love duck and goose though ! Texasrose, one of the Jamie Oliver books has a lovely tangy rhubarb/ginger stuffing for duck. I did it a couple of years ago and it was delicious. Can track it down if you want.

noddyholder · 02/12/2006 10:25

Jonathan Ross and Nigella said last night that anyone not having turkey was a w*er esp those having goose!

ComeOyefaithfulVeneer · 02/12/2006 10:26

We always have goose and ham as none of us particularly like turkey.

UCM · 02/12/2006 10:45

I have forced DH to have turkey for years cos' I just didn't feel right about not having one. Now I have rid myself of the guilt as we didn't have one last year and it was fine, the house didn't blow up or anything. So I can do it this year

Journey2 · 02/12/2006 10:52

We are having pork!
This tradition was set off from being out of the country for several years.. and Christmas when you are used to a British way is very hard to recreate when abroad!
So, we love pork and that's what we had last year and now this year too.
It's an improvement on 2 yrs ago where it was KFC!!
Naturally this has confused the real abide by tradition family members, but no one is visiting us, so no one can complain!

ludaloo · 02/12/2006 10:53

we have a chicken, noone likes turkey...
we have a ham joint on boxing day (yum)

JinglePrunes · 02/12/2006 11:14

We are being pretentious and having a bit of beef, hung by the butcher for 30 days a la Fearnley-Whittingstall (this is all FIL's doing btw).
We will be cooking a ham for christmas eve.
Turkey smells rank imo so Nigella can sod off with her pretentious comment

realjolly · 02/12/2006 11:41

Well, it just isn't worth it for us, to do a Turkey, and as it's easier for us to do X-mas dinner here, rather then joining the iNlaws for Dinner...we will have something otehr then Turkey....last year we had roast Ham with a Honey and Orange Glaze....yum....this year I might do some Porkfilet or I might buy some Turkeybreastjoint, and do that...sort of sticking with the traditional theme, if we would do that!

donnie · 02/12/2006 12:20

we are doing beef as well, have never cooked it before in my life so I am nervous about it! I just can't face another year of picking cold meat off bones and such like.

yulemoonfiend · 02/12/2006 12:25

duck for us

xmasmummy · 02/12/2006 12:35

for all those complaining about turkey being too dry. there is a way to cook it and keep it moist. cook the turkey upside down under foil and the juices will all run throught the breast and keep it from drying out. then the last half hour turn it right way up and remove foil to brown off the skin. xxx

tallulah · 02/12/2006 13:07

We never have turkey because we are all vegetarian. We normally have something nice from M&S.
